Update Of Lump In Mouth

So my guy went to the dentist today regarding the lump in his mouth I posted about last Friday. They kept him to biopsy the lump but I just spoke with the dentist. He's thinking it is an epulis as it had a narrow base. They are still sending it out for biopsy but he feels it's not too concerning. They will need to go back in to do a full removal which means he'll lose two of his front teeth but he will do fine with that.

However, while they were in there they found a pouch of fluid in the back of his throat so they brought in a surgeon to take a look at it. He feels it's a type of rupture of the salivary glands (at least this is what I understood but my cell phone was breaking up) and they are recommending that the glands be removed. This could explain all the weird breathing problems I posted about over the Winter that would suddenly appear and disappear. So, he needs surgery to remove the glands. It's more involved and will require an overnight stay. They did send a sample of the fluid to cytology for analysis. Fortunately, they feel if he's tolerating the surgery well, they will be able to tag team each other and remove the teeth at the same time.

I'm so glad I took him to Angell Memorial in Boston. Where else can you go and drop off a dog at noon, be called within two hours with a report from two specialists. They really have earned their reputation for being one of the top veterinary hospitals in the country. Now, just passing the time until I can pick him up. Thanks everyone for the kind words. I'll will post more updates as they become available.

I am so glad you posted, I was wondering how it was going. Good news, and the bad mews can be fixed. That's good news too!

I know the second part was unexpected, but the surgeons sounded confident that it can be fixed. That's worth a lot! It's not what you wanted to hear, but not as bad as it could have been. Will be sending prayers for a smooth surgery and an uneventful recover. Please keep us posted!

Prayers on the way for very boring biopsy & cytology reports plus an update on how splendidly he handle the surgery. :) I know it was more than you expected to hear but if it takes care of the weird breathing along with the dental issues that's great news. Still leave you with some mixed emotions though, at least it would for me.

Thanks everyone! Still waiting on all results before I can schedule next steps. He came home the same day and did beautifully recovering from the anesthesia which is good because I had to fly out of town the next day and was nervous to leave him. Thankfully my niece is home from college for the Summer and was able to keep watch while I was gone.

I thought I would post this video from this Winter with the breathing issue that would appear suddenly and disappear just as quickly. Just in case anyone else experiences this, salivary glands might be a good thing to check. I was convinced he was heading towards LP at the time.

Here's the video. Make sure you turn up your volume.

So all the tests are in and everything is as they expected. The lump is benign and the cytology report came back as either an abscess or this other thing which I can’t remember the name of but that is what it is. Had they not seen it, they might have tried a course of antibiotics but with them seeing it and me knowing about the breathing issues he’s had, it makes sense to move ahead with the plan for surgical removal. Turns out the surgeon, Dr. Pavletic, is the director of surgical department with years of experience so I feel comfortable moving forward with him at this time. We have a consult scheduled for Monday morning. So, one step behind us and few ahead of us to get through.
