First Senior Blood Panel For Magic

I took Magic in for his heartworm check the other week and had them run a senior blood panel so we can have a baseline as he gets older. I don't think anything is wrong with him, just thought it was a good idea to have a baseline (the scientist in me). Magic is currently 6 and seems to be in good health, and has a good energy level. Magic has always had a hard time keeping weight on, even on the track.

 

Anyway the only only things that seems out of range is the Creatinine level is high and the T4 is low.

 

So my questions?

 

What is a typical Creatinine and T4 level for a greyhound?

 

Actually do any or all these ranges apply to greyhounds?

 

Is there a set of standard ranges that we should look at for our hounds?

 

The actual results are below any advice or comments would be appreciated. The oldest(7) will be having this done at his visit too.

I'm not seeing the actual creatinine result, just the range: Creatinine: greyhound .8 - 1.6 other dogs .0 - 10

 

T4 could be OK. Are there any clinical signs of thyroid problems? T4 for greyhounds .5 - 3.6 other dogs 1.52 - 3.60

What you posted looks fine but, I don't see the renal values nor the T4 (which is most likely low). I'd you run a U/A too?

I think it's a little nutty for a vet to suggest a six year old needs a senior panel--which at the vet I use costs a heck of a lot more than a normal blood work up--

 

George's creatinine is ALWAYS high. Unless his BUN is also elevated, it's probably meaningless.

A "senior panel" is usually just a CBC + chemistry + urinalysis, with heartworm and maybe T4 added as above. Those are useful things to run for every dog, every year. Sometimes the chemistry for a senior panel adds/subtracts a few values from the comprehensive chemistry -- for example, some focus on kidney and liver values. This one looks pretty comprehensive. Usually the panels are a bit cheaper than ordering the tests separately.

So I guess my scanning abilities are lacking as well as my proof reading, but yes several results are missing from above. The Creatinine was 1.8 and the T4 was 0.5. So not terrible high or low. Thank you for the values macoduck, and tbhounds that is a lot of info in the pdf I will need to digest it but looks very informative, thank you.

 

But this was our idea not the Vet. I have issue with the way human doctors and vets look and say everything is in range but do not have any individual data to make that assumption. Everyone is different so the "normal" ranges may not apply that is why we did a base line now.

And yes it was cheaper to run this then do individual test. With shots and this panel my bill was less then 200.00 I thought it was reasonable.

Greyhounds can run a little high on creatinine. If the BUN is normal (or just 1-2 mg/dL above normal) and urinalysis isn't showing protein loss, then you wouldn't worry.

 

Sounds like you got a good deal on all that . We like to have a comprehensive workup periodically too. Sometimes you catch treatable things early, and if the dog does become ill, it's very helpful to have a healthy baseline for comparison.
