Guest KateWantsaGrey
I know it's normal for greys to have some diarrhea when they first come home, but how long does it normally last? We've only had our boy for 2 days now and since he has been home he has only been eating chicken & rice. I'd say he gets about a cup and a half in the morning and another at night. I just gave him a pepto since we are about to go on a car ride and I dont want his stomach to get more upset. Is there anything else I could be doing for him? If his diarrhea doesn't subside by tomorrow do you think I should fast him for a day? We are about to go to a meet & greet at a park near our house, so I'll get to talk with some people from my group and see what they say too. Thanks for the help! Fiona3
Do you know what kind of food he was eating before he came to you? You could start gradually adding some of the kibble to his diet. Making the adjustment to a new home and experiences could be affecting him. You could try calling your adoption group for some ideas and suggestions. They are always willing to help new adopters. zimsmom
Zim had diarrhea for quite awhile due to nerves when she first came home. I agree with adding a little kibble to his regimen. Pumpkin right from the can like a tablespoon & some white rice should help. Edited June 2, 2008 by zimsmom

6greyhounds
Never had the big D with any of mine when I first adopted them and one was right out of the racing kennel just started giving my food and not problem. When they do get the D now that I have had them a few years I ususally make them chicken and rice. I have been told to give pumpkin but mine will not touch it. I do give them plain or vanilla yogurt also for the gas Quote It is better to have loved and lostThan never to have loved at allMissing my Big Blue eyed Bear
Guest Greyt_dog_lover
I have had my guy for 3 months now. He was in foster for 8 months before I got him. He was fed manily Evo & later Euchanuba. When I got him the gas was HORIBLE so I took him off the Euch and put him back on the Evo. He had "d" for the entire time i have had him. I took him to the vet after 1.5 months when i saw some bright blood in his stool. I was told the "frank" blood (bright red) was not a serious issue. The vet thought my guy had colitis from the constant diareha. He gave me a round of antibiotics and something to firm up the stool. Think it worked? NOPE. So now for the last 3 weeks i have been trying different things. Limiting what he eats (he has NEVER been allowed "people" food) He only gets dog food, fruits & veggies (raw). I took my cats to the vet and explained my situation with my dog and the vet said to try fiber. So we got some generic "metamucil". Bart has been on 1 rounded teaspoon in 8 oz. of water, with his dinner. I also chop up 1 small apple and put it in his dinner. For the last 3 days he has had pretty firm stool. Another issue we were having with our guy in the last 3 weeks has also been where he has a few bowel movements in a day, one or two may be firm, but the more he goes, the looser the stool gets. I know i am rambling, and really havent given you a magic bullet, but it would appear that a LOT of people have this issue with greys and each seems to be different. I personally would think it may take up to a month before your grey psycologically settles into the new environment. Hope this helps. Guest argolola
We had to give Lola canned pumpkin for quite some time. Now she has a tummy of steel. Congratulations on your new baby.
greg1229
I've had some fosters through here with the Big D. Some had it a few days, some a week or two. Each dog is different Quote Isis, Always in my Heart Bijou, My Sweetest Angel
Guest jupiterooos
I have heard near-miraculous results reported by users of Tripett canned food. Worth a try. Jupiter's Big D never stopped, so we put him on raw. Much better now.
