Guest dwolfe711
(Unfortunately, all of her pics are before digital camera and this is about the only one we've scanned!) On July 2, 2003 we sent our 12yo Toby to the Bridge after a 2 year battle with hemangiosarcoma. She was our first grey, sweet baby, perfect girl! She came to us right from training at Raynham at almost-2 - never raced - never cared to run - given the chance in an enclosed area she would do a slow lap and then roam around for hours smelling every tree, flower, plant, thing! Going on walks was like standing still - heaven forbid she missed sniffing one mailbox or telephone pole or flower or lawn - the neighbors would laugh and say things like - "that's no greyhound - she never runs"!! So much for DH's idea of having a greyhound for a jogging partner!! We still refer to our office as "Toby's room" as that is where she would go to sleep every night after about an hour in our bedroom. Everyone loved Toby - she was our introduction to greyhounds and the greyhound culture. We first found out about Dewey when she was 9 - she went with us for three years and there we met her half-brother (same sire) Brock and his Dad, Ed. It is a friendship which endures today even though Toby and Brock both are at the Bridge. She was the beginning of our love for greyhounds - since her loss we have adopted 8 others - all senior returns but one (Ripley adopted off the track at 4.5) and if she had not made her way into our lives purely by coincidence, we may not have had the joy of knowing greyhounds and of meeting so many, many wonderful greyhound friends and acquaintances, including those on this board! We miss you sweetie and hope you are smiling down with satisfaction every time another grey enters our lives! On July 2, 2007 we sent our 12yo Duncan to the Bridge after a 3-month battle with osteo. Duncan - our fourth adoption - our sweet, silly omega boy - what joy he brought into our lives! We met him when our friends fostered him after he was returned by his first family - we dogsat him for a week while they went on vacation - our intent was to adopt him if he fit in with our pack of two - and he was perfect from the day he walked through the door. He never went back to his foster parents and we adopted him right before his 9th birthday. We had no idea of the omega mindset until Duncan - he was content to be last for everything - if he had to go out and went to the door and was standing there first in line, he would not go out until all the others went out before him. Lizzy and then Allie (our two female alphas) would not let him run and play with the others - if he ran they would bark at him and he would stop and stand and watch - so we would take him out alone or with Ripley and then he would run and play. He never pushed into the crowd to get his treat - he simply stood back and waited for everyone else to get one and then he would take his. Sometimes it would make me sad - but he could have cared less! He was a great rooer - the only grey we've had who rooed - but would not do it anywhere but in our house or yard - he refused to roo out in public! And what a love-bug - he was always ready for some lovin! Or treats!! There will never be another boy like our Duncan - we miss him every single day! Guest KyGrey
What wonderful stories about your friends. I remember the donation that was brought to Bluegrass in Duncan's honor in 2007 by Kim. That's when I first learned about him. He made a big impact on people's lives. I didn't know about Toby but she had to be a mover and shaker too. I know you miss these two but they are still with you in spirit and will be always remembered. :bighug

Hawthorn
Wonderful memories of your two beautiful friends. Quote When a relationship of love is disrupted, the relationship does not cease. The love continues; therefore, the relationship continues.
