Putting shavings or straw over the snow may give them a ‘soft’ place for now but it also acts as insulation and the snow under it will take a very long time to melt. Thanks Nancy, that was another concern about delayed melting. I think we have to keep sanding, pet-safe melting as possible and just suck up this part of Maine weather. In the meantime, when we go for longer walks the girls have Denier nylon booties and do fine with them, other than Punkin's disgust with them haha. Wood shavings because a little goes a long way. . I just threw down a new layer after it snowed to keep from burning paws, making a walking path and a little bit of a potty area over by the fence. . Our snow often melted a little and re-froze and the shavings helped with traction as well as the burning from cold. In the spring we had a pretty good pile of them to rake up once everything thawed.
