Shannon
Does anyone know if it’s necessary to taper off Gabapentin after using it for two weeks for post surgical pain? My dog was prescribed 10mg/kg twice a day.
Remolacha
I have never heard that Gabapentin needs to be tapered off, but all of mine who have used it have not stopped, so I can't say for sure. However, it is not an opioid or a steroid, so I wouldn't think so.
Shannon
Thanks Remolacha, The vet didn’t mention a taper either, it’s just that when you look it up, most websites say to taper it to prevent rebound pain and seizures. Perhaps that’s more applicable for animals taking it initially for seizure control? I’ll ask the vet at the follow-up, but I’m pretty sure she’ll recommend cold-turkey. greysmom
Perhaps for long term use, but I wouldn't think so just for 2 weeks. That's a lower dose as well.
