  1. If you think it might be a food allergy you might want to consider switching to California Natural, it has very limited ingredients (see link below). My friend's Rhodesian Ridgeback has a lot of allergies as is constantly chewing herself and her feet. The vet suggested the CN sweet potato and salmon.

I saw that someone mentioned Epsom salts, I was wondering how it would be to use the stuff they are using on Ranchie, the dog with the bad staph infection on his leg. It is called Domeboro and I believe it is used as a soak like Epsom salts.

    Good luck!

  2. Results are in. We knew it was Cushings and now we know it's the pituitary affected. My vet is calling the Lysodren into Walgreens and Misty will also be on a low dose of Pred to combat the side effects of the Lysodren. She will be on the meds for 10 days and then we'll have to do the blood work up again to monitor where she's at. He said what will be very important is to measure her water consumption because in his opionion, we don't want to make Misty Addisionian. Lysodren is a dangerous drug. He said that pituitary tumors are very slow growing so that's good news. Thank you for all your support for my little girl.I'm afraid this is going to be a scary ride. I should also mention that my vet wanted to wait 5 days to start the drugs because he wanted me to measure her water consumption first, but I just don't want to wait because her weight loss is scaring me.

Oh, Claudia, I'm sorry. At least now you know exactly what you are dealing with and have a course of action to follow. I understand you not wanting to wait 5 days to start treatment, especially considering how much weight she has lost and how thin she is, I'd feel the same way.

From the other posts I'm reading you have lots of voices of experience to fall back on. You and Misty are not going through this blindly or alone.

  3. I use Frontline once every 3 months. It is good for flea protection for up to 3 months, there are not a lot of ticks in my area (I've never seen one in the 20+ years I've lived here), so I only use it for flea protection. I was using Frontline Plus, but Carl gets a creepy reaction to it, head bobbing, once or twice for a minute or less within the first two weeks I use it on him so I'm switching to the Frontline TopSpot, it doesn't have all the other stuff in it.

Here in Southern California, fleas are active all year round.

Anna gets Advantage, in a lower dose than recommended.

    It is quite effective.

I just saw your post, very interesting! What dosage do you use?

  4. I'd definitely look into that--there are other preparations (drops) and meds (Neo/Poly/Dex), as well as compounding pharmacies that can custom blend prescription medications (somebody here was saying she got her pannus meds from a compounding pharmacy just last week).

Thanks, I'll ask the eye vet about it when we go to our follow-up visit, in about a week and a half. I'd just started wondering lately if it was the ointment agent rather than the medication itself, though, I think with the Tacro, because his reaction to that was so severe, it might have been both the medication and the ointment agent.

  5. Carl cannot tolerate Tacromlimus ointment or the Cyclosporin ointment, he had a bad reaction to both of them. He is on the Pred 2 x a day for now. I'm wondering if the problem is with the agent in the ointment rather than the medications themselves.

Anyway, I have one tube of each, used once each, sitting in my fridge, if anyone is So Cal can use them I'd be happy to give them to you. I don't think it would be a good idea to ship them as I believe they both need to be refrigerated all the time. Please PM me if you want one or both!

Monty too did terribly on a bunch of very expensive Pannus meds. We donated our Cyclosporine drops and ointment to our adoption group, in exchange for a free weekend of boarding!

That's a great idea, thanks! If I don't hear from anyone here today I'll email them to see if they can use them.

  7. I noticed cloudiness on the outside edges of Carl's corneas in June. The vet diagnosed Pannus, it seemed to get better immediately with prednisone drops, then it started getting worse. We upped the dosage to 3 drops per day. I asked for a referral to an opth. We went, in Sept, and found that it was NOT Pannus, but we have a tentative (I think) diagnosis of Corneal Dystrophy. No scraping or blood work at the opth, though he had bloodwork from the original Pannus dx, indicating no problems.

So far Carl cannot tolerate Tacromlimus ointment or the Cyclosporin ointment, he had a bad reaction to both of them. He is on the Pred 2 x a day for now. I'm wondering if the problem is with the agent in the ointment rather than the medications themselves.

  8. Hey, congratulations and welcome! Ladybug is very lucky to have a new loving home with you, she has a beautiful face.

What did you do to help her overcome her pain? I've got a 13 year old Shiba Inu/Chow mix who has some arthritis, but not bad enough to medicate, so I'd love to learn about what you did/are doing to help Miss L. Bug.
