    Cheering for Amelia :yay

We have a young front amp girlie, Joshi, a nearly 3 year old SalukiX from Quatar.    She came to us as a tripod 18 months ago and she’s just as fast …and way more active… as her 4 legged brothers.

She has always been faster than Carmen… I am wondering if she still will be!

Excellent update! It sounds like she is doing great. Congrats on getting through the first night.

Just checked and the harness is out for delivery. It has a soft handle basically the whole length of her back if she needs assistance getting up or when she squats to potty. That said, I doubt she's going to need it for long the way things are going!

I wish there wasn’t the yelps, but not much I can do about that… I’m just going to have to be patient.

Very good start here. And her stitches and side look great as well… no change from yesterday when we picked her up.

The only time at the moment she needs a little help is getting up from the couch. I think even the beds on the floor are easier since they don’t have a pitch to them.

  3. Update: We all survived night #1! :yay

Amelia was great! She ate a FULL meal last night!
    Meds went well.
Potty breaks are going well… she does yelp when she is trying to get up. But the discharge consultation warned us of this. It is quick and that’s it.
The hubby slept downstairs with her and Carmen. He said there was some musical chairs that went on, but Amelia was able to settle in decent and slept for a good chunk of the night.

This morning she ate her full breakfast and got outside to potty on leash.

She is being such a trooper :beatheart

    ————————————————

Our neighbor also insisted we keep her minivan for a few days in case we need to rush her to the ER… she is such a sweetheart. We met her when her 2 greys were alive.

I will say again the greyhound community is so amazing… probably the best fur kids parents we’ve ever met.

@ramonaghan Will check the mail today for the harness!

  4. Minivan was a life saver. Only thing I wish we had done was put an actual bed in it and not the travel ones… didn’t have enough fluff.

I think the yelp is her being scared for one reason or another… lost a limb, confused, was in a strange place, all of the above.

Carmen seems ok… she stiffed the crap outta her when we first comae in, especially the stitched area. But then she was more concerned with dinner time which is pretty typical for her.

Just gave Amelia some chicken salad. She enjoyed that and just glad she ate something. We will need to get her meds in her this evening.

Thank you all for all the help and support!
My next goal is to get through this first night.

  5. Ok we made it home…

I built the first time seeing her as a tripod up to be so bad, that when I saw her it wasn’t bad. I didn’t freak out, cry, etc.

The tech went over all her meds, care, etc before we left.

The only thing they mentioned was she would let out a cry or yelp once in a while when she moved. They weren’t sure why as she shouldn’t be in pain.
Thought is she’s anticipating pain, scared or just very sensitive. Or just unsure of the whole situation.

Hopefully now that she’s home she will feel better about it.
    ————————————————————————————

    As for us?

I am feeling ok right now. Glad we got her and got over the initial “seeing her” part.
And glad the ride home is over. She was very uneasy and didn’t want to lay down.

I will be working from home tomorrow so I can be with her all day.

For the first couple of weeks, you might try to limit her activity.  You already understand about the stairs.  Keeping her on a leash when she goes out will keep her from "doing more than what she should be doing".

As much as I HATE them, I did use a flex lead in the BIG back yard for a week after his week at the hospital.  Controlled very carefully by me.

We were already initially told she had to be on restricted activity. And planned on continued use of her leash.
Luckily we have access in and out of the house without steps we can use.

  7. Another update: the surgeon called again.

He said she was doing great… not much bruising so far, and they already got her out to potty with minimal assistance.
She has already been not using that leg, so I am not surprised.

He said to relax this evening and that she was in good hands.

So glad everything went well. It sounds like you are very well prepared. :thumbs-up Definitely try to get some sleep tonight...you will probably have some bumpy nights ahead, but just remember it's temporary!

The harness is on its way, hopefully there Wednesday!

    Thank you so much!

Sounds like they will be giving us a helper harness, but it’s not something that we can keep on her, so the one you are sending will be great!

    :heart

  9. Update!

    Amelia is in recovery.
Surgeon said everything went well… as good as it could.

She will be there until tomorrow. They will evaluate how she is doing around lunchtime tomorrow, and will decide if she should stay or go home.

We went shopping for tasty food, pee pads, etc today.
The surgeon recommended she not do a lot of stairs while recovering, so we will take turns sleeping downstairs with her.
I also spoke to my good neighbor friend and she is loaning us her minivan to pick her up with since our vehicles are all a big jump to get into.
They also already gave us her scripts to pick up.
The hubby and I already worked out with our works a schedule so one of us is home every day for the next month.

At the moment we are as prepared as we can be.
Tonight we will relax, get some sleep and be ready for her to come home whenever that is.

That's where we landed with both of ours—Sweep because she was so stressed and wouldn't walk or eat for them (when she saw us and our car, she suddenly figured it out, lol), and Willa because she was doing so well. It'll be okay either way. What amazes me is that some go home the same day! :yikes

He was very nice about it (the surgeon) and said however it works out will be the best way for Amelia.

I do kind of feel like she is going to want to come home sooner vs later. But we will see how she is doing.

  11. We dropped her off at 8 this morning.

She was so peppy and happy. Carmen came with for support LOL

I asked about her staying an extra night. The surgeon said it’s an option, though they like to get them back into their environment they know sooner vs later, especially to encourage eating. So that is up in the air. Sounds like we will play that by ear.

Drop off was pretty stress-free. We felt good about it at least. Everyone was sweet.

We are supposed to hear how it goes post surgery. So I will let you all know!

Oh another thing to remember,  she's losing braking power, not acceleration. Just remember this when she starts running.

Oh I’m thinking of that… I’m feeling like our home is the worst for this…. Stairs everywhere and our yard is a giant hill.
Hopefully she figures out she can’t come barreling down the hill anymore.

I did have a question folks!

Anything I should be doing to prep the house?

We have gates, and things to put pills in that are tasty…. but what else?
Dumb, but I was planning to try and wash blankets and clean as well.

What Mary Pat said. You've both got this.

I'm going to send you the "sisterhood of the traveling harness"—I have your address from the holiday cards. She can comfortably wear it 24/7 and it has good juju (and fur) from all the hounds that have worn it previously. I wish I'd thought to send it yesterday when the PO was open.

Here's a video of Willa at a playdate yesterday coming in hot after the four-legged boys. Amelia will be there before you know it!

How sweet of you! Just clicked on the harness thread… thank you!

    And what a nice video.
I know she will hopefully get there. Just kind of had that moment where things hit me hard.

Thank you all again for the support. This forum has always been a great place for information, support and just general Grey love ❤️

Explain that you and your family are "VERY" anxious about her immediate care post-surgery.  Plus, bear-in-mind, they're going to make more money that way.

Taylor, WITH Amicar, developed a tremendous about of  edema and swelling 36 hours after surgery (front right leg).  His chest, all 3 legs.  So much that his pee was red.  So much that they needed to keep him for 6 nights, on an IV, to keep flushing fluids through him to reduce the risk of permanent kidney damage.

    Wow, that was a lot.
Thank you… I will try and stress this.

  15. Less than 48 hours till surgery…

I went to Petsmart today to stock up on pill pockets.
Was in the toys aisle and broke down crying. Just figured I’d share, and I knew you all would relate.

I will be going to the vet with the hubby Monday morning to drop Amelia off.
I plan on pushing for her to stay at least 2 nights.
Anything I can say to help that cause in case they don’t want to keep her?

  16. Thank you for this suggestion!
I am going to push to have her there an extra day or so if possible (I can't imagine them saying a flat out NO).

I have been thinking about that as well... what will she think when she realizes she's missing a limb.
But I swear the last 24 hours she's been like ok I'm ready, I want to get this over with and stop hurting.
    Maybe that's just me projecting.
I don't even know what day it is right now....

Just trying to keep it together.

I don’t have any specific help to add, both of my greys with osteo were not good candidates for amp. It sounds like your girl is and I am glad you are getting her in soon. There is no sound in the world so awful as a greyhound screaming from a leg broken because of osteo, I would not want you to go through that. :grouphug

That’s what it sounded like the other night when she slipped on the stairs.

  18. For some weird reason, I almost felt at peace when I heard.
I think because I knew for sure and there was a plan started.

The waiting and sort of not knowing seemed to really have me out of sorts.

I passed those links on to my husband to look at as well. I don't know if we will apply for the vaccine, but it's definitely something to look into!

  19. Well, radiology confirmed osteo. I am not surprised.
Luckily scans show right now it has not spread.

We decided to go the amp route. She is scheduled for surgery on Monday. I just think this is going to be the best option. She is young and relatively healthy.

Luckily the oncologist we already know... he treated one of our last greys. He also was just recognized with some awards last year.
He has a nice bed-side manner, but will tell it to you straight.

At this point we are just in the wait pattern... keeping her calm and pain-free as much as we can.

Of course I will keep everyone updated on how things go.
I appreciate everyone's feedback the last few days. It was encouraging and helpful, and comforting.

Too many of us have been through it, that's for sure. If you decide on amputation, be prepared to feel that same sense of helplessness and heartache and guilt for a few days...but it does get better. The first time you see them run as a tripod is the best feeling in the world.

Talk to your vet about her current pain meds (I hope you'll be talking with them soon anyway!). There's no reason to be conservative with them—get ahead of the pain as much as possible. Osteo has been described by human patients as feeling like your bone is exploding.

After the incident last night we gave her extra on the pain meds.
She got her regular dose this morning and her sedative as well.
Sadly she is so playful she loves throwing her stuffies around and pouncing on them.

I will ask about upping the medication/changing it.

  21. It amazes me how many of you have gone through this.

Last night was rough... when she crashed at the bottom of the stairs and was crying in pain my hearty just broke and I felt completely helpless.
It took her a long time to calm down (she's a drama queen on top of all this).
The ankle area is now VERY swollen, so we are hoping she didn't break it.

In the middle of the night she must have bumped her leg because she let out a yelp... I don't think I fell back asleep after that.

She seems in better spirits this morning. The husband carried her down the stairs, and she is gated in the family room instead of being allowed to roam.

    Sigh....
