jenn8
Heather, I know exactly how you feel. The news is very hard to take. I cried all night when I first found out Onyx had it. But the progression is so slow that your dog just becomes used to it and learns to adapt just fine. I forget exactly when he was diagnosed but he must have had it way before that because I noticed the unusual reflectiveness in his eyes the day I adopted him... over 6 years ago! Now, of course, it is very obvious as he has lost a good part of his sight. He still does everything he used to do (except fetch, lol) and it doesn't seem to bother him one bit. I don't think there is anything you can do to stop it, regardless of when you catch it though. Now, this is very important. If you think Hanna's central vision is affected more than her peripheral vision and she still seems to see okay at night, it is possible that she may have another type of PRA that could benefit greatly with the supplementation of vitamin E. I won't go into details unless you think it is possible because it is much less common for dogs to have this form of the disease. I give Onyx the PreserVision supplement as well. Also, if your specialist prescribes eye drops, you can usually get them for half the price at most pharmacies rather than directly from the vet. One type called Voltaren is very, very expensive but it does last quite a while. Try not to worry about Hanna. She will do just fine. She has you and your hubby, plus all her brothers and sisters to help her out. It may still be a very long time off but you will be amazed at how well she handles it. Guest tammymacb
Jeeze, Heather, I just saw this. I'm so sorry about Hanna's diagnosis, but I know that if anyone can work through it in stride it will be you and Ken. Give her an extra hug from me. Remolacha
I am so sorry, but as others have said, this is much harder on you than Hanna, she will adjust just fine.

montgomery2524
Heather so sorry to hear about Hannah's diagnosis. Mecki's boy Sully has it too. My Smokey (Sully's brother) also has PRA and he does very well. I even forget that he is blind. He is the only dog we have that hasn't stepped on poop in the backyard. Humans included. His bionic nose picks up the scent and he sidesteps away from it. Guest KennelMom
Thanks for all the replies everyone...It's great to have such a wonderful support system here jenn8 - thanks for the info. I'd say her vision appears to be lost equally (peripheral and central). We can't get in to see the opthamolgist until NEXT Wed so I'm guessing we'll have more info them since they have all the fancy doo-dads to assess the eye. I told them to plan for the doc to spend some time with me b/c I have LOTS of questions.
Guest hannahmom
I'm sorry to hear the bad news about Hanna's eyes, but she is in a secure loving home with parents who will do everything they can to make the disease progress as easy as possible. This will make things so much easier for her She's a beautiful girl.
krissn333
Sorry to hear that Heather...it stinks but some of the posts here are encouraging. Tomorrow when I have more time I'd like to read more about it because I've always thought Ace's eyes photographed strangely compared to the others here. I always just shrugged it off since she seems to see just fine and since she will be just 7 in February, but if your Hanna girl is the same age I guess the problem really doesn't require a dog to be older. So, thank you for posting, you may have just helped several of us catch this in our dogs as well, so we can begin treatment if needed. Hugs to you and your pack I'm sure Hanna will do just fine and hopefully things will progress slowly. My grandma had macular degeneration, is this kind of the same thing? She took the Ocuvite stuff too.
