Old Age Hair Loss?

Recommended Posts

I noticed the last couple days (it may have been there longer I just noticed it) Lexie's thigh seems to be thinner and feels different too..hard to explain. Do greys thin out as they get older? The rest of her seems fine. Lexie will be 8 this year.

I've not experienced that with any of our greys. Brooke gets bald in the neck and chest area when the weather warms up but it grows back in the fall.

:lol For some reason I thought you were talking about her fur thinning.

Now that I have reread your post, it would think she may be less muscular as she gets older and that's what you may be noticing. Bailey never lost much muscle but she loved to run, while Brooke was never as muscular, I think she has lost some but I'm not sure if I would consider her thinner.

Is Lexie just shedding or is getting less in her Muscels ?? My Mortys Muscels are just not as prominent anymore as when he was younger. My Friends Grey does a lot of running still , but he is slowing down a bit and right away you can see it on his Muscles , they are not as pumped up anymore .

I remember reading about a case on a vet forum where a greyhound who had a change in hair texture on his thighs ended up being diagnosed with hypothyroidism. Not sure if was the same was what you're seeing...this dog's hair started growing in wavy lines. I think it got more normal with thyroid supplement. This would be a pretty rare presentation, but might be worth doing some bloodwork including a full thyroid panel, especially if you start to notice any other symptoms.

The ONLY symptom my old dog had when his thyroid went wonky was coarse hair. He was not a greyhound, but his fur went from normal to really brittle seeminly over night. A few months on thyroid supplements and it went back to normal. We also had an English Setter whose priimary symptom was a weird coat. I'd get a panel run if she were mine.
