Guest HornGreys
We have a foster that came in a 8.5 year old brood. All went well with her spay and dental. She had staining on her face before her dental which could have been from drooling. She had bad teeth but after a good cleaning she needed no extractions. She was put on a 10 day cycle of Amoxicillin because her mouth was so bad. Here is the issue we are seeing now. She is constantly drooling. The drool comes as stringers all the way to the ground. Her water bowl is filling up with stringer/goober and has to be rinsed out after almost each time she drinks. My foster mom says that it is like living with a Blood Hound or Saint Bernard. She says it reminds her of Turner & Hooch. So, here is our question....has anyone had this experience. If you have seen this what is the outcome. Does anyone have any sugestions on what is going on or what to do with her. Thanks in advance from a sweet brood mom and her foster mom. Guest GiJenn51
I haven't seen that. But I'll be sending my good thoughts for her!
Guest StriderDog
How long has she been drooling? If its only the first or second day after a spay, it's probably mouth pain that's keeping her from swallowing the drool... but if it's been a couple of days, I'd begin to worry that the dental hit a nerve or something and I'd call the vet. Guest HornGreys
Thanks. We haven't seen it before so that is why we are concerned. I hope that someone has an idea of what is going on. Our vet has no idea either and he has been working with greyhounds for a long time. We posted at the same time. She was spayed on Tuesday afternoon. We will talk to the vet again about the idea of hitting a nerve. Thanks Edited July 26, 2008 by HornGreys

Guest greydogluvr
Do you think she could possible have a sore throat from the surgery. Do they use breathing tubes or any other of the such during surgery? Her jaw may be sore as well. I know when I come from a long dental procedure my jaw is really sore. Just thinking out loud. Hope you can get to the bottom of this soon.
Guest HornGreys
Yes she is still on the antibiotics. They do use a breathing tube. She is not having any problems eating or drinking so I don't believe that her throat is sore. She is a very happy girl that wants a lot of attention it is just hard when she is constantly drooling and shaking it all over the place. She doesn't mind her face being washed off, thank goodness. Our concern is that she will be traveling to her new adoption group and posible forever home on Friday so we want to make sure that she is ok before she goes. Thanks for the ideas, keep them coming that way we have it all to ask the vet.
Burpdog
I've heard of drooling with a bad tooth or teeth. Is it possible they left a bad one behind? I don't know of anyone that uses amoxicillan for mouth infection. Either clavamox or clindamyacin (Antirobe). Could be a bad infection because she is not on the right atb. Batmom
Bloody drool or clear drool? Has vet actually seen her, or just consulting by phone? I would want her mouth looked at again ASAP -- could be bad tooth, blocked salivary gland, debris stuck in a gum pocket, etc. As a longshot, might be worth switching the antibiotic and following this procedure: give 10mg pepcid, wait 30 min., give meal or large snack, give antibiotic. Good luck! Guest HornGreys
It is clear drool. No blood in it. She has started shaking so we called the vet and have her on some pain meds. We were told that she started the drooling during her dental, so it defanitly has something to do with the dental. We are watching her and if it does not improve soon we will be back at the vet. Batmom
If she's shaking with pain several days after dental and spay, something is very very wrong. I'd get her seen ASAP, like in the next half hour ...... With pain so bad it's making her shake days later, I'd suspect a bad infection, which could be immediately life-threatening. I don't know of anyone that uses amoxicillan for mouth infection. Either clavamox or clindamyacin (Antirobe). Could be a bad infection because she is not on the right atb. That's what I was thinking. Maybe a bad one still there? My vet dental specialist and my regular vet always uses Anitrobe. It always did the trick. Nothing else would clear up any infection, or prevent any infection after a dental. It is clear drool. No blood in it. She has started shaking so we called the vet and have her on some pain meds. Guest HornGreys
Well, we have spokent to the vet and put her on some pain meds. That seems to be what the problem was. Her mouth was sore. After having two doses of pain meds the drool has stopped. We will bring her in to make sure that nothing was left behind in her mouth. Thanks for all the support and ideas! LaFlaca
Antibiotics can cause excessive drooling in dogs. The same thing happened to my son's APBT. If you go online and reserach the antibio. it will most likely list drooling as a side effect. Hope everything resolves itself soon. Guest HornGreys
She is doing much better. The problem was that she never acted like she didn't feel good except for the drooling and then some panting. She is eating and drinking fine and roaching on a bed. Thanks again for everything!

Guest LadyChester
Was she on a fentanyl patch or fentanyl at any point? My guys have never done well with that drug and drooling, panting, pacing are just a few of the things that happen.
