  1. Conrad was not too interested in eating day one either. Turns out the adopters added a little "stuff" to his kibble. He started chowing down as soon as we added some wet food to his Kibble. I would feed the same that he has been eating. I have to because Conrad has a 3 page list of allergies My DW thought he had been abused at some point [before the rescue group] because he was soooo laid back. Turns out that is just him. He follows me wherever I go, and won't get up in his crate UNTIL he sees or hears my wheelie chair and when we come home from church he almost jumps into by lap when my DW opens his crate. He has started playing with stuffies, and ROOS when we go outside, as soon as i give him permission Conrad only adopted me on the 5th of May so we are still getting to know each other. so relax and enjoy the experience
  2. He is turning into the most CHARMING young boy. He now started to play with a stuffy. When the squirrels get his motor running he will grab it, haul it around a little then play bows and grabs it and takes it to the tree. He usually stays on the patio, but has been to Queen's former dig/sleep hole, and dug a bit. Funny the only OTHER spot where Queen layed down, he has chosen the same spot. We live on the top of a small hill and the backyard neighbor has a steep sloped hill. The other day he had some workers out clearing the brush and hopefully ICE PLANT {terrible plant for a hill, shallow roots and gets REALLY HEAVY when it rains} when we came out I saw a shovel leaning against our wrought iron fence. Conrad promptly MARKED the shovel blade...I think he got the guy's GLOVES too.... that's a my boy
  3. email has always worked well for me. She is always busy and they do adopt lots of Greys. If you need a cat friendly they currently {at least a month ago} had a male Haggard and a female. The male wanted NOTHING to do with my wheelchair and the female, was a bit too energetic for my DW. We have three small grandchildren and she did not want to take a chance. Conrad turned out to be a perfect fit for us. The girl LOVES having her belly rubbed while roaching. it I remember correctly they were both fawn colored. If small animal or cat friendly is NOT a problem...well they have just about any color you could want, again I would suggest going down when they are open and visiting with a few. Their adoption page with the pictures says email so....
  4. Betty is hard to get on the phone, BUT if you just go on down you can visit and take as many of their beautiful boys and girls out for a walk around the compound, it keeps the dogs happy and you get to meet some pups, THE bad news is you cannot take ALL of them home. You can see a nice shot of CONRAD on their web page if they have not taken it down yet. I am sending you my phone number by direct message if you would like to call me. dan
  5. well with Queen, she only went in the crate when we left the house, she REFUSED to sleep anywhere but with me Now with CONRAD, he is not a climber, jumper and I have a raised bed for him which he can use but he is VERY happy with his crate even though 2 of the cats roam around all night. You may also find a serious foot warmer, but IF you can keep your new greyhound liking the crate so much the better
  6. He still is not clear on the concept of LOOKING UP when he trees the pretty but evil squirrel, but once up he watches and when she comes down...boom back he goes and UP she goes. eventually the squirrel makes it to the fence and freedom. Now I watched a program about the speed of greyhounds and cheetahs. They said that the cheetahs beat the greyhounds in the turns as greys keep the same speed and cheetahs can pick up speed. WELL today CONRAD caught a ground squirrel flat footed and he was all over it. and he was turning like my old quarter horse, and KITTY was a trained cutting horse, she would literally turn in her own length {spin} without losing speed. and CONRAD sure looked to be doing the same thing, I think he has a little quarter horse in him.
  7. Oh CONRAD does RUN, when he sees? smells? senses? squirrels he is in drag racer mode much faster than Queen ever was. ah...USUALLY I have got to get a video, sometimes he ah, well prances like one of the old looney toon cartoons I can picture it, the animal would bounce and it is like CONRAD. I MUST take and download pictures my old I PONE is just not cutting it. After several attempts he finally looked UP after treeing the tree squirrel { we have both evil animals the pest ground squirrel and the beautiful pest BUT protected tree squirrel}. Conrad seemed to lose interest, then when she came down, BOOM. QUEEN would keep the SQUIRREL in the tree for an hour. FUN watching the squirrel's tail twitching in frustration. When I picked up CONRAD some of the staff were so happy he FINALLY got a forever home. I think we was so mellow that he did not get played with like the others and they were beginning to think he was going to be there forever. He is cat friendly which is one on my must haves [3 of the critters] and my wife does not want a "jumpy" dog with me in a wheelie chair. {and small grand kidlets} It took him a few days to understand that he is now HOME! The first couple of weeks he would only lay on his outside bed {we stay outside for several hours at a time} but after awhile he decided that Queens old digging/resting hole is A-OKAY and her secondary one is also worthy of plopping down for a rest. SO far he has NOT been a digger, but he sure does like to roo
  8. So when we adopted our dear Queen, she did not ROO, ROACH or play with stuffies... SHE did FIRST thing make a bee line to the couch but eventually she would roach, but ONLY on my bed and ONLY while I gave her belly scratches. Of course eventually I told HEMOPET they adopted out a DEFECTIVE GREYHOUND! Well she became my constant companion until, sadly, she came down with osteo and we had to put her down. So back to HEMOPET and what do you know, another broken GREYHOUND! NO ROACHING, and he flat will not even TRY to get up on the bed. Then outside the other day when the police were going by code 3 he started whimpering and getting agitated, I gave him a little roo, and BANG off he went ROOING his head off. WHENEVER he wants to ROO he comes over to me and "asks permission" well except when he does it in the middle of the night. He still sleeps in his crate at night. He had not done anything that might remotely be thought of as a roach, BUT after he has defended the back yard and trees from the EVIL squirrels he gets of excited he has grabbed an out side stuffy and ran around with it for a little bit. not much but it is a start. Oh and he has these ears that one goes east and the other goes south er north ah, well the kinda flop around. Finally he has learned to walk well with my wheel chair so I am afraid I am stuck with another "broken" greyhound
  9. do cat friendly greyhounds tend to not be big on romping with stuffy's?
  10. ah, no. I am in California and my dear wife is going to her high school reunion that weekend. MY BIRTHDAY weekend. she is leaving ON MY BIRTHDAY
  11. I have sinned and looked at your website and fallen in love with the martingale on LIBERTY at the end of the pictures. ah...it does need to be changed to CONRAD but other than that it looks beautiful and just what I am looking for. I did not really want the chain, but that was all I was seeing with the wide back narrow front martingales to quote the LOLCATS "must can has it!" I also sent a note from your website
  12. has anyone used one of the leather martingales that has a chain? I would like a nice leather martingale for my new greyhound Conrad in a nice tan color. Thoughts, sources? and if you have a suggestion of a standard martingale in all leather that would be great, thanks. Dan
  13. as the mother of my children will only allow me to have one grey at a time, I don't have that problem IF I go to a dog park my grey will ONLY run if the other dogs are muzzled too. or she is alone. When I went to Solvang Queen was never muzzled nor were the others and we did not have issues BUT they were all on leashes. Now Queen is gone, but not forgotten...and CONRAD has arrived a beautiful mostly black boy with pictures to follow....
  14. Thanks to all of you for the kind words. I went down to Hemopet for some grey lovin' today, I really, REALLY needed a fix. Betty had them bring out a BIG boy Haggard who proceeded to FREAK OUT about my wheel chair, then Hoda a very light colored brindle, and she could not figure out which side of the wheel chair to be on and generally was, for the want of a better term, something of an air head {with me} All she wanted to do is go back with one of the staffers to her crate, this told me how special Queen was, and such a good fit. THEN Betty brought out a smaller black boy Conrad, cat friendly and darned if he did not start walking like Queen with the chair. The best part was giving ear scritches and watching the eyes slowly close...Betty is not just a greyhound adopter, she is really a shadkhin {Yiddish for matchmaker} Now let's all sing the song from Fiddler on the roof, matchmaker, matchmaker, make me a match....
  15. My Kidron was pick of the litter, my wife and I were touring Israel and trying to think of a name, and we came to Kidron Valley and we both turned at the same time and that was it. When we picked up our little pup it turned out the breeder named all their dogs with biblical names. She lived for 8 or 9 years and then could not walk and we had to take her to the vet. Before I could get another dog, my dear wife started collecting rescue cats. My eldest son brought home the first, an abandoned kitten, then #2 son had a kitten from work { the wife was told if the litter was still in the house when he came home from his business trip HE was GONE, so cat #2 and she really did not want another dog. Somehow I found out about greyhounds and Hemopet {Queen was not only a rescue, she was a HERO as she donated blood before adoption} I started going down and just taking a dog or two out and walking them. Betty knew that if I was to adopt it would need to be cat friendly but I was just keeping the dogs happy. Well one day my wife said, and I quote " we are NOT getting a dog, and it HAS to be a female!" We both went down and walked several dogs, one I kinda liked but had some cervical issues and Jeanie did not like that, and one was a little jumpy but all just did not know what to do with my wheelchair. Then they brought out Queen for my wife's inspection, Queen was the only one who from the beginning walked with my chair like she was born to it. and that was it. I thought we were going to wait until the first of the year because I did not want to crate her on the second day we had her {Christmas/New Years week} well Betty said NO! pick her up Monday! I had thought we needed a few days to finish everything up... well we bonded and my dear wife let Queen and I be together for all things for the first month before she did much of anything. Now she has told me prepare to find a new companian Greyhound, so who am I do argue
  16. thank you all for your kind thoughts. last night I wanted to reach over and give her a belly rub {she would always roach for me} and this morning I was looking at her cookie and treat jars before I went out side for "our" morning outing... My dear wife told me last night that I needed to start my research for a new grey and could even look at males {she was afraid males would "mark" their territory"}. Queen was such a good girl, she was THE grey who walk with me and my wheelchair without any problems, all the others would bump into the chair or pull away or generally bounce around, So in a little while when I can look at a thread like this with clear eyes I will start seeing greys again. For now I have faith that she is romping in green clover with sunny skies with my beautiful big red dobie Kidron
  17. About 3 weeks ago my beautiful Queen started limping. She had done that before and got over it. This time after a week she was worse and really favoring the left front leg. We took her to the vet and the x-rays showed osteoscaroma in the left humerus almost at the scapula and traveling down 2/3s the length of the humerus. We started her on antibiotics and pain meds and she was showing greats signs of being her old self {she also had issues in her neck} today she got tangled up with one of my crutches and fell fracturing the humerus through the osteo and given about a 3 month survival IF with did a forequarter amputation {which I am not sure I could have affored anyway} we had her given pain meds to sleep and then on to the the bridge. Queen spent the last 5 plus years almost 24/7 with me. The only times we were apart were church and her or my doctor appointments. I really hurt right now. man I miss her. dan
  18. well, first thing, I missed the note inside the lid that said to start off with a 1/4 scoop and work up to the full cup... I started out with the full cup {their cup } she has not had any issues with her bowel movements, actually we have changed her diet several times and she never seems to have a problem. Not sure but I would like to think she is licking less. we will see.
  19. mine arrived today, I fed her tonight. mixed in the powder with her blue buffalo kibble and a little water. they also have some liquid that is fish oil and the other is just a tasty fatty acid. she ate just as fast as she always does. In the past she has not had issues with loose stools from diet changes so we shall see.
  20. the silence is deafing.... I have an order on the way, my girl had an issue with wheat in her food, and the last Dr. visit he want to add a different kibble after she had some dental work...he kinda forgot she cannot handle wheat products. We got her off it, but she still is licking, not as much, but still at it. The package is due Wednesday, 90 days to see if it works...
  21. Her royalness gets Blue Buffalo she cannot tollerate wheat {funny neither can my dear wife} and we mix some canned doggy food or some sardines in. She is fed once a day.
  22. Queen and I get up at about 7am but she never seemed interested in eating or even going out. we go out between 9-10am and she get some treats [usually a commercial jerky] only then will she THINK about doing her morning business. she may run a bit, usually before first and second poop. she also will chase the local critters [rabbits etc] we come in between noon and 1PM and go out again between 2-3PM she MAY remind me it is time to go out. She bumps my are and really, REALLY whines until I feed her at 5-6PM, then as soon as she is finished she rubs her nose on my arm until I take her out for a quick pee break, and she goes out for a final time at about 11PM, then she usually jumps back to bed and snuggles up and goes to sleeep.
  23. well I picked up Queen a year ago last November and we have been together 24/7 ever since Ok, after 2 weeks of the 24/7 she did spend a few hours on Sundays in her crate while we were at church. My DW allowed me to bond for the first month {she works and Queen is my "companion"} after that she began petting her, feeding cookies etc.but she is really REALLY my dog. She has the cats I still try to not be the meanie that puts her in the crate {she does not sleep in it} My #2 son will be getting married in the near future so we will finally find out how she does when I am gone for several days, cannot take her to Portland so....
  24. More like the size of a mastiff the fierceness of the pitbull the the bravery of the Ridgeback the heart of a collie and the SPEED of a greyhound
