  1. Can you run with your dog? I also find that Enza doesn't always *need* to run as one would think. She is actually more exhausted from a good long walk than from a sprint around the dog park, especially if it is a new location. On the weekends, I like to throw her in the car and find a new place to walk around for an hour or so and she always sleeps for *hours* afterward. It's amazing all the parks I've discovered since getting her.
  2. I think I am one of the few people who do take their dog to the park and both of us enjoy it. HOWEVER - I didn't do it until I had had Enza for at least 6 months. I didn't know her, she didn't know me, and I didn't know she'd react. I also only take her to the park that 1) is empty most of the time and 2) the one that I know everyone watches their dogs. In sum, I think you can take your dog - but not right now and not when there are small dogs there.
  3. Yeah - I'm leaning towards that, but after the crazy day with the neighbor's house fire and taking her poor dog to the vet, it was all K had her house when we finally got back and collapsed. Fed her some mashed potatoes and chicken and she's curled up ignoring the Olympics.
  4. After 24 hours, Enza FINALLY had a bowel movement this morning. It was nice and firm, as can be expected. A few feet later, she had pudding poo all over the road. I figured it was due to "holding" it for the storm and only going once a day for a week vs twice/three times. I got home, and she had another pudding poo accident in the living room and on our walk, she did it again. She did have the buffalo TOTW last night vs her regular TOTW Salmon. That and the only going once for a week are the only things adnormal. I'm going to give her a small amount of bland diet tonight but thoughts?
  5. Enza had it and it was not fun at all. She did get Flagyl but I was under the impression one of the few things that can cure giardia is Panacur and you have to dose them twice - once now and once three weeks later. So she had the bland diet, flagyl for 7 days, and two rounds of Panacur plus I added in probiotics before her tummy finally settled down. I think it's also hard to pinpoint where they pick it up as Enza had it and didn't go to dogparks then.
  6. I can't tell you many times I've gone on a walk and someone has pointed Enza is bleeding. That dog gets more knicks and dings and yet she SCREAMS bloody murder when she gets ice on her paw. I just bought some EMT gel for them as nothing else seems to work.
  7. I took a class at that store and you all nicely put up with my Enza and Laddie laying all over your floors! I highly recommend this store. Course Enza ate the knitting needles...
  8. I'd get a carbon monoxide detector as well. Better save this sorry.
  9. Ah - you have fallen victim to the "new owner on greytalk reading training threads and FREAKING OUT!" Been there. Done that. Kept staring at Enza waiting for her to eat me in my sleep. I liken it to having a cold and going on to WebMD and being convinced you have ebola virus. So take a deep breath - and you will be fine.
  10. A lot of people recommend Dr Kellogg in Falls Church. I live in Old Town and go to Caring Hands Animal Hospital in Arlington. Enza's vet is Dr Miller who has a greyhound. I love the staff - I walked in to get something and DIDN'T have her with me and was nicely yelled at. They handle my panicked phone calls with ease and answer most questions without a visit - and yet take her in right away if need be. I also love that they have weekend hours and stay open late. I appreciate how calm and rational they all are. Link to Vet Also - welcome to the area! If you ever want to meet up, let me know as there is a small group of us that run the dogs a lot. And wait till Spring and Doggie Happy Hour!
  11. Enza moves between her bed in the living room, the sofa, and her bed in the bedroom. As she doesn't really do anything, I don't worry about it. I admit I was a bit miffed when she first "graduated" from the bedroom, but now I figure she is just comfortable and doesn't need me.
  12. I buy panacur OTC and keep it on hand. It's not the pricey and it's the same thing as the vet gives me. I also second that rice sometimes doesn't work -instant mashed potatoes is the only thing that works for my girl.
  13. Rice does not work for Enza at all. Try instant mashed potatoes - she eats it and binds her up. As for probiotics- I'd just hit up a natural food store and use human pills as it's the same stuff and less $$. I'd also test for giardia as that messed up Enza for months. It took Panacur and flagyl to get her on the right track. As for chicken, I just buy the canned stuff and rinse it. Is it the best? Probably not but it works.
  14. Yep sounds about time for the pup to begin exploring more, breaking the rules, etc. Enza did that by jumping over the baby gate and chewing apart my living room. For about two weeks, nothing was safe from her and then she got bored with it all. I did walk her more and I did add a dog walker a few days a week. I did have to make some financial sacrifices myself, but it was worth it. I also recommend the treat ball as it can take a long time for things to roll out of it and I've seen how it tires Enza out - esp if one piece just won't fall out. I think everyone has given the advice I would, but I will say that Enza did grow out of it and I've learned that she is not a "routine" dog and likes to mix it up when it comes to walks, etc. If I don't, she gets antsy and whiny. If I do different routes, different toys, different wet food in the frozen kong - she's sleeps longer as she is just that more tired from various stimulations.
  15. Yep. I sat on the sofa and read for two days straight (a lovely indulgence I never do) and I think Enza moved maybe once or twice. She'd pick her head up if I walked into the kitchen or past the coat rack, but other than that - so very lazy. I kind of like it in that I don't feel so awful leaving her all day.
  16. I don't really see anything either, but fingers crossed it's only good things from the vet. Who are you going to?
  17. My parents' puppy Allie is bigger and very very very very energetic. She is freakishly smart and gets bored easily - and even I can't tire her out after hauling her out for a short run. She needs dog training classes soon and while I can recommend good ones by me, I don't know about any where they live. I think classes would be better than one on one as she needs socialization. Thanks!
  18. Enza doesn't seem to mind the panacur when I put it her in food. She doesn't have the big d on it and it actually seems to tighten her up more so she can go a day without going when she starts the drug.
  19. Just because I can be a worry wart - have you taken her to the vet just to make sure she is okay No hidden scratches etc?
  20. Luckily I have only seen crawling ones on Enza - however I did find an embedded one in my arm while I was in the shower. I am positive my neighbors got quite the show as I ran my apartment with shampoo in hair and screaming.
  21. One of the things I like best about letting Enza run is that she doesn't want to do ANYTHING the next day. So if I know that I will be particularly busy one day and she won't get her normal walks, I take her out and we play and play and play and play. As for the dreaming - oh yeah. It's freakishly adorable too.
