Blitz, Saturday Afternoon

Recommended Posts

I called for an update and talked to the weekend vet. She and the doc who's been working with us talked this morning and decided that Blitz needed to hang around for another day. He is eating better, but still needs to be syringe fed occasionally to get him going. He is off his IV fluids, though still has a catheter in, and is also getting oral medications. However, he has watery diarrhea, so they want to keep him there to keep an eye on that and also be absolutely sure his oral medications work and stay down. I am supposed to call tomorrow around noon and see if he can come home tomorrow.

I did leave Brian with his parents at our house and went to visit Blitz by myself for a little bit (they have limited visiting hours on weekends). The tech who brought him said he had just finished eating and that maybe we should do our visit outside and enjoy the weather. So I took him out and he urinated and we walked around for a few minutes, then went back to the room and sat down together. I didn't stay very long, maybe 25 minutes total, and he stayed "sitting up" the whole time instead of laying all the way down on his side as he has for most of our visits. He was very focused on the waiting room area - maybe looking to see if Brian was coming?

So, bummed that he can't come home today, but I'm glad they are willing to make sure he is as well as possible before sending him home. Lord knows I would've worried about the diarrhea. So my plan is now that the inlaws have left, I'm going to go grab a nap soon, and then I need to get to work on school stuff so that if he does come home tomorrow, I can focus on him.

Well, drat that he can't come home yet. But it sounds like he is getting excellent care. Hope the diarrhea resolves and he'll be back with you in a day or two.

No, he is at Dogs and Cats Veterinary Referral, right at the end of our street.

He sounds like he's at a good vet, it's great that they want to make sure he's totally stable before sending him home.

Do they know what is causing the diarrhea? Do they suspect an infection or parasites or anything?

They didn't say. He was on a broad spectrum antibiotic while on IV fluids, and I didn't ask if they're continuing an oral form of antibiotics. I wouldn't be surprised if the diarrhea is simply because he's getting used to food again - his intestinal tract is/was full of gas, and at least some of the food he's gotten has been fed to him through a syringe - not exactly solid stuff to begin with. I also didn't think to clarify if he actually has diarrhea or simply very loose stool - though since it was a vet I was speaking to, I would hope she would use the correct terminology. On the other hand, it didn't look like Blitz had gotten a bath recently, as in he messed himself because he couldn't get outside fast enough. I can't imagine that his cage is big enough for him to keep himself clean if he did have the Big D.

*thinking* ... The vet we've been working with mentioned that she was going to test for giardia when we first saw her. I'm assuming since it hasn't been mentioned since, that giardia has been ruled out.

*yawn* Time to head back to bed. G'night all. Thanks for all your thoughts and prayers.
