I've never had to deal with this before. How do I treat him? Do I need to treat Daisy and the kitties? What do I do about the bedding? Help!!! As far as the kitties, I'm not sure, I don't have cats. Tomorrow after work is flea & tick bath and Frontline time and a conversation with my vet. Guest DylanGospel Posted October 22, 2009 Share Posted October 22, 2009 This is the first year that I've ever seen them on a new foster, too. We pulled them off and put them in alcohol to kill them. Then we used Frontline Plus asap. I also use it on our cat, but check with your vet to see if it's necessary. They sure are creepy, aren't they? After I read this thread, I googled ticks (as I have never had to deal with them, nor have I known anyone who has) and they creep me the heck out! It sounds like you are dealing with nits (baby ticks) and they can carry TBD. I'd check with the vet about doing a tick/flea bath and then treating with Frontline on a greyhound. Guest greytloves Posted October 22, 2009 Share Posted October 22, 2009 Ecckkk.... One of the ONLY things I can't take are ticks. Give me anal glands, wounds, dirt anything over ticks!!! Get something like Adams Spray and spray everything really good. Also make sure and mow your grass low and use something like diatmecous earth. I take it they aren't native to your area? Well, wherever you are, it's hugely important not to have leaf piles around because that's one of the big places they hide. Around here, deer mice are the biggest carriers -- those and chipmunks. Our Tick-borne disease specialist at URI has a whole regimen for making your yard safer and they are even developing pre-treated clothing for kids to wear when playing outside in the spring, summer and fall. My dogs will come in with ticks in the middle of winter too-- so I am Always checking. To remove them, get a good grip and twist them out clockwise (think unscrewing them).. you don't want to leave the head in your dog. They can be dropped into jars of alcohol or dropped in the sink (to be brutally exterminated by decapitation by this derranged, tick-phobic dog mom! grrrrrrrr). ALL kinds of ticks can carry tick-borne diseases, not just deer ticks. They say that they have to bite and be attached for a certain length of time to transmit the disease -- but I don't count on that. I get them off and dead asap. (Incase I'm sounding a bit rabid over this, I am. I contracted Lyme disease back in 2003 and have rheumatoid arthritis as a side effect; my husband died of Babesia in 2007. DH washed the blanket that was in his crate in hot water. I'm calling the vet in the morning so that we can take all necessary precautions and I'm calling the adoption kennel to let them know they may have something of an infestation. After looking at way more pictures of ticks than I've ever wanted to, I'm pretty sure these were immature deer ticks. Hopefully we will avoid any complications. I sprayed all of mine, weekly with Adams Flea and Tick Mist, as well as their bedding, ... no problems after that. No fleas, either. Good Luck! HATE TICKS!!!! Can you give me the URI contact information or regimen for making my yard safe. I already look like an idiot walking my dogs with my pants tucked in my socks and my shirt tucked into my pants. But those ticks are SO tiny, I can't feel them if they make it up to the back of my neck. The girls are all Frontlined. Sucks.....dont' they?! Hopefully I won't have to wash the cats, too. We'll frontline the dogs 3 days after the shampoos. Hopefully this will take care of everything! We've also got a vet appointment on Monday. I hate ticks. But I must add that dropping them into a bowl with vinegar killed them pretty quickly. I took in a short-term foster and he had those immature deer ticks, too Adams spray works great! I even sprayed my car's interior to ensure no tick survived.
