Guest longdogs
William is going back to the specialist tomorrow. He's been up and down since his illness, mostly OK, sometimes playful, but not quite the dog he was before. He put back most of his lost condition and recovered to be a couple of kilos lighter than before, and down in muscle and energy, but you'd have to know him well to notice. I started to note warning signs last week. A loss of appetite, not wanting to walk and just not looking right. He was reasonable yesterday morning, eating a reasonable breakfast and taking a walk, but last night he kept coming to tell us something was wrong. He couldn't lift or shake his head, his tail was sad and he appeared uncoordinated. These signs are all too familiar, identical to the early symptoms of polyarthritis he had before. Last time we took him to our vet and the initial treatment didn't help. Despite several more trips to the vet he went rapidly downhill and ended up in a terrible state, eventually landing in intensive care followed by a long slow recovery. His decline was frighteningly rapid. We hope to cut-out the middle part this time and are taking him straight to the specialist who helped him before. Meanwhile I put him back on his previous medication of Macrolone and Meloxicam. He's a much happier dog tonight and can lift his head again. The poor fellow had a really tough time before and really doesn't need a repeat experience. Keep your fingers crossed for him.

Guest longdogs
Thanks for the kind thoughts. First thing to say is he is responding well to the drugs and is much more comfortable and cheerful. It was about a year since he last saw the specialist but some of the staff were the same and remembered the poor creature I brought in last time. On that occasion he couldn't stand, could barely breathe and his heart was wild. This time was much better as he was on his own four paws, mobile, and happily making friends with all the dogs and people. It was funny when he went on the scales. My fears about his weight loss were confirmed when he weighed-in at a shade over 29kg, down from his usual shade under 33kg. The receptionist who recorded his weight ready for the vet tech told me he'd put on weight! The last time he was weighed there his bones were practically rattling. My concern was confirmed. Although all the tests won't be back for a few days, the initial diagnosis is inflammatory joint disease as before. We've caught it much earlier this time and the pred seems to help him a lot. Amongst other things it stimulates his appetite, so we should start to get some condition back on him. Of course we also have to put up with a starving hound with a terrible case of the munchies... Unlike last time, his general condition is good and his heart normal. He was absolutely great at the hospital and made a lot of friends. The vet was able to give him a really thorough examination, flexing and feeling all his joints and obviously moving him into uncomfortable positions, standing and lying. He was very trusting and cooperative the whole time. Then he was taken away to have some tests done while I waited and was apparently very well-behaved when they had to drop everything to deal with a difficult dog. By the end of a long morning he was soaking up a lot of attention. That, plus the car rides which he adores, meant he had a pretty good time. I feel much happier knowing he's been properly examined and the specialist is back on his case. I'm also very proud of my gentle, trusting hound, and know he will get the very best of care because of it.
Fiona3
That is such great news about William. It sounds like he has a wonderful specialist and great care. William also sounds like a loving, sweet dog and you should definitely be proud of your boy. Our Hobbes has been on Prednisone (for a tumor) for 2-1/2 months and has turned into a "Land Shark" with food. I have ended up feeding him 3 full meals a day, plus snacks, snacks, snacks. He has gained back a great deal of weight and is feeling pretty good at the moment. It seems a fair trade to keep him happy and content (as long as the food keeps coming!!!!) Best wishes to your family & William and please keep us informed on his progress.
