KF_in_Georgia
My Sam's been having digestive issues--lots of soft poop, sometimes completely liquid. We recently tried three days of Panacur and six days of Metronidazole with no improvement (lots of soft, greeny-brown poop). Now we're trying Tylan powder. The nasty taste isn't a problem for us. Sam's a gulper-of-food, not a chewer. I can put the Tylan in the center of a cheese slice, fold it up and squeeze it to seal the powder inside, and just hold it out for Sam to gulp. Never thought I'd be so happy to have a dog who doesn't chew his food... Sam's had two days on Tylan, and this afternoon he's a bit nuts. Nice-nuts, but nuts. He's throwing his toys and pouncing on them and showing lots more energy than he usually displays (he's nine--and the prototypical couch potato). Possibly, he's just feeling better (although there's been no improvement on the poop-front). But I'm wondering if other folks have seen their couch potatoes go high-energy on Tylan... dante2zoe
I never noticed a behavior change, but then again, he was new to us and all his behaviors were changing as he adapted to his new situation. Guest houndlover
I also didn't notice a behavior change. It does sound like Sam is feeling much better though so that is great new! Edited June 19, 2009 by houndlover
KF_in_Georgia
I'm going to keep using the cheese for a while. We're doing the Tylan for three weeks. If it's working, we might try him on a maintenance dose long-term, if we need to. (Both dogs had chicken backs in March and got sick. We did nine days of metronidazole: Jacey got better and is fine, Sam is better-worse-better-worse with no explanation.) Anyway, if we have to keep him on a maintenance dose, I'll get capsules and fill them. But since he has to have cheese anyway (he also takes thyroid pills, and I've always used cheese to make sure he swallows the pill instead of flicking it across the room with that huge tongue of his), I'll do this first three weeks of meds with cheese. GreyPoopon
I keep tylocine in stock due to Minnie's IBD and (with my vet's encouragement) often use it for diarrhea. I think every dog in the house has been on it at one time or another. I don't think I've ever seen sillyness as a side effect. I too suspect that he's just feeling better. Newgreymom
You might be interested in using some digest enzymes. Dylan had poop problems for a long time, and we used Tylan which really helped. I started using digest enzymes and have not had a bout of the poops in ages. Just a thought for you...
KF_in_Georgia
Did probiotics and yogurt without improvement. Also pumpkin. (Not all at once.) He'd be wonderful for a day or so, soft poop more often, and completely liquid about once a month--when he'd been consistently eating the same food (and no table treats) all along. The first two days after I started him on probiotics, he was great. The next three days were soft. Then a liquid blow-out. Go figure. Thankfully, no vomiting, and his appetite is wonderful. If the Tylan doesn't do it, I'm going to try to see if it's an allergy--although I'd expect an allergy to consistently make him sick, not good-bad-worse from day to day. But I'll try tampering with his diet, eliminating some items, etc. But since he only gets really bad about once a month, it could take a long time to find the culprit if this is diet-related.
