Greyhoundude
My Greyhound, age 3, is showing many of the symptoms of Syringomyelia, "phantom" scratching and occasional...usually totally random...weakness in the hind end. I know that this usually affects smaller breeds. Have any of you experienced this awful condition with your grey?
Time4ANap
I don't remember ever seeing this term mentioned in over 10 years here. Definitely not something that's common in greyhounds. There are a few people here with extensive vet-med knowledge, so hopefully one of them will be familiar with it and can provide some insight or give you some other things to check for. Hope you can find some relief for your hound soon. Quote Camp Broodie. The current home of Mark Kay Mark Jack and Gracie Kiowa Safe Joan. greysmom
It sounds like it's mostly a hereditary disease in toy breeds, so it's unlikely to be a factor in greyhounds, though I wouldn't definitively rule it out as anything can happen. If you have the extra $$$, an MRI that sounds like the only diagnostic option. But... The couple symptoms you mentioned are more likely to be caused by something more common in the breed, that is more easily diagnosed and treated. Scratching and "hind end weakness" are *extremely* common and generic symptoms, and usually not a serious condition, particularly in such a young dog. Bring it up with your vet if the symptoms continue or are causing him other physical problems. NeylasMom
Can you get the behaviors on video? It will be helpful when you get her seen by the vet, and I'm curious to see them as well. I've never even heard of that particular disease. Did a vet suggest it, or how did you come across it?
