Guest wjamg
Peace had surgery to remove a perianal tumor this past Tuesday. Yesterday, her bottom swelled and was very tender to the touch. Today, it ruptured. Its a pretty big ulcer and its really draining. I talked to the vet and some of the anal gland wasn't completely removed so it continued to leak and formed an abscess. I am just sick over this. Does anyone have experience with the healing process of a ruptured anal gland?
Rickiesmom
I do, in fact we are in the process of this with Arlie, however, not as an adjunct to surgery. In our case the vet flushed the abcess and Arlie is on antibiotics - initially Clavamox but as that didn't seem to be doing the job, we switched today to Baytril. I wish I had had the presence of mind to request a culture, which I will definitely do if there isn't significant improvement at the recheck on Wednesday. Arlie is also on Metacam for pain-relief / anti-inflammation. Tramadol also an option for pain control if needed. Good luck with Peace - these things are miserable on their own, let alone on top of recovery from surgery. As a sidebar, if you need something to stop licking, I learned about and got a product today called DermiCare. It makes bitter apple seem luscious. Chicocat
Cutie had one burst -- I was visiting here in Springfield and the vet flushed it and gave me antibiotics. She had to have surgery a couple weeks later after I got back to KC to close the wound. She hasn't had any problems since -- it's been probably 5 years now. The vet thought it was at first sight but after looking at the cells, it was determined to be an abcess. More antiobiotics and pain meds, hope this heals quickly. Rickiesmom
How is Peace this evening? It may be early for the additional antibiotics to kick in, but hopefully the pain meds at least are bringing her some relief and perhaps reducing her inclination to lick. You have both been much on my mind - hope you and Peace were able to rest today. Arlie sends gentle nose dabs to her look-alike friend. Guest greytexplorer
Call your vet and ask about an antibiotic shot called Convenia. If you can get that for Peace, you won't have to pill her, which makes the home environment more, er, peaceful. And she'll feel better quicker too! peace on you, ~Pat
