I have a voice mail/email in to Dr Marin, but I need to know if the OSU Greyhound wellness program will treat an AKC Greyhound with osteo. I fortunately have not had to deal with this before, I have had my Greys to OSU for other issues, but not osteo. What fees are involved for osteo treatment at OSU, I believe I had read they do chemo at no charge? What about amputation?? Any answers I can get while waiting for a response would be VERY much appreciated!!

Thank you!!

We received help from OSU for lymphoma treatments, not osteo. But, I do believe I remember them saying that Bonnie was eligible for free chemo because she was a retired racer. I am sure they will consult with you and do everything else. Not sure if the chemo will be at no charge though.

Sorry you're going through this. :grouphug

I'm sure they will do the consult through the online consultation form. However, they specifically state that the free chemo is for racing greyhounds (I'm not sure if that would cover untattooed NGA hounds). I do not believe that they will provide the drug for free for an AKC hound (if anyone knows better, please correct me).

The free chemo is just the drug - all related bloodwork, administration, follow-up, etc. is not free. If you are local, you of course can have it done there, otherwise they will overnight it to your oncologist.

I brought Twiggy (NGA grey) to OSU for her amputation, and the total costs including ultrasound guided needle biopsy, x-rays, surgery, 5 days hospital stay, all her meds, anesthesia, etc. etc. was approx $3,800. I was shocked at how little the final bill was. (I've had a ton of other expenses related to this, but the OSU/amputation-specific costs were much less than I expected).

I'm sorry you are going through this, too. It will get easier, though. If you have any other questions about what to expect, feel free to PM me or post them here.

Thank you for the info so far. I should have added, this is not my dog, I am a vet tech and a client just brought this dog in. It was out of the blue, she just started limping, but I knew as soon as I saw her, and radiographs confirmed it. She is a gorgeous white girl, only 6 years old and an absolute doll. Her owner of course is absolutely devastated, she did not know about OSU, so I am trying to help her out as much as I can.

Retired racing hounds are eligible for the free chemo; OSU is like any other business, they'll treat any dog. The special services are only available to retired racers I believe.

I know OSU will treat any dog, I just needed to know if they would include AKC dogs in the free chemo, cost is an issue for this owner. I did just speak with Dr Marin and she said AKC Greyhounds ARE included, so if anyone needs that for future reference.

Good to know that AKC hounds are included, too. I will tuck that info away in case it ever is handy.

I should elaborate on the costs. There were also original x-rays at my vets office, and I haven't included the chemotherapy related costs. (Even with the free chemo, it is about $500 per treatment, plus follow-up CBC a week later each time). Then, there are periodic x-rays, etc. So, overall, the costs usually wind up around $8-10,000 for treatment (and can go higher, depending on what additional supportive measures you take).

Could you keep us posted on this girl?? I have never heard of an AKC GH with OS. Fingers crossed it's not.

Sure, I will try to update. We know for sure that it IS osteo, very sad. Right now it is looking like the owner will amputate, she is still so devastated that it is hard for her to think. I think cost will prohibit her from going to OSU.

If she's online, make sure you send her over here... LOTS of great info on post-amp care!!

My cat is getting chemo for lymphoma right now and the costs will vary greatly. The actual drugs are expensive, in my case about 50% of the bill (about $250/treatment) for each treatment is drugs. My regular vet is doing it, I would have had to travel 2+ hrs each way to have a specialist do it and that wasn't an option with my kitty. I guess what I'm getting at is encourage your client to check out her options, they may be more affordable than she thinks, especially if she can get the chemo drugs free from OSU.

Thanks! I just checked back in this thread to see if anyone knew for sure. Great to know.

I second this. Also, if it makes a difference, local greyhound owners can put her and her hound up in Columbus while she visits OSU. So there wouldn't be any hotel charges. OSU charged me about $100 -$130 for each chemo visit (includes bloodwork, chemo administration, exam and of course the free chemo drugs). Let me know if she is coming to OSU and I will help with arrangements.
