Guest missecho
Since we've had Molly we've taken her to the vet twice. The first time, days after she joined us, was for a checkup, at which visit she was declared totally healthy. The vet fees for that visit were in excess of $250. Two or three weeks later, my husband brought Molly to the vet because she was acting lethargic and staying in bed all day while I was away on a business trip. The fees for that visit were in excess of $500, including x-rays. Just yesterday we brought a urine sample to the vet and asked for an analysis. The fee for that was $50. Haven't heard the results of that test yet. Do these fees sound in line with what is normally charged? I must say that I haven't had a dog for a few years, but these fees seem really high to me. Guest eaglflyt
If they did full lab work, heartworm and tick disease check, and full exam ... that first price of $250 sounds reasonable. The others sound high to me, depending on what they included.
Guest BlackandBrindle
Those sound on the high end to me. On the well visit check, what did they do? Did they do bloodwork? Heartworm tests? The vet we've been using charges less than the vet before, but it does add up quickly. For instance, we did a liver panel and valley fever test yesterday and that came to $170. This included a $15 osha fee and no vet visit charge... Exrays, depending on how many and where you take them can also be expensive.
turbotaina
I think it probably depends on where you live and what all you're getting. In the DC region, yeah, sounds about right If you let us know your geographical region and an itemization, it would probably be easier to tell. But around here, a UA is probably about what you paid for it. Quote Meredith with Heyokha (HUS Me Teddy) and Crow (Mike Milbury). Guest missecho
We live in Tucson, Arizona. Our neighborhood has many expensive homes in it, and I'm wondering if a short drive to another part of town might make some economic sense.
Guest BlackandBrindle
Ina Road Vet Hospital is on La Cholla across from the Foothills mall. They are what I consider expensive. $55ish or so for a vet visit, plus testing and whatnot. Their testing runs high. We are actually moving vet to Tanque Verde Pet Hospital on Tanque Verde, near Tanque Verde and Grant I believe (I am not as familiar with the east side so that could be totally off). Even though we live in the NW near Saddlebrooke, I just don't like the vet we're using and I'm tired of having to find new vets. At this point I don't even know what the charges at Tanque Verde are, but I know they are super trustworthy and the vet is a very good vet. What group did you adopt from? I know with AGR they provided a list of vets that their adopters use and recommend. That's not a guarantee, but it's certainly a place to start. Guest FLT
I live in Laurel, MD - and those charges sound about right. Kaylee's last dental (where they pulled 16 teeth) was $983 - which included a 15% discount for being a therapy dog with Fidos for Freedom. Her last check up (including titers, pee test, "senior panel" bloodwork, Lepto vaccine, kennel cough nasal vaccine, heart worm test, and exam plus we also paid for antibiotics to take leading up to her dental) was about $430 including our 15% discount. Drake is in for surgery today and I don't even want to think about those costs yet - over 2k I would guess, now that we have added a second small mass to remove and biopsy. Guest Energy11
YES, that DOES sound very high. I have had three senior panels done of three of mine, with urinanalysis, and it was about $100 for those. Office visits are $35, rechecks, $28, and checking Curfew's phenobarbitol levels, $88. I worked for a vet for four years in Florida, and he is about the same as the one here. MIGHT be time to find another vet? Good Luck!
Jiffer
Vet fees are not standardized so depending on where your vet is located will depend on the price. In our area, if you have a country vet (not in any townships), it is likely to be much much cheaper than if you go with an in-city vet. You pay for the added convenience. Vet visits with our in-city vet are up to $55/dog, with $45 for revisits (Canadian funds). My last visit with them was for Uber and Atlas and we paid $360 for dewormer for Uber; examination, Heartgard and shots for Atlas. He's a sweetie and does give us price breaks where he can. Hubcitypam
Vets can vary widely even in the same city. The one vet I went to was $65 for an office call and DHPP, lepto and rabies was $80 plus office call totaling $145 Vet #2 is $38 for office call Vet #3 runs a shot clinic 3 times a week and DHLPP and rabies is $18, HW test is $20 All 3 are within 15 miles of each other in Dallas

Guest Flysmom
I think it depends on the vet and what they did. We lived in CO and the vet was pretty good in price, the one in TX was pretty expensive, the first vet I saw here in LA was crazy expensive and he the vet we see here in town now - is very reasonable in price, so is the specialist in Lake Charles. Guest sheila
like folks have said, it all depends on location. I live in the Midwest and I once adopted a dog from the East coast. In lieu of an adoption fee I offered to have the dog vetted here. She needed a dental and a lump removed. It would have cost the group $650 for the dental alone on the East Coast. I was able to have both procedures done here for $190.
Anne
I live about 100 miles south east of Tucson and vets out here are not only few and far between, but VERY pricey compared to what I was used to in Cincinnati, Ohio. I really don't have a choice and use the one who is convenient and who will work with me concerning meds and shots and such.
Guest how888
Just brought Nike in for his check up and one shot. $165. Dental.. $500 to get them cleaned.. Mine don't even cost that much.. Guest SoulsMom
Archie just went in for his annual exam, rabies shot, blood tests, and urinalysis. Fee was $236.00. They also asked me to bring a stool sample in, for an additional fee of $53 (I passed on that one, pending the results of the other tests) We're in central MA
Guest kydie
Just a little info here, the new proceedure that is one for teeth cleaning, the dogs don't have to go under, check out Houndstooth web sight, our rescue group is going to do this in the fall for $150.00 just a suggestion here, maybe one these clinics is close to someone
Guest Cris_M
The most any of us can do is guess if the fees are fair. We know what we pay, but it's hard to know what a certain area charges if one doesn't live there. That being said, why not call local vets and find out what they charge? I wouldn't go through the whole list of stuff. That would tip them off that you are comparing two vets, and they could be uncomfortable about it. Just choose some normal items -- tooth cleaning, tick titres, shots. Around here some vets charge 40% less than others.
mom2four
I can tell you that up here in Calgary the vet fees are outrageous, but everyone charges a lot. You can't really vet shop a lot. A dental, under anaesthesia will cost for $700 to $1000, depending what needs to be done. A regular vet visit is about $70 just to walk in the door. We took Jamey to the specialist vet here yesterday, they do charge more than a regular vet, but the estimate for a bone biopsy under anaesthsia was about $1300. Thank doG for pet insurance! brandimom
Sounds excessive - $250 for a check up and $500 for x-ray +. I just changed vets and found quite a difference in their exam charges. Perhaps check with your friends and see who they use as a vet and what they charge and of course if they are signthound savvy. If they are not sighthound savvy maybe they are open to learning.
