  1. Does anyone know how much it is for Dr Couto's practice to review xrays? I looked at the site but got bit baffled with technical terms to know which pricing applied. Thanks NeylasMom didn't know that, I don't want it assumed just on timeframe only to discover he's been really unlucky & it be a secondary issue to original lameness.
  2. He is a great dog, smart & knows his own mind, but so easy to have around, if I could copy his character to keep always I'd be very tempted even though I don't agree with cloning Chased up vet's today but he's still not heard from his boss about the xrays, don't feel its acceptable to be waiting 2 weeks to get an opinion! Feel like getting digital copies of xrays & going elsewhere. Throps due his next Cartrophen injection soon so need to know treatment plan as that doesn't interact with some things.
  3. How about fostering for a rescue to see if different breed fits what you want & can see how Ruby gets on without long term commitment, may give you a better idea about what you are looking for in a dog (& can cope with). It can come as a bit of a shock though after having a greyhound just how busy & amount of your attention some dogs need. I have 2 greys & a lurcher, they haven't needed a lot of training and since getting the foster bully mutt I'm busy busy, he needs the mental stimulation so do various training sessions a day & separate walks that are interactive rather than relaxing. for a youngster (11 months now) he's not even that energetic compared to some breeds must be his mastiff side. I have enjoyed training as he's more responsive its rewarding for me but at same time can be overwhelming on my limited skills, he's a natural watchdog but this can bring up other issues such as barking at visitors or while in car when people get close so more training needed there. Thankfully I don't live where we have many people passing house or garden.
  4. Perhaps wasn't very clear if density loss or gain? Vet doesn't think osteosarcoma anyway due to fact he had lameness last July time so would probably be dead by now. There's a bone spur growth coming off outside of wrist, where the swelling is. Thanks for link silverfish just wish vets were as helpful at the moment. Had Richard Tor not been retiring & shutting practice, I'd have taken Throp back there.
  5. Went to Vet's today but feel no further forward as his boss (orthopedic specialist) hasn't got back to him about xrays yet so will ring us later in the week. Vet was ushering us away after checking Throps gums had healed ok, only my partner pressed for some further information. So no treatment plan yet just more waiting & I feel pretty pissed off!
  6. Yes I was glad to hear it wasn't definitely bone cancer, i had considered that possibility. Am wondering what they may do if arthritis and bone density going as presumably it will get weaker not just painful? I so wish appointment was sooner as apart from.all these questions, would like to get idea of possible costs before making other financial decisions that may take up funds. He's insured but aware £4k doesn't go as far as it used to with vets bills.
  7. Not sure point of post as I've no diagnosis yet to ask advice on but feeling anxious & stressed Throp had his wrist xrayed (& a dental) on Friday as he has started to become uncomfortable on it lately,he rests it when stood still & it now wobbles with strain, moving he seems better although I think his rear looks bit weaker lately. Unfortunately got to wait until this Friday for a consult on the xrays, though the orthopedic specialist vet (practice owner) should've also looked over them. Our vet said the bone texture/density has changed on outer side of right wrist and is some swelling under skin. So briefly either osteoarthritis or bone cancer, he thinks former more likely as Throp started having lameness last summer (Cartrophen injections had improved limp/pain till recently).
  8. Heard of it & worth trying to see if has any benefit but may need at least 6 weeks to see any change. There's so many on market, yumove advance has been tested & they do a working one which is a bit cheaper for younger active dogs but can't see that much difference in ingredients. Some brands work out rather expensive per month for greyhound dose, our vet reccomended the stride plus too but was in a liquid form. I Keep meaning to give the turmeric golden paste a try on my oldies as hearing lots of positives & be more economical with 3 hounds.
  9. Welcome to GT! Some unraced dogs were not retired due to lack of prey drive as I've had 2 training dropouts, but presumably they'll be looking for the non chasers who won't run after the lure but will likely be young <2yrs so maybe like big puppies still. I would ask about their cat testing process too. Perhaps have a look at Accolade hounds or GRWE not sure how close to you they are, but have some cat trainable greyhounds in. http://www.accoladehounds.com/ http://www.grwe.com/our-dogs/ Lincolnshire greyhound trust doesn't usually foster with cats but seems to home quite a few dogs (includings ex-racers) successfully into cat households so it can work out from a kennel situation too. Think a lot comes down to skill of person testing the dogs reactions to the cat tbh. There's some general advice about cat training & other stuff you may find useful on GRWE sitehttp://www.grwe.com/advice-support/care-guidelines/
  10. An old GTmember Neroamber had all her greyhound's teeth extracted, he was more comfortable after but had permanent ETS which made him look very cute http://forum.greytalk.com/index.php/topic/261892-hounds-with-no-teeth/ http://www.petforums.co.uk/dog-chat/158633-neros-dental.html
  11. I used a dogmatic headcollar (looks bit like a horse halter) on my greyhound Hattie with double ended lead attached to the harness which gave me good control when she would pull, rear & spin on spotting cats, squirrels etc. The headcollar end of lead had more slack so she didn't lunge into it just could use it to give me some control in those moments. I use a gentle leader on my lurcher who will on occassions just tow you where she wants to go on a collar, that has a link strap to clip to a collar. The GL is more adjustable but I don't like how it can move on the muzzle. Our foster mutt pup I don't think had much basic training & pulls like a train, we slowly introduced a GL headcollar (just what I had in that fitted) which helped a bit with control (used with double lead). We then saw a trainer & the clicker training has worked brilliantly for him so he knows what things he did right as I suspect previously he got treats just to distract him from pulling by previous owner.
  12. There was an greyhound rehoming kennel that trialed plaque off & they didn't feel it made much difference, but it works for some dogs as people do recommend it. I couldn't see much of a change but I'm not sure DH always put it in the food daily. http://www.millieswolfheart.co.uk/ do the beef trachea's and allsorts of other chews. I got my dogs a MW hamper for Christmas so I could see what they liked. Zooplus is also a popular place online to buy a range of natural chews from what I read on dog forums.
  13. That's just how it is with dog rescue's in the UK, quite a few choose not to home to people that work full-time at all probably because many dogs end up in rescue because people didn't have time for them or dog was noisy/destructive etc & there's a higher risk with returns for a rescue the longer a dog is left. Thankfully its not all rescues, but its just a cultural difference I guess about what's deemed acceptable. I'm sure dogs are similar to humans in that at night the body alters need to urinate so it doesn't disturb sleep. It does work for some dogs but i personally wouldn't like to leave my own dogs daily for 8hrs straight without a loo break, i've noticed over the years that my dogs only drink when I get home probably knowing that access to toilet is restricted, as they'll drink more frequently while I'm home.
  14. Welcome to Greytalk, I'm also from the UK. Sounds like you could be a great greyhound owner. I can tell you that £600 per year is going to be difficult to keep a greyhound on. I have 2 greyhounds & a lurcher. Per dog it costs me £16 per month for a good budget food & insurance is £35, £4 on chews/treats.wormers is £20 a year, vaccinations £35 & lots of other bits & bobs I buy & don't count up. A Normal vet consult is £35 in my area but out of hours emergency or a specialist referall can be £75-£150+ just to be seen & any treatment/ meds on top & often this has to be paid at the time. Vet bills can get expensive quickly hence why I prefer to have some insurance but its not like other insurance that you can chop & change. It needs to be lifetime cover rather than time limited & once your dog has any ailments on vet records its difficult to switch insurers as they'll be excluded as pre-existing & often grouped, Pru had case of bad diarrhea before i decided to adopt her that hasn't reoccurred since but all bowel conditions are now excluded. Some insurers have recently left the market & others vets won't deal with as poor at paying up too, so have to choose wisely early on. Petplan is probably best & most widely accepted but isn't cheap. In the UK groups vary on their views some don't want their dogs to spend any more than 4hrs alone tops, but even those that are fine with full-time workers will likely want the dog to be given opportunity to toilet every 4hrs (that was what RGT branch we went to was happy with). I would consider what happens post uni when your less likely to be able to nip home, could you afford a dogwalker if turns out your dog isn't ok left 8hrs straight daily, my female grey needs to go out to toilet about every 5-6hrs & my lurcher gets distressed being left for more than a few hours as is very people oriented. What you could also look into is fostering as the rescues cover vet bills & often pay for food too. Its not always easy emotionally but your helping a dog into its new home while it enjoys home comforts & does save dogs lives as frees up space at the rescue to take more in. It may give you bit more flexibility while in uni.
  15. Some useful tips, I need to do some more work with my guys as they don't go offlead anywhere but home as nowhere is fenced in so can get lazy on keeping up the training.
  16. Hope the cardiologist visit can give you a clearer picture of the issue & whether you actually need to restrict Dino running. Both my greyhounds were diagnosed with murmurs grade 2/3 by different vets at our practice, yet the blood bank vets (health check quarterly) & sports vet which both see plenty of greyhounds say they don't.
  17. Congratulations on your new additional & welcome to greytalk. In the UK the blues aren't rare but are still very popular and so many are imaginatively named Blue so Moonie is a nice change. I used to walk a girl grey called Moon due to the crescent shape on her nose. I imagine a crate for traveling is safer in case of a crash but many opt to use car harness to secure on the back seat instead or nothing as above poster.
  18. Ooer! I thought I'd already posted a reply a while back must've gone into a blackhole instead . Pru hasn't had another seizure since and is her usual happy self. She's currently cuddled upto me She's insured for £7k vet fees a year, so we could go for MRI /specialist if needs be, think it would be useful to know if it is actually a brain lesion/tumour or some other cause if the seizures do increase. The replies on this thread are very reassuring & informative.
  19. I never used a crate with my greyhounds in their early days, they were gated into the kitchen when unsupervised so any mess or damage was limited. It was only due to the lurcher we had on foster that we got a crate. Pru was naughty unsupervised & i knew she had been crate trained by the rescue. Pru if left loose in living room with other 2 jumps the 4ft dog gate to get into the kitchen or upstairs. A week or 2 after I got the lurcher's crate, my greyhound injured a spinal disc & was on crate rest for a month so had to buy a 2nd crate, she accepted it fine considering I didn't train her, but expect as a racer she'd had some time in similar while travelling or for magnetic treatment as was relaxed ( UK racers generally not kept crated but kennelled, often in pairs). I have to admit they're useful to have but do take up a lot of room & heavy to move about. Bought ours cheap on an eBay store, suprisingly many secondhand ones were around same price probably as they paid double originally at the local pet stores, but I didn't have the time to hunt out a bargain.
  20. We feel positive that there's treatment for the seizure's if it does become more regular just bit concerned that vet thinks cause is likely a brain lesion & not sure yet what that may mean. Scullysmum- vet just meant that her age (8ish) its unlikely to be epilepsy causing the seizures.
  21. Pru had another seizure 3.30 this morning about same time as before, very similar to previous one. She'd gone past paddling stage into heavy panting but still unresponsive by time the BF had got the diazapam in his rush he picked up the wrong meds first time so must've lasted a few minutes. It would've been sensible to time it, had I not still been half asleep. Unfortunately her anal glands emptied too which is a new unpleasant dog experience for me. She was more active afterwards this time, we took her downstairs as its cooler than our bedroom and she was extremely hungry, even after we gave her a bit of food she was trying to jump the dog gate to the kitchen. Had to take her upstairs again as was just obsessive & wouldn't settle. She had a nap with me for few hours but hasn't been as tired, the greys in contrast have been comatose for most of the day as its so warm Seen vet this evening (different lady to last time) she's said due to Pru's age epilepsy is unlikely and thinks its a brain lesion causing the seizures. We can get an MRI scan of her brain but it sounded a bit pointless as treatment will be the same to reduce frequency. If pru has another seizure within the next month they'll start on some medication. Vet wasn't particularly reassuring & think she only did a health check as I queried it vet mentioned she'd had check up Tuesday for her booster Vacs. Feeling a little down at the mo, suppose its just reminder that time with our dogs is limited.
  22. My girl Hattie has a tendency to grab the lead when she see's prey so I sometimes muzzle her especially if I'm walking more than one as she's caught my fingers before, better to stay safe while training. This type http://www.muzzlesforgreyhounds.com/greyhound-muzzle.html are great and my guys are much happier in them and more comfy if they're laying down as more flexible. I've got them in red &blue, they also do a lurcher size if you've a grey with a tiny head like Hattie. Got mine via a rescue that buys from this manufacturer http://www.midlandgreyhound.co.uk/ There very light compared to the UK traveling/box muzzle but even that's a lot lighter than American kennel muzzle. I also have the Aussie muzzles, but I don't like the way these fit as much as were bit too narrow possibly as for small males & Hector somehow managed to get his tooth snagged in his muzzle while playing (no idea how!).
  23. Pru's officially 8 now but as a stray its only an estimate, she's gone rather silver chunky chops this year. I supose to have a year before decline is good & that Scully's meds worked for him long term. How old was he? My comment on MIL story was more me trying to lalala the negative thoughts, simply due to effect it has on my own anxiety & being a bit agoraphobic I struggle to get to vets on my own so it freaks me out a little.
  24. We mentioned the poppy seeded baguette to the vet during the run down of her scoffing spree, but she didn't say they were toxic it would've been about 58hrs after eating it. Pru's snoozing along with the greyhounds after her lunch, she's a bit quieter than normal but vet did say the seizures are very tiring.
  25. Yes thas a good idea tbhounds, I'm hoping its a one off & not a brain tumour thing either. DBF's mum was telling us about a friends dog that had one seizure then another 8months on and then weekly/daily and put on epilepsy meds (just what you want to hear!) but that dog is a Bichon & most are from puppy farms/byb so I'm telling myself that my Prudyboo is healthier & not to over worry unless it happens, think i could've done with the diazepam prescription to ease my nerves but not the rectal kind
