  1. Welcome to GT. I really enjoy this site. Just to let you know, you don't have to have a house to have a greyhound. I adopted my guy when I lived in an efficiency apartment of about 250 sq ft. He fit just fine! We took lots of walks and went to off leash dog parks almost every day. they make great apartment dogs because they're so quiet and lazy er, such couch potatoes. Enjoy this site and enjoy your dog when you finally get him/her/them!
  2. 3 years ago today, I drove from Madison down to Burlington to the kennel to meet Davis. He had broken his leg racing, and had been fostered in northern Illinois. His foster mom broughthim up to the kennel so I could meet him. It was love at first sight, for me. Going from the track to a foster home in the country to a small apartment in downtown Madison was quite a change for him. It took him a while to get used to all the people, buses, trucks, bikes, snall dogs, etc., but he adapted. 4weeks after he came home, I took him to the GPA-WI Gala, and he knew he was home. Mom took him to see greyhounds! He relaxed so much after that day. To celebrate his 3rd GOTCHA day, we went to the dog park for over an hour after work. He sspent lots of time sniffing dogs and trees and grass and fence. He even spent some time playing. Afterwards, we went to a pet food store and mommy got him special canned dog food for his dinner! Also, a new dog treat for desert. He is now curled up contentedly near me while I'm on my sister's computer. Happy GOTCHA Day DAvis! My sweet-ums, my main man, my heart dog, Davis.
  3. Have you tried a 2-handled leash with Ajax? I got a new collar for Davis, a blue one, and wanted a matching leash. however, the only one I could find had 2 handles: the regular loop at the end for the wrist, and a larger one near the clip that i could grab hold of to keep him right next to me. I never used that much, but when my sister would walk him she liked it, because he couldn't zig-zag in front of her all the time. It's a nice way to get them used to walking where they're "supposed" to walk, but still give them the freedom to sniff.
  4. Davis got a small puncture from a stick at the dog park the first couple of weeks after I moved here. I didn't notice it at first because it was in his chest. Then when he got up from his dog bed I saw the blood on it. He had stitches and to keep him from bothering it,I took an old sheet and cut it into strips. I wrapped it criss-crossed over his chest, betweeen his legs, under his belly and I tied it on his back. It looked funny but kept him from getting at it and bothering the stitches.
  5. My sister and I are going to Wisconsin for July 4th. We'll be leaving Virginia Beach about 3 pm on July 1st, and we need a good suggestion for where to stay on the way out there. My sister's high school reunion is over that weekend, and there is a dinner she wants to attend at 6 pm Friday evening in our hometown. We're willing to drive until around 10 pm or so Thursday night, so we won't have to get up at the crack of dawn on Friday to get home before 6. Anyone have any suggestions?
  6. Welcome! This is a great forum. There's lots of good info here and greyt people!
  7. What a sweetie! Welcome home Bullet.
  8. Just found this thread, my friend. I am so glad to hear Miss Sage is doing better. A Neighbor's dog also had lots of worms recently and I have been keeping an eye on Davis to be sure he's OK. I really am hoping & praying that Miss Sage continues to do better and that soon she will be in top form and keeping Roscoe in line.

he looks like Frisker. Did he help with homework? My daughter used to take in homework with cat teeth marks on the pages because Frisky "helped her" with her homework.
  10. I am so relieved that roscoe is doing better. I really hope he keeps improving! Prayers and well wishes still going your way. Tail wags from Davis to Roscoe!
  11. Keeping you & Roscoe in my thoughts & prayers.
  12. Hope things are going better today for Roscoe. I know how hard it is, dealing with a sick/injured dog. (Davis got injured last year just after I moved here. He was on meds for 2 weeks, and did nothing but eat and sleep for 4 days!) Roscoe is such a sweetie, I'm realling hoping/praying he gets better soo n.
  13. Lisa, I'm so sorry to hear about Roscoe. I hope the meds work for him and he feels/sees better soon. Take good care of that sweet big boy! Rebecca
  14. Davis is rather reserved. I've had him for 2 1/2 years now, and he is still diffident at M&Gs. However, at the dog park he is very friendly. On the street, he will watch people walk by and then approach him from behind! When I first got him, I was able to come home at lunch the first couple of months. He adjusted very quickly to being alone. I left the TV on for him - he got to watch Animal Planet all day! Still does! He gets a couple special treats when I go to work - a peanut butter kong and a 'peanut butter and dried duck or chicken sandwich' made with quality biscuits. I throw one in the bedroom and the other in the living room. Sometimes he doesn't even come to the living room when I leave; other times he looks at me like, 'why are you still here? It's time for my knog." So, he's done well being an 'only'.
  15. Where is the Member Map? I looked under Members, but there was no link to it. I looked in my profile, but there was no option to set my pin. Where do I find the member map?
  16. What a story indeed! I couldn't help but cry reading it and am so glad your beloved guy is OK.
  17. Davis never barks! The ONLY time I've heard him bark is at the off-leash dog park, after the same dog has tried to hump him too many times! He usually sidles away from the other dog, but if he gets persistent, Davis wil whirl & bark in the other dog's face. Very surprising, as that's the only time I've heard him bark.
  18. Davis took a long time to learn to play. When I was first able to take him to off-leash dog parks, I took him to a real small one. The first couple of weeks he paced and watched the other dogs play. After about a week and a half, he raced for the ball and got there first. He sniffed it and looked up in disbelief, like 'You're chasing that!?! It's not even alive!' Then he started romping with other dogs some,. When I took him to the larger parks, he spent most of his time sniffing, but some of it running and some of it playing with the other dogs we got to know there. I got him a few toys; mostly stuffies that squeaked. But he didn't like it when I shook them at him or squeaked them at him, and if I threw them at him he got up and moved away. When we moved to virginia Beach, he made friends with a golden retriever. After several days of rain, the golden's mom called me up and asked if Davis could come over and play - her dog was driving her nuts because it was too wet & muddy to go to the dog park. When we over there, he saw the golden playing with toys. He just watched for the longest time. When he realized that the golden liked one toy in particular, he stole it from him! He Tossed it in the air a couple of times and wouldn't let his friend have it, then suddenly tossed it back to him and went and found other toys. He doesn't play with toys a lot, but does a little bit every day. He just needed a dog to show him what to do!
  19. I don't know how to vote for this. There's what I used to do (several walks) and what I do now (yard, dog parks). When I lived in Wisconsin, in an apartment, I walked my dog several times every day. Due to a broken leg (cast removed by the time I got him), he limped after only a few minutes. I gradually increased the lenth of our walks to 1 1/2 - 2 hours every night!!! Good exercise for us both! About a year ago, the vet said I could start taking him to the off-leash dog parks. I still took him on about 3 - 4 short potty walks a day, but we also went to the park for an hour or two (or three on weekends). Madison has nice, large parks. He got a LOT of walking and some running in there. I'm living with my sister in Virginia now. She has a small yard and he goes out for potty breaks several times a day. I still take him to the dog park almost every day, and someone (myself, sister or brother-in-law) walks him when we don't go to the park or beach. I really believe dogs need to get out of their own space and snif the neighborhood, or dog park. I love the dog park, because he can wander around at will and spend as much time sniffing an area or going back to it as often as he wants! On walks, I find myself urging him along or preventing him from going where the smells are more interesting (like someone's flower bed by their front door). Also at the dog park, he can take off and run if he likes. He plays well with others, and does not have a high prey drive, so he runs and plays well even with smaller dogs.
  20. Hello from Virginia Beach! We just moved here from Wisconsin and are new to the site also. Greyt site - lots of good info & new friends.
  21. Hi! I just moved from Madison to VA Beach. I miss it up there! People here complain abouth the cold, and I'm in shirtsleeves! I was without access to a computer until recently, so I just found this site. I've had my main man Davis for over a year now. Greyhounds are GREYT!
  22. Hi! Davis and I are new to VA Beach too - just in the last month. I've had my guy for 16 months now...what a joy he is! If you go to virginiagreyhounds.com you can find out where the Meet-N-Greets are & you can get together with other greyts and their parents.
  23. I just updated my profile - email me when you're going to be in VA Beach & we can arrange to get together! My daughter lives in Fairfax, so I'll get up there occasionally. Only trouble is, she's HIGHLY allergic to dogs, so it may be a while before I can afford to go up there & get a motel for me & the mutt.
  24. Sounds good to me! DAvis would love to hang out with another grethound! Thank you , thank You! We're looking forward to making freinds online!
