Toenail Trauma

Recommended Posts

While racing around the yard at dark-thirty this morning, Wendy almost entirely tore off a toenail. There is very little bleeding and she does not seem distressed. The nail is barely hanging on, is twisted to one side and I think it's the quick I can see.

DH is on vacation so he is taking her to the vet. Please share any information that you have on this type of injury so I have an idea what to expect.

This just happened to Gigi a week ago today except her entire nail came off. She had a lot of bleeding, but we put some quick stop on it and cleaned it out and bandaged it up. I called the vet and she told us to keep it wrapped up for at least 48 hours and to watch it for signs of infection. She left the bandage on until Monday and then decided to chew it off. I have been keeping an eye on it and it doesn't seem to be bothering her.

I'd say depending on how old Wendy is if she will let you clean it out, you'll probably be able to avoid going to the vet. The vet also told us since it tore completely out that there is a chance it will never grow back.

Yikes! It might not grow back! Wendy turns 7 in Decmber. My concern is that the nail is still attached. I'm afraid of trying to remove it myself.

I would go to the vet then for sure. Part of why she told us to just keep it wrapped is because I could see it was ripped cleanly out and because Gigi is only almost 3 years old and healthy.

Manley did the same thing to his dewclaw. It was just about all the way ripped off and sticking out sideways. I kept it really clean and I covered it with vet wrap when he'd be out running around (so it didn't rip further, as the quick was still attached).

He didn't pick at it so I left it uncovered when he was sleeping/relaxing. A few weeks later, as the nail grew out, the big dead part fell off on a walk and now he has a teeny nail there :)

The vet will trim the rest and then wrap the foot until it heals. Expect some pathetic limping, but she'll be fine. :)

Any chance she has SLO?

Oh, God...I hope not. :hope What are the symptoms?

Did a quick Google...nope...thinking it's not SLO. I think she just did some extreme butt-tuck zoomies in the dark early this morning and got banged up. DH says she's been fine all day. No obvious discomfort, no bleeding, just that nail at a weird angle. We're going to the vet as soon as I get home so he can snip it off and wrap it up. I'm guessing that's all she'll need.

Same thing happened to our Mary this past winter. She did it at the dog park just goofing around. I noticed small spots of blood in the snow, but by the time I got her to the truck, the cold has pretty much stopped the bleeding. I went right to the vet and they packed some powder in the open hole. A few anticeptic paw soaks and she was good to go. The vet said the nail may not grow back, but it has. However, it isn't growing back in the same direction. She now has an outer right toenail that points 90 degrees right. Doesn't seem to bother her and it doesn't seem to grow as fast as the other nails. Just watch for a secondary infection and keep it clean. She should be good to go.

Milky Way lost a toenail about 2 years ago. Isn't it amazing how much a toenail bleeds. I took him in to the vets and they removed the part of the toenail that was hanging on, cleaned it up, and wrapped his foot. His foot was sore for a few days so he had a few pain meds. The toenail did grow back very slowly and crazy crooked.

This was our experience exactly.

We went to the vet for a follow up. She's fine; was more perturbed by the bandages than the actual toenail trauma, the goof. It looks okay. The quick is quite visible, which makes me shiver but doesn't seem to bother Wendy. The vet told me what you all have; it might grow back wonky or not at all. Just to be extra careful with that toe from now on especially during nail clipping. Never a dull moment!
