My Update On John Curly

Guest Dana

Recommended Posts

I just wanted to get back to all of you who have been so supportive and let you know what is going on.

John's surgery was scheduled for Friday morning. The vet's office called about an hour before I was to have John there and said they had an emergency and had to cancel the morning surgery. They offered to do the surgery the next day. I said I would call to reschedule. I actually felt relieved.

I couldn't do it. It didn't feel right and it still doesn't. My hat is certainly off to you who seem to be able to make a decision and stick to it. I have been so back and forth about this. John is my first grey. I have had many other animals, none like this boy. He is truly a prince and I only want what is best for him. He has always actually seemed grateful to live here with us. I'm not sure about the amputation and I am not sure what I will do in that regard. What I am sure of is how much I love this boy and he will get the absolute best care that I can give.

I just wanted to write the group and let all know what was going on. I am very thankful for your advice and understanding. ~~Dana

I'm with you, if you're not sure, wait until you are. Do what you think is the absolute best you can do for your boy. You know him better than any one else.

It's an extraordinarily difficult, situational, and personal decision. You can only do what seems best for you and your precious boy. :goodluck and :grouphug

Follow your heart in making the best decision for your boy and it will be the right one. We are treating Sirocco's os with pain meds, kisses, and strawberry shortcakes (with whippy cream). Even if he was younger, I could not seriously consider amputation because of his personality. He is brassy, bold, and sweet as long as he is with his people or fur siblings. By himself, he is an absolute wreck. I just couldn't put him through the trauma of being away from his home to do the surgery. For us, it is absolutely the right decision. For someone else, it would be the wrong one.

Don't be pressured to make a particular decision. No one else can weigh your family dynamics, finances, and probable outcomes like you can.

Dana,

There is no right or wrong in a decision such as this. It's a very personal and emotional decision that only you can make based on what you know about John. This disease is hideous and steals many too soon. Hang in there, your heart will tell you what's right for you and your pup.

You don't need to feel bad Dana! if you felt relieved then that speaks volumes, doesnt it! You can always revisit the issue if circumstances or situations change.

We amputated George's leg because he was only 3 and we felt we caught it early enough to hope that was enough. (on a personal note, we decided not to do chemo because we were trying for another baby and we had enough infertility with the first one that we didnt want to mess around with it - and we were pregnant by the time we lost George.) but ya know, hubby felt afterwards that it was very much a wrong decision to amputate, and he would fight me every inch of the way if I wanted to do that again for another dog. So even if you make the decision once, it doesnt mean that you make the same one again! (I am glad that with nearly 10 yr old Chase we are dealing with a different cancer and don't have that choice to fight over... err... make. :blush
