  1. Thanks for the advice. He managed to grab a fried chicken leg and tried to swallow it whole. I have no doubt he would try to gulp the necks down too. Payton struggled with milk bones-very briefly- so I am sure it will be an experience for him. I will make sure to give it over the weekend to try to minimize any problems to when I am home. Thanks!
  2. So should I bring him to the vet and get his nails trimmed in the meantime? He literally screams the whole time so I have been trying to put it off but his nails are long. I did let him lick peanut butter off my finger tonight while I rubbed his paw. After a couple of tries, he let me touch his paw. BTW- I did try putting peanut butter on his muzzle while trimming his nail, but he won't let me.
  3. Payton will not let me cut his nails. I have a dremel tool and I have conditioned him over the past couple of months not to be scared of it. But he refuses to cut his nails. When I bring him to the vet to cut his nails, he screams like they are ripping his nails out. He growls any time I try to touch his nails. It's getting ridiculous at this point. Any suggestions?
  4. Payton and Toby both started the ProHeart a couple of months ago. Neither had any type of reaction. However, Toby has been on Heartgard his entire life and is now heartworm positive in spite of the preventative. So I am willing to try the Proheart.
  5. I have not put mine up yet, because it is Payton's first Christmas here. I am not too concerned about the tree itself (other than maybe him seeing it as indoor plumbing) but I am sure the other decorations will be too tempting to resist.
  6. He has been with us 4 months, although I just noticed it a few weeks ago. He will be curled up dead asleep when he suddenly barks. He looks totally confused! The cats are always bugging him. Maybe he is having dreams about them, poor man!
  7. I have noticed that Payton will wake up from a sleep and bark for no reason like someone is bothering him. At first, I thought it was because he could hear the cats and thought they were near him. But last night, the cats were put in the bathroom, all of the lights were out and everyone was in bed. I heard Payton bark so I went into the living room where he was sleeping and he was sitting up on his bed with a confused look on his face. I have seen him do it and he jerks awake like someone touched him and looks around himself to see who it was. It is like sleep startle but no one is there. Sometimes, it will happen several times a night. Any thoughts?
  8. Danielle, does he still cry when he is in his crate with the door closed or just if you leave him out?
  9. Thanks for the update. She looks very relaxed. Really keeping my fingers crossed for her.
  10. It's rare that the vet has called us themselves. I guess since everything was ok, he had the nurse call. If something was wrong and the nurse called, I would have serious issues. I guess it is just like the people doctor.
  11. When I first adopted Payton, I was completely caught off guard with some of the difficulties I had with him and I posted my concerns on GT. However, I was looking for solutions and reassurance that it would get better. At no time did I want permission to return him, even though a couple of people did suggest he might not be the right fit for us. He is still with us and doing great. Although I do believe there is no shame in admitting a dog is more than you can handle and returning him. If nothing else, keeping a dog you are not happy with is depriving the dog of a happy home.
  12. That is what I thought was most likely too. Especially once they actually saw that the dog was not aggressive.
  13. I can see a lot of this being a misunderstanding "The dog will be put to sleep by Monday" is not a misunderstanding. And there is the letter from the trainer who basically said the dog was not cut out to be a pet. We all disagreed with her methods. And the first trainer who poked the dog with a fake hand until the dog bit the hand. Of course, we only have the OP's side of the story, it seemed the dog had been labeled as aggressive. It is very difficult to know what actually happened but regardless I know the group has the best interests of the dogs at heart. Otherwise, they would not do it. Either way, it does not matter any longer. It seems the dog just wasn't the right fit for the OP. Hopefully, she will end up with a more experienced owner. I still feel bad for the OP. And I am super proud of all the GT'ers who jumped in to help the dog.
  14. I think I am going to start giving Payton turkey (or chicken) necks once a week to try to help his teeth. I brush his teeth every single day but his teeth still need help. Is there anything I need to watch for? Can it upset his stomach? Is once a week good? Thanks!
  15. Glad Hester is better today. He does look like he is enjoying the ride! I couldn't imagining picking up Payton - just him stepping on my foot hurts!
  16. I am not seeing how someone could misunderstand this. Seem pretty specific for a "misunderstanding". Nevertheless, I hope Ami is okay and the OP, too.
  17. Poor baby. That is pathetic. I hope they figure out what's wrong soon and he can get some relief. Does heat or ice help?
  18. Poor Henry. Hopefully today was the worst and he starts feeling better. Hugs to you, Henry and Truman.
  19. Poor man! Glad it is not serious. Hope he feels better soon.
  20. This made me so sad to read. Poor Ami must have been terrified and OP must have been heartbroken watching it. I can’t imagine what it must be like to have these issues with your dog and having no support (that matters, anyway) from your adoption group. Payton had more issues than I expected, and I don’t know what I would have done if I had not been able to call up my adoption group for help. There are so many wonderful, experienced people on GT that have helped so many times, but my adoption group knows my dog. They were invaluable to getting through the rough times. Payton is incredibly sweet and wants to please, but I can’t imagine him tolerating what that trainer put Ami through. And I am not sure if he would not bite me if I tried to take a bone away from him. He would certainly growl. And he trusts me! You did not do anything wrong, Ami_Ma. Your group failed you and Ami. They have no reason to be unhappy with you. Please don’t give up on greyhounds. Please get in touch with some of the experienced owners in Canada for help.
  21. I'm so in love with Henry! What a trooper! Truman makes my heart melt too! Thanks for keeping us updated, Alicia.
  22. You said you knew in your heart it wasn't a good fit. It is not fair to you or the dog to try to force it to work if it won't. But make sure you are not just experiencing a knee-jerk reaction. I considered returning Payton at first, but I am so glad I didn't. There is nothing wrong whatsoever in returning the dog. I know it is a difficult decision. ETA: I just realized that you have had her for 6 months. If things are getting worse, I don't know if they will get better without serious professional help. And as said, that kind of help is few and far between. Hugs to you and Ami.
