Blood In Urine...

Well More drama, but this time its my betsy girl. about 3 months ago, we couldnt seem to keep the weight on her, everything we tried, and she kept losing weight. then she just lost her pep. wasnt the same lovable girl. she just acted as if she was in a funk..so we took her to the vet, and after some blood testing, they came back saying it was her thyroid (spelling) so they gave us some meds, and she slowly started getting better, back to her normal self, and was gaining her weight again.....Well i've seen here in the last few days she's been losing her weight again, and lost a lil pep in her step. so i called the vet, he said start her on her meds again, if no change, bring her in. "but we'll be gone for the weekend".......So yesterday after putting away some stuff i got from the market i ran down to the bus-stop to pick up my son, and when we got home I found that both dogs had gotten into a bag of red onions. only one was eatting (with what i thought most of what in lil pieces all over the floor) and the others just had bite marks in them. well i figured one of them would have an upset tummy, or THE BIG D!!!. told Dh to pick up some plain yogurt on his way home from work. this morning Dh came in from their morning walk, and said her urine had a redish color to it. i asked if it was red, purpleish, or darkish more like blood?..he said "well i really couldnt tell but it wasnt yellow." so i said well we'll keep an eye on it, i'm not sure if them eatting the onions would have anything todo with it.

......So this evening i came home, and i always leave a folded towel next to the door, just in case i dont make it home in time. well i had found a very dark urine stain on it, so i got some toilet paper padded the spot, and yes i could tell it was blood. it was a brownish color, and smelled of a rusty smell...... btw...no one had THE BIG D!!, and the other dog is fine.

 

Soooooo If anyone could give me a heads up on what they think might be going on, so i'll know what to think before i go run her to the vet./hospital tomorrow morning.

Sounds like a UTI to me and definately requires a trip to the Vet.

Onions and garlic are other dangerous food ingredients that cause sickness in dogs, cats and also livestock. Onions and garlic contain the toxic ingredient thiosulphate. Onions are more of a danger.

 

Pets affected by onion toxicity will develop haemolytic anaemia, where the pet's red blood cells burst while circulating in its body.

 

At first, pets affected by onion poisoning show gastroenteritis with vomiting and diarrhoea. They will show no interest in food and will be dull and weak. The red pigment from the burst blood cells appears in an affected animal's urine and it becomes breathless. The breathlessness occurs because the red blood cells that carry oxygen through the body are reduced in number.

 

The poisoning occurs a few days after the pet has eaten the onion. All forms of onion can be a problem including dehydrated onions, raw onions, cooked onions and table scraps containing cooked onions and/or garlic. Left over pizza, Chinese dishes and commercial baby food containing onion, sometimes fed as a supplement to young pets, can cause illness.

 

Onion poisoning can occur with a single ingestion of large quantities or with repeated meals containing small amounts of onion. A single meal of 600 to 800 grams of raw onion can be dangerous whereas a ten-kilogram dog, fed 150 grams of onion for several days, is also likely to develop anaemia. The condition improves once the dog is prevented from eating any further onion

 

While garlic also contains the toxic ingredient thiosulphate, it seems that garlic is less toxic and large amounts would need to be eaten to cause illness.

Well thankyou so much for the info, we've made an apt, and are taking her in first thing in the morning. funny how i knew about the food dangers, but i had never heard about the onions, and garlic. I always stick those things in the klitchen closet, in their own baskits, and the only reason they were left out on the kitchen table was because i was running late to get to the bus..I guess i never thought a dog would like a raw onion but i guess i was wrong....

Don't rule out plain old urinary tract infection, tho. Just went thru this with Zema. She was behaving oddly for a couple days and it turned out to be a UTI.

Well thankyou so much for the info, we've made an apt, and are taking her in first thing in the morning. funny how i knew about the food dangers, but i had never heard about the onions, and garlic. That was my first thought except a little thing in the back of my brain was saying a "caution". Hope it is simple like a plain old UTI.

Is cephalexen the med given for UTI infections or something else?

I am having issues this weekend with Gypsy, too, and want to avoid the e-vet, if at all possible.

I would definitely take in a urine sample ASAP and I do plan to for my girl's sake, also.

I am giving cranberry gel caps, too, which I believe can help, given after food because of the acidity.

Gypsy has kidney issues, though, and that is hopefully not what your pup is going through!
