  1. I'm reading through this and wondering is he eating mostly soft food and leaving all the hard food? If so, could it be a toothache?
  2. Kirkland pet food is manufactured by Diamond Pet Foods, which makes Diamond Naturals.
  3. You didn't say how long you've had him and if this is new behavior. I've had mine going on 5 months. He came with hookworms and it took 4 months to get a "no ova present" report from the vet. During the time he had them, he would perpetually wake us up at 2 and 3 AM because he was starving. Since he has been declared hookworm free, that behavior has gone away to the point where I have to ask him if he wants to get up or not. Might be worth the price of the test to eliminate that possibility.
  4. If he has hookworms you need to clean up every poop every time he goes or you will never get rid of them. Hookworms live in the ground. If you have kids, don't let them walk where the dog goes with bare feet. I've read of people needing to get their yard treated to get rid of hookworms.
  5. This is from my dogs online vet records: --------------- Ova & Parasite Reporting Scheme --------------------- The number of eggs or parasites is the number on the entire slide (not per field) for each parasite reported... 1 seen = 1 egg or parasite seen on entire slide 1+ = 2-to-4 eggs or parasites (few) 2+ = 5-to-10 eggs or parasites (small) 3+ = 11-to-50 eggs or parasites (moderate) 4+ = >50 eggs or parasites (many) -------------------------------
  6. I'll repost the email my vet received from the Greyhound program at Ohio State. Might help. We have had success using monthly topical Advantage Multi, followed by within 24 hrs an appropriate dose of Drontal Plus. Not sure why it works. We used 6 greyhounds, one with >1 yr history of hooks. In several dogs it took up to 3 months for them to go negative whereas others went negative (no ova detected) sooner. At least twice over the 9 month trial, a two owners did not follow the 30 day/monthly dosing and their dogs went positive again. We hope to get this work published as we have just finished the clinical trial. The dogs will remain on the Advantage Multi without the Drontal Plus to see if we can keep them negative.
  7. Mine has received one clean fecal report but that took 4 months. My dog came from WVA. All the dogs adopted had worms. I'm taking another fecal sample in about 2-3 days. Gave him the worm treatment last weekend. If that is also negative I'm considering us past the worm issue for now and will probably get him checked quarterly for the next year. My dog's stools have not improved since getting the first "no hook worm" present. Earlier we discussed metronidazole which has been the only thing that has really worked. He is currently eating ProPlan Sensitive Stomach Salmon and Olewo Carrots. Vet should tell you the level of hookworks, ie 1+, 2+, etc up to 4+. Mine was 3+ the whole time then dropped to zero. So, we are going to reconfirm next week. Check my Poop is a Four Letter Word thread for details, but what finally (and only) worked for my boy was Advantage Multi followed within 24 hours by Drontal. I got these from the Drs Foster and Smith website because is was much cheaper than my vet. We had to break the Drontal into small doses given the day after the Advantage Multi or he would up chuck it. Panacur didn't work at all, so I'd ask them not to give you that. You are not alone, there is a ton of good info on this website. Good luck.
  8. It was a crappy attempt, I know.
  9. Maybe a little Fortiflora on your Cheerios?
  10. Metronidazole is an antibiotic that helps kill bacteria in the digestive tract. Fortifllora is a probiotic to help restore the positive bacteria. If the fecal screen is positive, your vet will probably prescribe Panacur or Drontal. (Panacur did not work at all for us, fyi. Drontal is very strong and my dog struggled to keep it down.) If the screen is negative you can rule out hookworms and parasites and proceed with trying some other solutions like an antibiotic. But dog is so new, just waiting is probably best if there are no hooks or parasites present. Good luck!
  11. If his fecal screen came back negative for hookworms/parasites, ask your vet if they would recommend putting your dog on metronidazole (flagyl) for 10-14 days. While he's on that, supplement with Fortiflora or Proviable. Keep using the O Carrots as a supplement. We did this and it worked for the most part. However, he's off the metronidazole and the the loose stool/diarrhea have returned, basically as described by everyone. I'm debating asking for another round (4th) of the metronidazole, but there are risks to his liver/organs with prolonged use, so I'm trying to give him a break. He got his first clean fecal (oxymoron) test at the end of February and I'm sending another sample next week. If that is negative and we're free of the hookworms, then I'll probably ask for another round of metronidazole. One thing I'll suggest based on my 4 months of experiences, proceed slowly. Do one thing at a time and evaluate it over a week or so. Best of luck.
  12. A question: Is this a new dog that had this since you adopted her or an established dog with a new situation? I'd suggest getting a fecal screen by your vet and also weighing her while you are there. Make sure she weighs what you expect. We adopted our boy the last week of October and he had hookworms through the end of Feb. He is still battling the loose stool to diarrhea bug. Here is some of what we've attempted: Boiled rice and chicken - not much impact at all. Pro Plan Sensitive Stomach Salmon/Rice - mild impact. Olewo Carrots - 3 TBSP per day. Moderate impact. Plain Yogurt - No impact. Metronidazole (flagyl) - 500 mg per day, positive impact. 250 mg per day, mild impact. Pumpkin - negative impact. Fortiflora - mild impact.
  13. Just an FYI from my experience, when you do your first vet visit bring a fecal sample and have it tested for hookworms, parasites etc. We got our grey in late October and he is just now free of hookworms. Sounds like you are off to a good start with an easy-going dog.
  14. We got our 3 year old male in October. There was only the weekend to get him acclimated, then off to work. We have crated him on workdays since we adopted him. We use a comfy pad, 2 blankets, a peanut butter filled kong and a treat every morning and then leave quietly without saying goodbye. This has worked fine and he doesn't soil the crate. He is usually alone 6 hours on a normal day. Today I'm working from home and he's laying in the crate with the door open. He went in there on his own. Initially I had ruled out the breed because of the alone time concern, but the agency rep we got him from told me they were gone during the day too. I'm so happy we decided to follow through. We are at the point where we'd like to leave him on his own. I'm going to start testing him 10-30 minutes at a time. Buy the biggest crate you can find. He/She needs to be able to stand, turn around and stretch out. Get a pad that fits the bottom. I was able to find much cheaper options online than in stores and the quality has been good. Congrats on your new family member.
  15. We got our boy in October. We put a big dog bed on the floor of our bedroom (upstairs) and he has slept there ever since. Sometimes he gets up at 3AM to let us know he's hungry. The Dummies book is more of a guide than a manual. It also says greyhounds never get under your feet, which is not true of mine. As for the stairs, I would throw pieces of chicken one step beyond his reach and move his legs with my hands and nudge him up. It took about 4 times and then he got it. We started the first night. In the morning, hold his collar and guide him down the steps. Momentum does the rest. Congrats on your new greyhound.
  16. Good advice. After discussing with the vet, we are going to go ahead with the Advantage Multi and the Drontal at the beginning of March and do another check around March 10th. It seemed odd that the hook worms dropped from 3+ to zero, but he was due to catch a break. He finished the metronidazole yesterday so we'll see what happens. If his stomach continues as it is, they want to do tests for EPI and IBD. Ugh
  17. I had a golden retriever who caught and killed a rabbit 10 years ago in our backyard. You would have thought he just won Olympic Gold he was so proud. He brought it to the back door and strutted around the yard for days. It's what dogs do. I certainly would not entertain the idea of putting your girl down. I feel terrible for your neighbors at the loss of their pet, but it's entirely their fault. If your dog didn't get the cat then it still had to contend with other cats, dogs, cars, foxes, raccoons, antifreeze, etc, etc... I hit one with a car 25 years ago and still feel bad about it.
  18. Fecal on my dog came back "no ova detected". This was after 2 rounds of Advantage Multi followed by Drontal within 24 hours. He has been 3+ since we adopted him in October 2017.
  19. Hi All - I thought I'd throw in an update on this because folks are always looking for hookworm remedies. The 2/10 fecal check came back with zero ova detected, so our boy is hookworm free! We gave him the Advantage Multi followed within 24 hours by the Drontal. He threw up the Drontal about 5 hours after we gave it to him. The vet said we could try to re-dose it and they were going to prescribe an anti-nausea med on top, but we said we'd wait until the next time. Drontal makes him crazy. He had a vet appointment on 2/10 for some vaccines so I just had the fecal test done to see if he had dropped into the 2+ territory and to our surprise, he came back clean. With the worms no longer stealing his nutrition, he has gained 4 lbs, up to 70. I'd like to hold him at that weight. He is finishing a 21 day course of flagyl 250mg. We have bolstered this with FortiFlora and Olewo Carrots. We had been giving him 4 cups of Pro Plan Salmon & Rice per day, but are going to reduce that to 3 1/2. We are going to split dinner into 2 servings, 1 cup at 3:30 and 1 cup around 6:30 to ease the burden on his digestion. His digestive track still has a way to go, but I feel like there is a light at the end of this tunnel.
  20. Also not what you requested, but this is what my vet received from the greyhound program at Ohio State. I will confess that he has thrown up from the Drontal twice. I'm getting a fecal analysis on 2/10. We're going to keep going with this plan and I'm going to try breaking the Drontal into small doses given throughout the day. Drontal makes my hound crazy, can't sleep, can't relax, etc. FROM OSU: We have had success using monthly topical Advantage Multi, followed by within 24 hrs an appropriate dose of Drontal Plus. Not sure why it works. We used 6 greyhounds, one with >1 yr history of hooks. In several dogs it took up to 3 months for them to go negative whereas others went negative (no ova detected) sooner. At least twice over the 9 month trial, two owners did not follow the 30 day/monthly dosing and their dogs went positive again. We hope to get this work published as we have just finished the clinical trial. The dogs will remain on the Advantage Multi without the Drontal Plus to see if we can keep them negative.
  21. I wish this were possible. They are high school sports and unfortunately they are no dogs allowed. He would probably like to show those teenage athletes what fast looks like. I'm considering a dog walker, but I don't have a lot of faith. I almost lost him last night during what I'll call "The Hidden Rabbit Fiasco."
  22. Hi All - We've had our dog 13 weeks now. When we got him, the adoption group made us promise to crate him when no one was home to ensure his safety. All family members work or go to school, so he is in the crate from 8-3 most weekdays. We're coming up on the busiest season of the year for our family, where both kids play evening sports 1 to 2 nights a week. I don't want to "recrate" him 2x in the same day. I'd like to begin to give him his freedom. He has never pooped in the house. He had a few accidents when we first got him, but he "gets it" now. I'd like to hear experiences from anyone who formerly crated their hound but now give him the run of the house. What worked, what didn't? Looking forward to the advice. Thanks!
  23. We've been through so many rounds of Panacur, Drontal, Interceptor and Advantage Multi that my head is spinning. We've had him 13 weeks and he has been positive the entire time in the 3+ range. The vet thinks the hookworms steal a lot of his protein and thus it is hard to put weight on him. My dog came from West Virginia, but reading this website, hookworms are prevalent in many new adoptees from all over. The fecal test costs me about $45 and will scan for all kinds of worms and other parasites. If you are feeding him an amount that you think should increase his weight, but isn't I'd get this check done just to rule out worms and parasites. I envy your 2 pick up per day life!
  24. We got our dog in late October and I'm feeding him the same amount of the same food + Olewo carrots. Our walk schedule is similar to yours, about 1-2 miles depending on weather. He poops 5-6 times every day, but I can't get him back to his racing weight of 71 lbs. He is consistently weighing about 66-68 lbs. You can see all ribs and hip points, etc. I can tell you that mine is very positive for hookworms, I'm hopeful that when we get these under control, some weight may go back on him. If your vet hasn't done a check for these yet, it might be worthwhile.
  25. Thanks! He is certainly unique. He has never attempted to get on any couch or bed. He doesn't roach. He has only attempted to counter surf once, which he stopped with a simple "No" from across the room. He will stand in the kitchen for an hour staring at his treat jar trying to move it with his mind. He only barks at 3AM, just to let us know he's still in the room. He is positive we have an outdoor greyhound behind the glass door. He runs 40 mph but walks approximately 0 mph. I noticed he has the same owner (Ward) as amalexia's dog. Perhaps they are distant cousins on the grumpy side.
