lisa, oh my gosh i just came back from a trip and discovered this whole thread. i am so glad and relieved that roscoe is improving.

Sometimes, Lola would wake us up in the middle of the night, and want to go out in the back yard. I thought she had a tummy problem and really had to go, so i would get up and let her out. Only to realize.....she just wanted to walk around and hang out in the back yard at 3AM!! so now, i wait a couple of minutes until i hear her lie back down....before i rush to the back door.

We've had Lola for 7 months, and she is just starting to become more affectionate, and act like she likes us. She spends a large part of the time lying on the couch, giving us the "stink eye", and looking worried. or sleeping. in just the past week, she's been coming all the way down the hall to the front door, with her tail wagging, to greet us when we get home. that's a first!! and we've had jackie for almost a year, and her personality is still changing for the better. so i say, like the others, just be patient and let your bonding unfold over the weeks and months. your toki sounds just fine. have you posted a picture yet??

Lola was accident prone at first. We've had about 2 good months now (knock on wood). Jackie never had a problem, and she holds in her pee and poo for a freakishly long time. Lola seems to just need to be let out more often, but we are figuring it out, and she is getting better about letting us know. Congratulations on your sweet, well-behaved boy.

we got our second, Lola, after having Jackie for 4 months. i called the adoption group where we got jackie, and asked if she had a dog in mind that was cat safe, and a good fit with Jackie. i was all set for a boy, but Lola was suggested for us, and they have gotten along great from the first day. Jackie's personality seemed to come alive with a second dog around. She also became a much better eater. For awhile, they both wanted to eat out of the same bowl.....it was hard to get them to separate. they still do it sometimes. there was never a growl out of either one. what made me the happiest was when they started running and playing together, after a couple of months. out of the two, my experience has been the same as Gracegirl's. Lola is a little more of a challenge to figure out. I was initially worried about having 2 dogs...i'd never done that before, but now i can say i don't regret the decision one bit. it's been great for them to have each other, and i could just stare at them and love them all day. Oh and i want to add...we did bring Jackie with us to pick a dog out, but she didn't really show a preference for any one dog, so we went with their pick. I hope this works out for you!! For us, it was a very good thing to get a 2nd hound.

Lola is scared of wind. Or, to be more accurate, the palm trees noisily swaying in the wind. She must think they are monsters.

Ok, lemme see how to put this. We often work at home, so we are here with the dogs a lot. We take them for walks, rides in the car every day, and to the dog park often. But still, they want more! Every time i put shoes on, or a jacket on, or make any move, they fly off the couch and run to the front door and go nuts. I feel bad. I can't do something fun with them every minute; i have to get work done. I am happy to play with them any time, but they don't want this, they want to GO somewhere. does anyone else have this experience?? ps. a siren just went by and they both started rooing!!

Abby used to do that, too, especially when someone was at the door. she would get so excited that she would grab a mouthful of food and drop it all over the hallway. I really miss it now.

the same thing happened to us a couple of weeks ago. the baby gate is sort of near where they eat, and the cats knocked the baby gate down. the next day, Lola wouldn't eat her dinner. we couldn't figure out what was wrong. i babied her, and brought her dinner to her (i know some people are cringing) for a couple of nights, since she wouldn't go near that area. i really wanted her to eat; she's a little underweight. anyway, when we figured out that it was the gate that she was afraid of, we just moved it away and the problem was solved. Lola is also afraid of the big green garbage cans at the end of people's driveways. That fear is slowly subsiding, but it's taken several months. good luck with your falling gate setback; i'm sure the things that people have suggested will work for you.

Hello and Happy New Year to all, Last night and tonight has brought on a new problem for Jackie, who we've had for 7 months. She hears firecrackers set off in the neighborhood, and starts shaking and panting really, really hard. It seems to be getting worse; this was not a problem on 4th of July. First of all, is this much anxiety harmful for the dog if she's shaking and panting for several hours?? AND, is there anything we can do for her? I tried turning up the football game. I feel bad for her that she is this scared. The firecracker noise stopped long ago. Thanks for any advice! tracy

lola got up at 5:30, pacing around. so, i let her out in the back, just in case she needed to go. when we got back in, she paced around for the next 3 hrs, whined, and barked. she was SO agitated and restless about something. has this ever happened to anyone? PS. we can rule out: being cold, not being allowed in our bed, being hungry. and also, in our house everyone usually sleeps til 8 or 9. thanks and Happy Holidays! love to all on greytalk.

awwwww, gumby. what a cute girl she was! i hope she's playing with Abby up there. i know it's hard....

i can't believe it's been 6 months since abby left us. we still miss her enormously. here's a video of her singing with my french horn.

jackie: 4 times in 4 months. that makes it once a month so far. lola: every other day or so, when excited. she also makes a sound somewhere between a bark and a roo, when happy.

those were beautiful words about your boy. he will always be a part of you. so sorry...

Speaking of this....has anyone found the best way to do this? i got these bags called "mutt mitts" from amazon. they are easy to use and bio-degradable. it makes the task so much more pleasant that i don't mind paying for bags. also, the part with the poop is reinforced, so the smell doesn't come thru like with regular shopping bags.

yes jackie and lola are allowed on the couch. luckily there is still room for us to sit.

i will call the vet about this, but i guess i just needed to ask you guys, too. we've had Lola for a week and she's got the big D. do they have worms sometimes when you adopt them? our adoption person said this is probably what it is, and to go ahead and de-worm her a little early. i know it could be stress and diet, too. i just want her tummy to feel better. she clearly does not enjoy having such bad poops. i know this is pretty common. with Jackie, the same thing just resolved itself after about a month, and we were doing all these things and i don't know which one finally worked....

we went through pretty much the same thing in May, with Abby. i concur with the "better a day early..." opinion. as sad as i was, i felt thankful afterwards for no guilt about waiting too long. your vet will be able to help. thoughts are with you today.

that is so sad; sorry for your loss. i'm glad she had love and cuddles in her last week.

Just thinking about Abby, who we lost on May 10th. We miss you so much!
