Clotting Issue

Recommended Posts

Molly was scheduled for her spay last week, but the vet did not feel comfortable proceeding. She did a clotting test beforehand, and rather than the "less than a minute" it was supposed to take for her to clot, it took over 90 seconds. She repeated the test and got the same results. She said her PT time was 2x the normal. She sent out for a Von Willebrand's screen, but it came back negative.

Anyone have any suggestions on what else to test for? The vet left a message about the negative VW screen as she was not officially in the office today but wanted us to have the results right away, so we expect to speak with her tomorrow evening about what's next.

Have your vet contact Dr Couto at OSU. He is a hematologist and an expert on greyhounds and their blood idiosyncrasies. Consult Link Article on why greyhounds bleed

Did you run a tick panel??

No, not yet. She just ran the test for Von Willebrand's. After those results came back neg. today, I was wondering if a TBD could be the cause and if a tick panel would be appropriate.

Has a platelet count ever been done? Also, are you giving fish oil by any chance - it has properties that will cause aspirin like effects (slows clotting). Some dog foods are now including fish oil and unfortunately they don't list how much so, you might want to read the ingredients.

Hope you get to the bottom of her clotting issues.

Our last Dobe was very badly affected with VWD....she had less than 2% clotting factor.

I know that 90 seconds for your dog sounds like a long time, but hers never fully clotted at all. Ever.

She required infusions of cryoprecipitate before during and after her spay. Thankfully, we have an animal blood bank right here.
