Skin Rash Help Pls.

I am in need of anyone's assistance, my beautiful 7 yr old grey had a bump that was red circle and looked black on the top - the spot it was right on the front of her hind leg.

Since she was having trouble sitting and looked like she was in pain walking, I immediately took her to Vet.

What is odd, is that last night she was fine no problem sitting nor walking.

While I was at the vet, I noticed several more little rashes on her legs. It was like they were developing in front of our eyes. I left about 40 minutes while they were waiting on the results of her blood tests and when I arrived back there were 2 lesions in her mouth (they look like blisters) and the rash spread between the webbing of her toes as well as another bump on her belly.

They have no idea and my grey vet was not on call.

Heartworm/Lyme test came back negative.

Anyone else encounter this? I realize this is very difficult, but if I could find something on what it could be that maybe I could look up on line, I would be very appreciative.

Thank you in advance.

Her big brother and littermate has not moved since we came home, it is so sad my heart is breaking.

It's hard to tell from what you are describing. With how quickly it came on and progressed, it sounds most likely like a severe allergic reaction perhaps to a bug bite/sting of some sort.

How is she doing? What does the vet say?

Pictures?

You don't need a "greyhound vet" for everything--mostly greyhounds are dogs so any vet should be able to help with this.

Sounds to ME like an allergic reaction, probably contact. Did they give her anything? Antihistamines?

We just came from the vet, where she has been all night.

First let me say nothing makes your heart fuller than to see your grey's tailing wag (even a little) when they see you. We waiting (like paparazzi) for when they were walking the dogs in ICU and when the girl brought my grey out for her morning potty break we checked on her. She immediately recognized all of us and her brother went right up to her - checking if she got better food than him! Always the big brother.

Did not get photos but they are treating her as if it is a tick related disease or Rocky Mountain. It still seems early in Northern VA for ticks, but the vet would rather take the most aggressive attack just in case.

They have put her on an IV and giving her Doxcycline they may have done or will do a Hydromophone injection if they do a biopsy.

The tick panel will be sent to NC tomorrow (no fedex on weekends).

The original bump is more red now (not sure if they cleaned it or if it is reduced). The vet will biopsy the bump and send that away tomorrow if they do not see results with the medication today.

Her legs are all swollen, but think that the swelling is related to the amount of fluids being pushed through her body or something that happened with the Catheter.

My husband and I go around in circles trying to see if there is anything we can think of - could it be the fertilizer that the homeowners association put on the grass about a week half ago, could it be that she was at a location where it is known that there are ticks 15 days ago, could it be she got into something that we do not know about (we have no poisons in the house). My husband thinks she may have been bit by a spider or bug and she is just reacting to the bite - probably an allergic reaction since it came upon her so quickly.

On a positive note, she walked down stairs this morning and she could barely do that yesterday. Her hind legs are shaking/trembling, but she is able to walk and there are a lot of stairs, she did all her business and it was normal, which is also good and she recognized us albeit that she is a little out of it. She kept watching us as she went back inside, so that is positive also.

We are waiting for the morning update from the Vet and I am going to ask about the possible bug bites and antihistamines.

Thanks for all your help.

You said the vet is giving doxy & pain meds... are they not giving diphenhydramine? Such sudden and quickly escalating rash etc. just really sounds like an allergic reaction.

I googled Rocky Mountain, Lyme, and other TBD but none of them seem to have the skin symptoms you described. It just doesn't seem to fit!!!

Of course we aren't seeing the bloodwork or other diagnostics your vet is doing. If you could post that information I'm sure we could all be MUCH more helpful!

They are still trying to guess/grasp what it is that is impacting her. Their biggest concern is that her front legs are all swollen with fluid so they are retesting her protein rates to see if there was any change and now her left eye is bloodshot, otherwise the rash has stopped "expanding". That is positive.

She has never had anything before and they are thinking of testing for babesia, but I find that hard to believe that a grey that has been off the track for 5 years would get that disease. Her littermate, which we have, raced with her for all but 6 months and he is fine.

I mentioned the poisoning from fertilizer, snake bite or spider bite and taking an antihistamine. They said this is a similar treatment with the exception of the Doxycycline.

As for her blood tests, I tried to compare her numbers to the Care of the Racing & Retired Greyhound and I have no idea what I am looking at. I am holding out the greatest hope that her doctor will be in tomorrow and can quickly figure out what is happening.

Here are the numbers from her blood work, I tried to cross-reference the Care of the Racing & Retired Greyhound and I realize that I do not even have the slightest understanding. I also recognize that I am relying on my vets to figure this out, but again any other insight wold be helpful.

Thank you so much. I am going to bring it up with the dr tomorrow.

Again, thank you for helping my beautiful little girl.

Her ALT (a liver enzyme) seems pretty high on the bloodwork - did the vet comment on that?

I wouldn't rule out any TBD just because she hasn't been exposed to any ticks recently and has been off the track 5 years. Many TBD can stay dormant for years. Another one to consider might be Bartonella, which is what the specialists thought my girl had last year.

Hard to tell from your description of the rash. What does your vet think it is? Are all the areas true rashes in the sense of being inflamed skin, or are any of them small areas of bruising (petechia)?

We took her to a new vet - an internist.

They still do not know what is causing the swelling and the Edema - a vascular condition is the biggest concern. Her poor little legs and paws are so swollen.

They are anxious to give her steroids as to suppress her immune system, in case she has a Tick Born Disease and they want the "doxy" to work.

They did a ultrasound and everything was fine. Her protein is dropping from the leaking in her paws. They are going to put her on poly-fretenol (spelling is incorrect).

She was so happy to see me and settled down in the car quickly. I so badly wanted to take her home, but I left her with the new internist to see what will happen tonight. They want to get her back home with us tomorrow, while we continue to wait on the NC tests to come back. I am not sure I see her coming home, as her poor little legs are so swollen and bruised from being stretched.

Please send your positive thoughts to her, she needs them now.

Thank you.

There is still no great improvement in the vasculitus.

The internal medicine doctors still do not know what is the cause and we have done a battery of tests.

It feels like everything is spiraling out of control, the tests, the late night and early morning phone calls to ICU, and the emotional roller coaster.

Today we will bring her home and see what happens. We plan on putting warm compasses on her legs to see if that will help with the vasculitus, not sure what else beside the medicine that we can do, since there is no cause yet. Hopefully, something shows up today.

Atleast if she is at home, then I will feel better that she is with her brother and family.

So far, she is doing well.

She walked in the house and immediately walked over to her big brother's kennel, as to let him know she was back.

I had to get him out of the kennel as he was beating his tail against the sides so hard. No more visits to the vet!!

The swelling in her paws is significantly reduced, she is still bruised, but she is relieved to be home and sleeping soundly.

We are not out of the woods as her platelets are low (but not critical), but it looks like we are moving in the right direction.

I think she is liking the foot and leg messages a lot.

Thank you for your positive thoughts and assistance.
