Walliered
I took DaVid to Charleston today and he has TPL in his right rear knee. The surgeon there said she had never seen it in a Greyhound before. She is on loan from a University and she is very familiar with the problem in German Sheps., Boxers and some other breed, but not Greyhounds. Could some please give me the information for Dr. Couto? I want to get him on board. Thanks again.

hikinghounds
I think TPL is very rare in Greyhounds. I've never heard of it in one. I do know that a strained Iliopsoas muscle is often misdiagnosed as TPL, knee injury. Iliopsoas strain can happen if they have run or played hard with fast tight turns or fallen or slipped and a rear leg slid out to the side. It can take weeks or months to heal often reoccurs. I speak from experience as Zephyr has this. Don't know if that's what's happened with DaVid, but thought I would mention it.
racindog
yes for heavens sakes get another opinion. Greyts RARELY have that. In fact when I took Slim to the er vet, said vet, Dr. Linendoll, barely gave him any exam at all and quickly diagnosed that and refered me to an ortho specialist. I knew something was wrong- and guess what- I found out from a second vet I took him to that his leg was actually BROKEN. The 2nd vet immediately assessed that there was nothing wrong with his knees and it took him only minutes to correctly diagnose the fracture. Walliered
A new specialist is coming to Charleston Referral Vet Hospital in about 2 weeks. She is relocating from OSU!!!!!!!!! She has also said she has never seen a TPL in a greyhound. So, we are waiting on her to come on board. They said his speen is very large and they are testing it. He has had a bout a million texts since yesterday. Major cancer tests, but so far no cancer.

Walliered
Ok, everyone, we are home. I found out the new doctor's name is Dr. Au from OSU. Does anyone know her? We are scheduled to go back to Charleston on May 22 and this Dr. Au will put a camera in DaVid's knee and see what she can see. She also told Dr. Wood that she had never known of a Greyhound with TPLO. In a couple of days the spleen test will be back. But, they found no cancer in him and believe me they checked everything because they were sure he had it. I got out of there for $2800.00. Thanks
JJNg
Just a quick clarification. I believe the problem you're referring to is cranial cruciate ligament disease or rupture. The cranial cruciate ligament in a dog is the equivalent to the ACL (anterior cruciate ligament) in a human, which we often hear about athletes tearing. TPLO (tibial plateau leveling osteotomy) is the name of one of several surgical procedures that can be done to treat this problem in dogs. Regardless, I agree that this is a rare condition in greyhounds, and I'm glad you're getting a 2nd opinion. Walliered
Thanks, they were so sure it was bone cancer and did many tests to confirm that. So this new doctor from OSU will be moving to Charleston and we are scheduled to see her. Her name is Jennifer Au and according to the OSU website she is very well established. It just scares me when they said "we have never seen this in a Greyhound". They thought this was brought on by the pred he had been on. Problem is DaVid has never taken Pred in his life, so that through a wrench in things.
krissn333
Greyhounds have large spleens too. I left a veterinary practice because they insisted Ace's spleen was large and needed to be removed. It was the same size as it had been several years before when she'd had studies done. They wouldn't even look at her old studies. Turns out she has chronic lymphocytic leukemia. I'm so glad I took her elsewhere for a second opinion.
