told vet she lost interest in eating where before she was very food driven and she was lethargic. she noticed how riley's breathing was excessive. x-rays taken, ekg done and bloodwork. she listened to her heart and heard something she didn't like. had an ultrasound done and the vet was great as he let me watch and explained everything to me. her left ventricle is not pumping as it should. diagnosis is dilated cardiomyopathy. placed on lanoxin. don't know what the future holds or what life expectancy might be. great dog. hate to lose her but apparently there's no cure.

Sugar was on lasix and enalipril for a couple of years, and vetmedin was added for the last year, digoxin did not work for her. I hope the vet can come up with a combo of meds to make her comfortable. There is no cure, but it can be managed, and lasix and enalapril aren't terribly expensive.

Pearl was put on vetmedin in her last year too. It's a miracle drug for dogs. Her heart actually improved. She fought heart disease for 7 yrs until cancer of the spleen took her last year.

I know you've seen a vet, have you seen a cardiologist?

if you are addressing me, yes i have had an ultrasound done

Having an ultrasound done is not the same as consulting with a veterinary cardiologist, or even an internal medicine specialist. Many general practice vets can do ultrasound - some more skilled than others. I would be very surprised if a cardiology specialist treated a suspected case of congestive heart failure due to DCM with nothing but Lanoxin (digoxin). There are much better, more effective heart meds these days.

I see that you're in Darlington, SC? The closest veterinary cardiologist would probably be in Charlotte, NC. We don't have a cardiologist in Columbia, so the internists here see many of the cardiology cases and are very experienced.

Scarlett was diagnosed with a heart problem when she was 4 years old (sorry--I can't remember the name of it). Anywho, the two cardiologists that saw her said dogs with her condition usually did not make it past 5-6 years. She was taking atenolol and enalapril which we could get at Walmart for $4 per month. She lived until she was 12 years old and we sent her to the bridge in January because of osteo. Hoping Riley is ok!

Aw, hope the enalapril does her good and she regains some taste for other things.

My late girl Zema took a low dose of enalapril for high blood pressure and minor cardiac insufficiency. She never seemed to feel poorly tho so not a comparable situation. I did end up splitting the dose and giving half morning, half evening; a higher dose all at once made her a little sleepy.

That's what we did too. Initially my vet had it at just once per day but it did work best to split it up.

Zema didn't have many symptoms -- she drank too much water and had to pee a lot, and she had very high blood pressure. IIRC we rechecked blood pressure after @ 10 days on meds and it had come down into the realm of reason. It was still high because she was frightened at the vet but not unbelievably high. I didn't see a difference in drinking and urination until I changed her to a very low salt, limited ingredient, homeprepped diet. Then the drinking too much and excessive urination stopped :), and her blood pressure dropped another @ 20 points. So, not really comparable symptoms to yours but maybe that gives you some ideas.
