Question About Stopping Tylan Powder

Recommended Posts

I just got off the phone with Elanco and their vet can not answer this question because he said that the product is not marketed for dogs.

For any of you who have used the Tylan and then stopped, did you wean your dog off or just stop using?

We just stopped, but Spencer's poop is better with it, so we started again. And with it he doesn't need to go back on metronidazole very often.

What are you using it for, and what does your vet say? Or did you get it elsewhere?

Got it elsewhere, and am using it for Lenny's Colitis. He's finally doing well with his new food and a probiotic twice a day along with the Tylan, but I'm not totally comfortable keeping him on Tylan long term so I wanted to see how he does off it but wasn't sure of the best way to do that.

Flagyl helped but after a week off it, his stools were soft again

Tylan is an antibiotic so there shouldn't necessarily be any issues with stopping suddenly (drug withdrawal-type issues).

Not saying what you should do or think about tylosin. But fwiw, Spencer has been on it for three years for his IBD. It seems very mild and it was the last piece of the puzzle when it came to getting his poop in a group. But compared to Flagyl and budesonide, and the antibiotics he was on for SIBO, tylosin is a very mild thing. So if you do have to put him back on it long term, I don't think you need to worry much about side effects. Of course, it's so darned bitter that we put it in capsules before administering it!

Thank you. I'm putting it in gel caps as well because nothing was hiding that taste

It occurs to me to mention that Spencer was only on 1/8 tsp/day when we experimented with stopping it. So I don't know how that compares to what Lenny's taking. If it's substantially more, you could always taper him off over the course of a week or two.

He's on 1/8tsp twice a day which is what the e-vet suggested on one of our trips there

That's what Spencer's been on most of his time on it, though for the first year it was 1/4 tsp twice a day. It should be fine for you to just stop. Scritches to handsome Lenny!

My vet wanted me to put Sam on tylan as a long-term solution to several problems, so I also think it's safe over the long haul.

The problem here was that tylan has never helped Sam--even a little bit. So although there are risks with long-term metronidazole (risks that don't occur with tylan), we're having to go the metronidazole-route, although we have Sam down to one half pill every other day.

We've used Tylan long-term and stopped it cold turkey without any problem.

Yup. You can stop cold turkey. Especially at that dosage.

I only wean off if I'm using higher amounts and/or more times/day, and then only because I want to make sure the underlying problem is gone so I don't have to scrape up the poop.

You can start up again w/o issue as well.
