Glucosamine Article

My boy wouldn't be walking if it wasn't for his glucosamine. Liquid Health = liquid gold. He was getting so bad from an old track injury that he shook violently when he stood and now he runs with his younger brother again (something his pain pills could never make him feel well enough to do).

Is liquid health a product? Where do you get it. My girl's back legs shake when she has been running around in the back yard. I have been using the glucosamine from Claudia at the Greyhound Gany for about 4 months. Thanks.

I give my grey the K-9 Liquid Health and have recommended to several people--all of whom swear by it now. Two teaspoons in the morning, two at night, and my finicky boy loves the taste (smells like shellfish, so I'm assuming that's the taste as well). It takes about a month to start working because it has to build up, but for my boy it's like night and day.

When the big human study came out saying it didn't work a couple years ago, I went through it and couldn't find any information on what brand they used. Given that glucosamine is not regulated, and that very few manufacturers pay to have outside testing done to prove that the product is what it says it is, in the dose it is, I took the study with a grain of salt.

 

Obviously ancedotal, but I really think cosequine helped Patrick delay the need for arthritis meds for several years, and despite the cost I still keep him on the full dose even with his medication.

It works for our "kids" so phooey on any studies. Without glucosamine in Atlas' system, he couldn't walk very well on that hock of his.

 

I have noticed that there is a difference between Glucosamine HCL and Glucosamine Sulfate. The HCL works much better in canines. You have to give more of the Sulfate to get the same result.

From what I understand, it depends on the degree of joint degeneration. I read a very good article in Gun Dog magazine.

 

I saw that it helped my dog AT FIRST, but once his leg got really bad it didn't help.

 

I have arthritis, and asked TWO specialists about using it myself, and they both told me not to waste my money (this is for ME, not my dog). When you have a bone on bone situation, no amount of nutritional supplement is going to grow back what is gone.

This is an email I just got from the DVM,, MS, DACVN, Associate Professor of Nutrition at UPENN regarding glucosomine.

I had asked if Beau could go back on it. Her short answer: NO.

 

These are her thoughts about it.

 

"Glucosamine has no know preventative

effects and only minimal evidence for beneficial effects for treating

arthritis in dogs. Also there are major issues about source and

processing re whether the patient absorbs it from the gut at all

(nevermind the effect it might have on Beau's gut)."

I've seen such *drastic* improvement in my 10 year old severely arthritic greyhound (from only going on ten minute walks to almost 2 hour walks) that I just can't believe it. Maybe it's the type of injury? He had two breaks from a track injury...not necessarily joint.

To play devil's advocate, human parents experience the placebo effect--they're told their child is given medication, they rate their child as improving, it's possible that's some of what's going on too.

 

That said, in response to the UPENN professor, I completely agree that there are major issues with the quality of the product, and source really does matter.

Exactly so. Which is what the studies say -- it does just about as well as a placebo in most groups of patients.

 

IIRC, a lot of if not all of the discredited earlier studies reporting positive benefits were paid for by a manufacturer of, guess what, glucosamine supplements. Hmm.
