  1. I'm calling her back to talk about these options, thank you.
  2. Are you only feeding her the canned rabbit? No kibble? We start 20mg of pred tonight. Man I hope this helps and doesn't hurt.
  3. yes, it's ondansetron, thank you for jogging my memory on that one. I've already told Salem she's the reason I'm not getting a new couch this year, so we would be happy to buy a prescription food if it helped her out. I was confused when we were given a script for D/D since that is just hypoallergenic as I read it. My husband has been pushing pred and I've been pushing back. I need to talk to the specialist again. Thank you for your insight.
  4. Salem is 11 years old. In July we determined that she has intestinal disease due to low folate and B12. Her symptoms over the month have been diarrhea, and discomfort that leads to her not wanting to eat. We have gone back and forth a bit with the specialist in terms of treatment and so far I haven't gotten her out of the cycle of good day and then a bad day. Her treatment right now is, probiotic (vetriscience BD), anti-nausea med (begins with an "o"), metronidazole, prilosec and she eats four meals a day of chicken, mashed potatoes and a canned prescription d/d food. I have been on this course since only Saturday and Monday morning was no good. I was hoping when previous efforts didn't work it was because I tried to get kibble into her too soon or fed her too large meals. We're not 100% sure she has IBD but are moving forward with the idea that there is at least IBS. Because of that I am thinking feeding smaller meals is better. I have also read about prednisone to help but I'm terrified of pred because I watched is steal all body mass from her littermate. From that experience I think of pred as an end of life drug. I don't know, but I just wonder if anyone has any ideas on how to get her past this initial hurdle and get her digestive system back to some sort of new normal. She's lost 8 pounds in a month.
  5. Neither of my girls are comfortable around kids, or really any new people. When we have visitors they haven't already met, especially kids, I block the girls with a gate and they have their safe space away from the kids. When one of the girls is comfortable she may go up to the gate and we'll let the kid be sniffed etc. So yeah, I don't ever make them interact unless it is on their terms, particularly on their bed. They are both good girls who have the flight instinct in uncomfortable situations. You can see the whites of their eyes when newbies enter. Even on walks they will hide behind me to not meet young folks. They sound a lot like your Grace when she bolted out the door. Given time and good introductions there are a few kids who the girls won't run from in our house. I am always vigilant that a kid get no where near them if they are on a dog bed.
  6. OMG should I call you Jenny McCarthy? Just do it.
  7. I would get the nasal deal today. I prefer preventative vaccination when you know you are going into a house with some sort of exposure. Why take the risk of your dog getting sick?
  8. I've always heard they hardly miss the outside toes. Those are more for stability than support. Inu lost one of his inside toes. I sometimes still wonder if that was the right decision. I seem to have blocked out the details of how long it took, but I have this definite memory that it seemed to take a long time for him to recover. We also have a whole lot of stairs to navigate. Overtime it looked like his outside toe ended up taking on some of the weight. I say I still wonder if I made the right decision but I can also say he never had pain in that area again. So in the end mission accomplished. eta: I talked to Dr. Radcliffe about amputating an outside toe because of the corn. He said basically "get rid of the toe"
  9. I would encourage you to spend some time in this forum searching bite scenarios. The dog could be on the human bed or the dog bed but they situation is basically the same. The person disturbed and startled the dog and the dog reacted. We all want our dogs to be perfect cuddle bugs, but the reality is greyhounds and their personalities are very wide ranging. I would NEVER let any of my dogs sleep in the bed with me. They are all reactive when bothered while sleeping. Other people have greyhounds who can hardly live without being in contact with their human being. No matter what I would give the dog space of it's own for several weeks while it is new to your home. They say it can take up to six months for your dog's personality to develop. Can someone post the Gilley article?
  10. Just agreeing with the ideas to give your dog a spot to lay in the kitchen that is out of the way, but with you. I've only lived with dogs who have sleep startle issues (good home to mange it). My momma's boy loved to be in the kitchen with me, so he had a rug to lay on to be out of the way. Granted I never spent enough time in there for him to fall asleep. All of my dogs know "out" with a point and are happy to run to the next room when asked. Of course I did unintentionally teach Inu to come into the kitchen if he was somewhere else in the house when I said "oops." I said oops when I dropped food and since most of his time was spent following me in the kitchen it became a cue for him to look on the floor in the kitchen. Anyway, extra bed is always a nice thing to get the dog to go where you want.
  11. I'm sorry you got this news. We opted for prednisone and not chemo when Inu was diagnosed with lymphoma. It works fast and he felt great for a bit longer.
  12. Jeez people take a chill pill. She said her dog her home. The dog is going back to to the adoption group. I was bitten by my dog in my home and it went to the state as required for rabies purposes. They called 10 days out, I said I was fine. End of story. We don't need to freak out over this incident. Back to OP. I have a dog who was returned for serious reactivity and she's bitten many people. I have a set up and lifestyle to handle it. Today she's my snuggle bug angel. I'm sure your group can find a home similar to mine who will live happily with Faye. I understand the need to take a break from dogs for a bit.
  13. That is great news! Makes me kind of sad I was told no.
  14. Nice to see these updates. Hope he continues to improve.
  15. OSU only provides chemo for osteo. I asked when I consulted with Dr. K.
  16. I would recommend a search for lymphoma in this forum. You will probably find some experiences with it. I am commenting mostly because no one else has yet. I chose not to go the route of chemo and went with steroid treatment. We got some extra time and made the most of it. It was a choice we made based on our thoughts on chemo efficacy for prolonging quality of life. This is a terrible situation to be in, I am sorry. Again, I would highly recommend reading what others have been through.
  17. I wouldn't mess around with swollen lymph nodes. A vet appointment is in order, in my opinion.
  18. One of mine tends to lose interest in breakfast during the summer months. We add canned food and she eats it right up. It may just be something weird like that. Try something special like tripe or other organ meat, not just turkey.
  19. No worries, he wasn't say you were bashing, rather prefacing his statement. I want to commend you on being open to learning from the board while NOT letting too much information about your group out there. Thyroid and crating are two of the bigger "great debates" on this board. The group I adopted from has been maligned on this board for recommending crating. Go figure. I've been very impressed with your questions and responses. You guys will do great together by continuing to listen, research and come to your own conclusions.
  20. Use the resources listed above for the separation anxiety. The farting is probably just another manifestation of her stress. I could never take my boy into an exciting or stressful situation and not expect to smell and hear some doggie poots.
  21. I'd be pretty upset if a stranger on the internet told me to put my dog down. Not helpful.
