Cervical Disk Surgery

Recommended Posts

Zim is experiencing terrible neck & leg pain. 2 vets think she has a herniated disk in her neck. She is currently on 2 pain meds & still is in pain although much better then the weekend. Spoke to my vet today who mentioned if she has continued pain she may need neck surgery to release the pressure on the nerve. Anybody gone through this? It's the last option in my mind but she cannot continue in pain like this. :(

I would have further diagnostics done first such a a ct scan. My girl has a tweeky neck. She has had horrible neck pain in the past which involved front leg lameness. She responded with cortico-steroids and tramadol. It took almost 2 weeks before I would say she was back to her ole self. I now only walk her with a harness because I believe her neck pain was due to her pulling on the leash with a collar. Knock wood, it's been almost a year now that she's been neck pain free. Cervical neck problems appear to be rather common with our retired racing hounds.

John E had neck pain and did well on tramadol, chiropractor and accupuncture. Good luck with your girl.

My Rhonda had lost the use of her backend & an x-ray showed 2 discs in her cervical spine pressing against a nerve. Started her on acupuncture right away with great results. It will be 2 years in March since her backend gave out on her & you would never know she even had a problem. She is now on maintenance acupuncture.......every 6 months. Good luck with your baby.

My first yorkie Axel had a ruptured disc when we lived in Illinois. We went to the speciality vet and sat in a room full of doxies to have the speciality vet say

"$1,000 and it may or might not work -- the next disc down may or may not rupture from the stress. Leave your credit card at the front desk."

I talked to my vet and as Axel was at least 11 we didn't do it.

When my 6 year old greyhound Rex had LS he responded well to Depro shots but then something went wrong in his neck. One of my biggest regrets in life was trying chiro where the AVCA certified hurt my mellow Rex so bad he had to be muzzled for the three visits. My then vet said his first choice would be accupuncture as it has a much more proven clinical track record as opposed to chiro but I listened to others and have never quit regretting it. Then the specialists told me that time that it was either a smorles nodule or GME for what was in his shoulder and offered me an MRI right then as they had a cancellation for $1,200. Didn't do that either. My vet said why spend $1,200 to see whicjh of really bad things it was.

White light and healing to both you and Zim but I am not a fan of spinal surgery in dogs. :(

What is a smordle nodule or GME? I'm not familar with these terms. Zim is still in agony on rimydayl & tramadol. Now to top it off she is having voluminous diarrhea. She feels so miserable. Anybody out there actually have the surgery? Any input would be appreciated. In the back of my mind I keep feeling like she has OS but xrays back in 9/2010 were negative.
