  1. This may sound silly, but I need to soak Quiet Man's paw in Epsom Salts and I'm not sure how to do it. I must admit I have been lax in treating his corn beyond walking him with a Thera-paw, but he's limping so much on it I need to do something, and it is actually at the surface where if I can soften it up I think I can pick it away. So my question is, what is a creative way to soak the paw of a dog who spends 95% of his time lying down (and I might mention does not like having his feet touched)?
  2. How scary! I hope he is okay. Did you get information on the owner? He should be the one paying the bills. You could even file a police report if you have a leash law there.
  3. This is the website I ordered mine from. Canine Auto Restraint System He can stand up or lie down with it on, just not turn around. It took a few tries for him to get used to it without getting tangled, but he's now been wearing it for years on trips from 5 minutes to 8 hours. And I found a blurb about the force in a crash: "In a 30 mph. collision occupants of the vehicle can exert a force 20 times that of their body weight! Seat belts and harnesses protect by absorbing some of this force and distributing the load evenly across the stronger areas of the body, protecting the head, neck, and body from injury. A dog restraint that reduces this potential impact force can make the difference between life and death, and help prevent serious injury".
  4. Am I the only one who realizes how unsafe it is to have 85 lbs of dog unrestrained in a car? I don't know the technical terms for the weight/G-force or whatever it's called in an accident. But I do know that even at slow speeds an accident could cause your dog to go straight through the windshield or get tossed out of the car. Heads hanging out the window in an accident could also be fatal. Call me paranoid, but I am never without my seatbelt in the car, and neither is my dog. He wears a seat belt harness everytime he's in the car, even for quick trips, and he's not allowed to stick his head out the window. I know I am in the minority, but I feel a lot better knowing we are both buckled up!
  5. I just learned this the hard way! And it does not deter licking, even though it says it does and smells horrible! Quiet Man licked it to death. I think it is best to temporarliy stop bleeding, etc. But not for long term healing.
  6. I know Gardens Alive sells beneficial nematodes. Gardens Alive
  7. My vet that I've had for years has also recently started reccomending Advantix, I wonder if they are getting a kickback from it or something? Quiet Man has been on Frontline Plus for 6 years with no problems, so there's no way I'd switch now, even at the advice of my vet.
  8. Not greyt. He got the bandage off again last night, and I heard licking but it didn't dawn on me until it was too late that it was his tail. I have now learned to differenciate the sound of him licking his tail vs. licking his a*hem! I took him to the beach today and hoped to get some salt water on it, but it was far too chilly! What concerns me is that he'll lick it to the bone That won't be good......
  9. Well the bandage w/ neosporin worked for a few days, (the EMT gel just got too dry & crusty) but now he's learned how to get the bandage off, the little bugger, so we are taking backwards steps. I put it on a little tighter today, we'll see how long it lasts. Now I'm concerned about how much neosporin he has licked !
  10. Quiet Man cut his tail (or got bit), in a scuffle with a loose dog about a week ago. I'm not sure how it happened b/c it happend so fast and I didn't know it was bleeding until I got home. (Spoke w/ the owners to make sure the dog had shots just in case). Anyway.....I cleaned it with peroxide, put some EMT gel on it and wrapped it for the first few days to get the bleeding to stop (Not stitchable). Everytime I take the bandage off to give it some air he licks it raw. I don't know what is worse, keeping it covered, or letting him lick it? He licks the EMT gel right off too. It's not huge or too bad looking, I just don't want it to get infected. I have a bite-not collar, but I'm trying to avoid having to use it.
  11. I thought the gel was supposed to deter licking (it smells awful), but Quiet Man has a wound on his tail and he constantly licks the gel off. I kept it wrapped for a few days, but wanted to give it some air and he licks it off right after I put it on. It's not able to get stiched either, so I'm just praying it does not get infected.
  12. Penny, as I have tears streaming down my face for you and your family, I am comforted by the fact that you lived out your senior years with the best greyhound family that could ever be. You are very lucky to have Kerri, Mark, Gus, Yardman, Battle & Doug as your family, they will love you forever, and so will we... -Jennifer & Quiet Man
  13. I don't like dog parks in general, regardless of breed. Hope your guy is okay.
  14. It's pretty much like people-stand behind them, put your fists just under their breastbone and thrust. I think me propping him up on the edge of the table was just me. Here's directions (but no illustration-sorry) on how to do it. (linky.) Thanks for the link. I thought I remembered reading somewhere to actually lift the dog's hind legs to thrust behind the ribcage? Whatever you did worked though, so I'm sure there's many ways.
  15. Oh Gus-man! I'll be thinking of you tonight! But I know you are a trooper!
  16. Does anyone have a link to a picture of how to give a dog the heimlich? I know it is different for big dogs than small dogs. I think it is important information. You're a hero!
  17. Quiet Man is 11 and has had to start going out more often and still occasionally leaks in his sleep. He had a full vet check and nothing was wrong. I did use belly bands for a while while I wasn't home and at night, that seemed to help. I am lucky to have a job that I can come home midday to let him out too.
  18. I'm sorry for the news on Heath. You know I'm nearby, let me know if you need anything.
  19. I am so very sorry for your loss
  20. Any signs of the Velcro today? I'm sure a lot of vets could tell many stories of the crazy things puppies have eaten and passed. I wouldn't be too worried unless she shows any signs of being uncomfortable.
  21. What a nice rememberance of your boy. I'm sure it's not easy. Bonanza, take good care of your daddy today. We're thinking of you & James.
  22. Tarmac, you are one handsome reindeer!
