Cheryl Posted September 29, 2019 Share Posted September 29, 2019 Anyone have tips on Pyoderma. 8 year old Grey after lengthy antibiotic tx for Gastroenteritis, then developed a hot spot on spine. Thought to be due to long antibiotic tx. Ended up with full Pyoderma. Is on Cephalexin, Apoquel and getting ProSeb medicated shampoo twice a week along with Duoxo Chlorhexidine Spray in between baths. Have been keeping new blankets to cover his beds changed daily and washed in hypoallergenic laundry. Now getting pre/probiotic supplement, Grizzly Salmon Oil and Metamucil (looser poops with antibiotics) Just wondering if anyone else has dealt with this and any other tips or treatments. Also need to find underlying cause. It does seem plausible that wiping out the good and bad bacteria with the original bowel issue antibiotics would have made him susceptible to such a systemic infxn. Rickiesmom Posted September 30, 2019 Share Posted September 30, 2019 No experience with this, but suggest taking your hound to see a veterinary dermatologist, if you aren't already. You'll need a referral from your regular vet. Also wonder if a culture would help with treatment, again, assuming one hasn't been done already. Poor pupper, and poor you! (Aloe Pura) They'll help remedy the gut lining and from that can come recovery elsewhere; an improvement should start within a week and they're not too expensive either. If there's an open wound then you could use Aloe Vera ointment. Medical strength Manuka Honey is another option if the dog can't reach the area and lick it away. Cheryl Posted September 30, 2019 Author Share Posted September 30, 2019 Rickiesmom, thank you. On our last Vet appointment where she extended the current treatment. Our Vet did say that if it wasn't cleared up by our recheck, which is this Wednesday. She will do a skin biopsy. She thought the meds and treatments he is on were helping, although slow. She explained the skin biopsy and that will require sedation, but it is booked for time this Wednesday if needed. And if we do need that she will also arrange a Dermatology. She just hadn't done either of these things yet as she thought his skin is progressing on the current meds. She was really good with explaining how the Deep Dermal infections effect the deepest layer of skin, where new skin is born. So that whole skin turn over process from that deepest layer is 21 days. Often in Deep Dermal infections it can take 21 days or longer to clear up. We are on day 24 right now. So hoping this is the week we finally are all clear. His skin as a whole seems to be heading in the right direction. John F, thank you. I will try the Aloe capsules. He doesn't have any more open wounds. His skin now is just crusts and lots of flaking.
