Maddiesmom
Ok- here's is the situation, I found some (what I am assuming to be like fleas on Maddie) they were brown, had wings and squished when i got got them off her (eww I know). (I have "bombed the house" with the carpet stuff, washed Maddie and her beds and gave her a Capstar to be on the safe side of heading off a big inestation or possible reinfestation in the future. I am assuming that she has built up a resistance to her Frontline Plus so I talked to our vet this morning about switching her to another flea preventative. The vet tech talked about Comfortis (which I have heard and read about) however, not sure if I want to swtich to Comfortis as I am hesistant about switching her to a product that I have little or no information on (other then the brochure and reading on line). I know that the pill is given - instead of applying to their coat. All of the greyhound owners I know, use Frontline Plus, K-9 Advantix, Advantage etc. So my question is- how many people here use Comfortis for flea preventative on their greyhounds? and what are the side effects if any? and how long has your grey been on Comfortis. Any information is greatly appreciated. Quote Amy Human Mommy to fur baby Maddie (Doobiesaurus) TDI certified. macoduck
Hi Amy We've been using Comfortis for about 6 months with no problems. We also use Interceptor for heartworm prevention. I chose the Comfortis because it is made by the same company that makes Capstar. Plus any topical flea killers will drive Gracie insane. I give the Comfortis and Interceptor a few weeks apart from each other just so I don't overload their tummies. Guest hvacman250
I use it and love it. Side effects are the same as what you might watch for from vaccinations: vomiting, big d, etc
Guest wmlcml6
My friend has started giving it to her two greys. Advantage and Frontline were NOT working, but the Comfortis is getting rid of the bugs.
Guest Gert
I've been giving it for 2 months now to my two. No issues and NO FLEAS!! Frontline nor Advantage were working on the tough, Florida fleas! Like someone else mentioned, I give their Heartgard Plus and Comfortis about 2 weeks apart.

Guest boondog
I was just talking about this with Dillon's acupuncturist. Thanks for posting this Maddiesmom. For those of you that use it, how much does it cost?
Maddiesmom
I was just talking about this with Dillon's acupuncturist. Thanks for posting this Maddiesmom. For those of you that use it, how much does it cost? No problem. I meant to do it earlier but kept forgetting, now the bugs or (whatever they are) are here and I am trying to nip it in the "bud" before it becomes a big problem. Maddie is on Frontline plus and has been since I got her in October 2005, however this is a first of having them for us. My vet quoted like $68 (i think or approximately) for a 6 pack of comfortis- Dtrs foster and smith have it for 71.99 for the 60.1-120# dogs Edited June 8, 2009 by Maddiesmom Quote Amy Human Mommy to fur baby Maddie (Doobiesaurus) TDI certified. Guest KennelMom
Does it only work on fleas, not ticks? Frontline doesn't work here, but Advantage still does a good job. Never hurts to have a back up though...
Guest Gert
I ordered mine from Allivet.com. It was $65.99/6 pack. You do need a prescription from your vet to order. Heather, it does not work on ticks.
Guest Energy11
Hi Amy! Nice meeting you at Mt. Hounds! I was warned NOT to use this product AT ALL on greyhounds by the vet I used to work for. Therefore, I won't use it. I DO like Sentinel HW protection, as it makes the fleas in your dogs' area, sterile. Just my two cents. Take care! dex95lucy
I work on a greyhound farm. Our greyhound vet, who specializes in greys, prescribes Comfortis. She orders the packs for the largest dogs and I break the pills in half for the smaller dogs per her instructions. We have been using this since last autumn or so and FINALLY have had absolutely no fleas since shortly after starting it. We spent a fortune for years on Frontline, Advantage, and other products. We were at our wits end trying to get control of the fleas. All autumn, winter, spring, and now going into summer we have been flea-less. Anyone who has dealt with a nasty flea infestation knows the the intense amount of work involved, the cost, the frustration with failing, the awful feeling of defeat and having failed the poor dogs. Can't count the times I left work crying with frustration. We have seen no side effects, as compared to some dogs who lost hair at the application site of drop products. As with any chemical use, there will be dogs who will have side effects. But so far I have seen only happy flea free dogs. The down side is that it does not deal with ticks. But I have to wonder as we also have no ticks. When we had fleas, we also had ticks. Now we have neither. Hope this helps. Sue
silverfish
I have no experience with Comfortis, which I've never even heard of - but I can tell you that fleas don't have wings. Guest rogueslg71
just a question why are some of you giving it apart from the heartworm preventions? i normally give the flea and heartworm prevention at the same time at the beginning of each month to mine - does it make it not work or something? Guest Mom2Gr8dawgs
I started using Comfortis in November. We had battled fleas for months, and nothing else was working and poor KC has an allergy to fleas. It does a wonderful job! I gave them the dose in November and didn't see any more fleas until February when we got a foster who was a return that came in covered with fleas. We gave all the dogs a Comfortis then, and didn't need another one until May! I'll probably give them monthly through the summer, but we FINALLY got the fleas under control thanks to Comfortis. The vet we buy this from charges $70 for a 6 pack.

Guest luvmydogs
I saw this posting- just wanted to clarify- Comfortis and Capstar are not made by the same company. Capstar is made by Novartis and Comfortis is made by Lily. JoanBelleIsle
I'll add my two cents to this one. For the past few years my guys seem to pick up a flea infestation in the late summer. I wrestled with all the usual flea stuff, and although they seemed to diminish the population some, they never fully did the job. Of course the struggle lasted for long enough that I probably had all the carpets and beds in the house infested with flea eggs anyway. I can't remember exactly how I heard about Comfortis. None of the local vets carry it, so if you didn't know it existed, they weren't going to be of much help. I asked the same question about it here last year. Got generally positive response, including from some folks that had a lot of dogs in their care. So, I gave it a try. It's a little pricey and you have to search out a source, but it works where nothing else does. And no side effects in my dogs. It's my flea treatment of choice now. Cheers, Joan
Devotion
I've used comfortis for over a year on all mine. The majority of the vets in the Houston area recommend this over other flea products. Seems like so many of the other products aren't effective any longer. None of mine have ever had issue with it. However, I always give it with a meal. I too space out the comfortis and heartworm treatment by two weeks just to be safe. Also, if you give the meds separately, if your dog does have a reaction to something, you'll know what he/she is reacting to. Regarding ticks: A customer at work (I'm a dog groomer) brought in his pug. The pug is on Comfortis and had no fleas--but had three attached ticks. This year, in the metro Atlanta area, we're actually seeing more ticks than fleas. And we really are metro Atlanta--the pug lives in downtown Atlanta and has a grassy yard to run around in--no woods at all. montgomery2524
they were brown, had wings and squished when i got got them off her Do fleas have wings and squish? I always found them hard to kill and would cut them in half with a fingernail. Hate to treat the girl for fleas when it is just gnats bothering her. As for Comfortis, mine all just got their dose in preparation for Mountain Hounds. It costs around the same as Frontline if I remember right. I don't use flea products all year just in the summer months. And rest of the year use Diatomaceous Earth. You can put it directly on the dog to kill fleas or spray it around the house or yard. No chemicals. Guest sriddle13
I have a question for any of you that have been having problems with fleas and Frontline or Advantage didn't seem to take care of the problem. Were you applying them every month religiously? Or were you just treating when you had a problem? I am just trying to find out to compare to my own experiences and those of my clients. tydyelady
Another satisfied Comfortis user here. Opie had a very bad flea infestation that had probably been going on for months until we finally recognized it for what it was. It was winter, so I didn't think fleas, until I started getting bit. We thing he picked them up in boarding last October. Anyways, the Comfortis is wonderful. Killed the fleas, its been about 3 months now, and no problems. Our vet highly recommended it. To be sure, we broke up the dose, half at night with dinner, and half in the AM with Breakie, to make sure no stomach problems. Oh, and no, it does not kill ticks, only fleas. I recommend you try it. I paid $80 at the vets, for 6 tabs (6 months), but have seen it cheaper online.
