  1. Evening potty break… we go out the door and Carmen stops in front of us and sees deer just on the other side of our fence.
    She takes off running.

Amelia about took my arm off lurching forwards to run!
Thank good ness for the leash!

It made me happy she still wants to be her old dog self!

  2. Ok, so LAST PILL was given this morning!
I will be interested to see her behavior after everything is out of her system.

Though she had a bit of a rough day yesterday, she seemed more like herself in the evening.
We had pizza delivered and she hopped right up to go to the door with Carmen when they ran the doorbell... that was nice to see.

Countdown is on till Tuesday's appt!

It's pretty normal for them to lay on the amp site - always gives me the heeby jeebies, but I think it's a protective behavior.  As long as the incision is holding and healing I think it's more and parent issue than a kid issue!  ;)

You'll see another big positive change in her behavior and personality coming up.  Once the pain meds are gone and she's feeling clearer.

    :thumbs-up

I will be happy at least once the staples are out. They can’t feel good. Maybe the weirdness of them is what freaks her out?

Thank you again kind words… always good to get talked off the freak out ledge :crying

Aww, I know that's hard to watch. She's still figuring so much out about this new body. Before long, she'll be doing a cute little rollover maneuver to get herself up from the "wrong" side.

Willa faceplanted this morning on our walk. It's bound to happen sometimes, but my heart still leaps into my throat when it does. I think she overdid the zoomies in the yard before we went, and she was just tired and stumbled, but of course there's no spare leg to catch herself. She recovered quicker than I did, as per usual with these dogs...

I appreciated that… and hopefully she will figure out what is going on with her new body predicament.

    Oh poor Willa! :brokenheart
I’m glad she recovered quick… I would be upset for hours I suspect while they shake it off in minutes.

  5. Another update:

Husband was on pup duty today while I went in the office.

Unfortunately it was a little bit of a rough day he reports.
Amelia laid down on one of her beds on the amp side, which is doesn’t normally do.
When she trie to get up she  had a hard time and he said she started crying for a bit. He had to go over to her and pet her until she calmed down.
Not sure if she strained a little too much, or was scared, etc.

I hate when those things happen. :(

On the good side, she finished another med today. She has just 2 pain pills left and is finished!

Woohoo! Do you know when she's starting chemo, or waiting to see at her recheck?

We meet with the oncologist Tuesday as well... after her 2 week checkup.
So I guess we will find out then.

  7. Update:

Nights are going well. She still has to get up earlier than normal to pee, but I think that's from the meds making her drink more.
Good news is her last antibiotic is tonight, and her last pain med is tomorrow morning!

Then it's through the weekend and to her appt Tuesday!

    :confetti

Just seeing this now -- sending all good thoughts to Amelia.  Go Team, go!  Extra snoot bumps for Carmen, who was our Secret Santa dog some years ago.  Hope  know she's getting in on the extra goodies, too.

Welcome and thx for the extra cheering! We can always use it.

Carmen is definitely reaping the treat benefits!

  9. Update:

Next Tuesday is Amelia's 2 week follow-up visit!
She will also be done all meds at that point.

Today we got a decent amount of snow... probably a good 6 inches.
Amelia is not a fan of snow in general. She does not like going out in it, period.
We have managed to survive going out. in fact she almost ran up the hill in the backyard to get to her poop area. I had to run top keep up!

So glad today is going well!

Also, her incision area looks perfect. Everything looks great. All swelling and even redness is completely gone.

She also seems to be sleeping better... longer periods of sleep, less restlessness.

    Go Amelia! :heart

Phantom pains are definitely a thing for some dogs.  Gabapentin seems to help with that.  Usually kick in 3-4 weeks in, I think.

Glad she continues to do well!!

    Thank you.
I just read an article saying it may surface 3-6 months post surgery.
I hope she doesn't experience this, but if so, we will help her deal with it.

My vet has stopped giving tramadol because studies have shown its doesn't do anything for dogs.

But keep that 2 week mark in your view. Then they're off all meds and become themselves again.

Tomorrow is the 1 week mark. So we made it to that.

That 2 week mark (I think ) is going to be great… follow-up, stitches out, meds done.

She seems a bit more subdued the last 36 hours… we are wondering if she isn’t hurting so much now and is finally able to relax and rest.

We also wanted to know if anyone had to deal with Phantom leg pain?
If so, what did you do for it?
I don’t think she’s experiencing this, but if she did, it would be good to know what to expect and what to do to help.

Today has been better overall for us mentally. I wouldn’t mind another day or 2 off from work, but it is what it is.

    Thanks again everyone!

Trazodone or Tramadol? Either way, yeah, that can definitely make her feel off. Sweep didn't do well with gabapentin and Willa had bouts of panting that I suspect were also related to meds. No worries; you'll find the cocktail that works for her. Progress isn't always linear, but you guys are doing great by any measure!

Trazadone. We were told we could give it "as needed".

Hopefully we don't need it anymore. Girl takes enough meds right now.

Such an off day... the hubby broke down and cried this evening... he was holding that in for a while now. I was actually glad he got it out.
I went out with my cousin today. I thought it would help but I just felt angry.

Tomorrow is another day... and probably a better one.

    Thanks for listening gang.

  13. Update:

Today started out a little rough.
Missed an appt (not important) and while I was watching Amelia, she was off… laying a bit lifeless and shaking.
I don’t know what that was… why the hubby came home she jumped up as if nothing had happened.

We did give her Tramadol overnight… she is very anxious overnight so the hubby decided to give her one to get her to sleep… and let him get some sleep.
It’s almost like it never wore off today.

Hoping it was just one of those days that she was off. They can’t all be great days I guess.

I don’t think we will do the Trazadone anymore… seems to really mess with her.

  14. Night #3 done!

The hubby stayed with the girls again.

He said it was the best night so far. She slept a lot.
She has also become efficient with getting up and down, and the yelping is almost completely gone away.

Her underside is a little saggy from the surgery/fluid? But it is minimal and doesn’t seem to be a concern.
Eating and potty breaks are still going great!

She seems very much like her old self :heart

I can’t wait till she is able to do her zoomies again with Carmen!

  15. Night #2 in the books...

The hubby stayed down with the girls again last night.

Amelia slept pretty well for a good part of the night.
She is needing to go out for potty breaks on occasion.

More poop has happened this morning which is good.
    Appetite is still very good.

She is pulling us far out in the yard which is pretty amazing. Our yard is pretty hilly and she is bounding up the hills.

The poor hubby seems to have gotten a cold or possibly the flu though. Hoping he gets through that quickly.

  16. More updates:

Her poor front paw is a little swollen, so we were instructed to use a warm compress and massage it a bit.

She pretty much eats anything you put in front of her so that’s great.

    Harness: it arrived!
Dumb question: which way does it go on? I am assuming the thicker end with the buckle is the front?
