Blackberry Update

After two months and two different vets, Blackberry might be on the way to a diagnosis. We drove an hour to the doctor our greyhound adoption lady uses. Our pup spent two nights getting fluids to try and get her kidneys back to par. The doctor is looking into TBD. If not that, we have Toxo to look into. She is on two perscriptions; Doxycycline 100mg andTrimethoprim Sulfa 960. She is eating and drinking well, the fever is gone, but her tummy feels swollen. Is this something I should be worried about? I've read up on bloat, but she doesn't seem to be in any pain.

How have her blood values been? Anything out of the ordinary?

Yes, I would be concerned about swollen tummy. Not about bloat so much as about spleen and liver issues.

Has she had the tick testing yet? IIRC the doxycycline is usually dosed a good bit higher, and for an extended period, for TBD. Hopefully someone more knowledgeable will wander by shortly.

Liver and kidneys weren't doing so well when we took her in Wednesday. She stayed until her levels checked out okay and the fever went down.

She just went out and is peeing well, and she had a large bowel movement. I know steroids can make you swell, could that be it? The vet said to watch her closely and hopefully we will know what we are dealing with come Monday when her blood test results come back.

It is so hard to wait for test results. Lots of good thoughts and prayers for Blackberry that this is resolved and she is back to good health soon.

Yesterday they called to see if I had ever had Blackberry vaccinated for Limes Disease. Seems she came back with a borderline positive test result that can sometimes be caused by the vaccine itself. My answer was no, and then we wait for more test results.

Her stomach looks like she is ready to give birth to a litter, and she is becoming more lethargic. I can tell she isn't feeling as well as she did just from the vet. I should have written all her levels down, but most of this stuff is new to me. She has been such a healthy girl for our four years together. Please keep praying for us... :cry1

Has she had x-ray/ultrasound of her abdomen? If not, any chance of doing that today?

Vet office called this morning to let us know the doctor had called over to Auburn University about Berry's test results. They hope to have them faxed this afternoon. What a waiting game...

Do they have a treatment plan in mind for Blackberry? Is there a prognosis? Sorry, I'm not familiar with hepatozoon.

According to this link, there is a new drug being used that seems promising! Don't give up yet! Is your vet willing to do anything for her immediate comfort?

This is what I found:

"There is no effective treatment or vaccine for this disease. Certain drugs such as imidocarb in combination with other drugs have sometimes been successful in lowering the number of organisms in an animal. Using supportive care, such as aspirin, some cases will respond, but they will not be cured."

Also, it is looking like her liver is going. I don't know how much longer she will be with us.

Beth, I am so sorry. Please keep us posted on her condition and what your vet will be doing now that you have a definitive diagnosis.
