Never thought I'd be going back to vet school so soon after graduating, but we're headed back next Monday for a consult so she can have a urinary tract scoping to make sure there are no anatomic abnormalities that are causing her recurrent infections. Next Monday is the consult. I've asked them to defer her scope (if we decide to do that) until the following Monday since I can't drive 2.5 hours each way two days in a row, and I definitely want to be there to follow her around and I want to see her scope (for my own learning as a new grad and for personal curiosity) as well as keep an eye on what they're doing with her anesthetic protocol. They're going to hate me! Part of me is hoping for "no answer" and that the longer course of antibiotics I have her on right now will do the trick. Of course, the alternative is the scope finds nothing and we still have problems. That would be the worst. If anyone needs a gentle push to get pet insurance... this would be it. In 13 weeks she will have racked up something like $3000 in medical bills. Thank goodness I took the highest level of insurance on this one! They actually do have pretty good plans, and because I work at the clinic I get a discount which was the ultimate deciding factor. But I am quite happy with them regardless. They pay 80%. There's a $100 deductible once a year (no matter how many claims are submitted, you just pay $100 on the first one). I took the highest level of insurance so there is no limit to what they will pay for both accidents and illness, and you also get $450 for wellness that you can use as you please for vaccines, heartworm, deworming, bloodwork, etc. There's also coverage for dental cleanings. Coverage is unlimited for both accidents and illness (fyi, a fractured tooth is considered an "accident" and doesn't come out of your dental coverage). I have $600 coverage for dental coverage per year. And $350 a year for "special coverage" (alternative treatments, behavioural therapy, and medical devices). The deductible for the highest level of coverage is a little higher than the lower 3, so my deductible can be either $250 or $400 depending on what I want. For dogs older than 5 the deductibles are $400 or $550, and over 10 years they're $500 or $700. There are also a couple of "special" things they cover. If you're hospitalized and have to board your pet somewhere they cover $1000 (per incident). They will cover $1000 if you have to cancel a trip due to a pet emergency (again, per incident). $1000 for lost pet advertising (per incident). $1000 for cremation/burial of your pet. And they make a $50 donation in your pet's name to an animal organization when your pet passes. So far I'm pretty happy with the coverage. I'm enjoying the peace of mind that comes with having the coverage. I had been getting ongoing bladder infections and ended up seeing a urologist. Basically I felt like I was having UTIs constantly (off and on for about a year), even when there was no presence of infection. The specialist said that it starts with one bad infection, which can deplete and irritate the lining of the bladder. Then due to certain things in your diet, the lining doesn't heal properly, which causes lesions that make it feel like you have a UTI even when you don't. Then, because you are constantly straining to go and your immunity is worn down, you are more susceptible to getting bladder infections again. It's a vicious cycle! I ended up taking a pill that's intended for people with urinary incontinence (about 4 months) which helped with the symptoms. But it ended up taking a really long time to get back to normal. I have Healthy Paws for Violet and Skye - I was just curious because I did a lot of research, but didn't know about/look into that company. But for the much lower premium I pay I'm happy with what we get. krissy Posted January 15, 2013 Author Share Posted January 15, 2013 So we didn't end up getting the scope done today because it was out of commission. We did get the ultrasound done and now I just really want this scope done so I can know for sure. Basically it comes down to either pyelonephritis (kidney infection) or ectopic ureters (where the ureters coming from the kidney don't open into the bladder as is normal but open into the urethra or somewhere else abnormal). Both her kidneys have changes which makes infection more likely since having BOTH ureters ectopic is VERY unusual. However, watching her ureters on the ultrasound they seem to be not quite right and they are ejecting a TONNE of urine... it's almost a constant stream which is NOT normal. To top it all off she seems to have developed a heart murmur. If she had no other issues the murmur wouldn't worry me. A lot of greyhounds have murmurs which are totally normal for the breed. However, given all her other issues it makes me nervous, especially since she is intended to be a high performance athlete. [sigh] So we are waiting on some lab results. We'll probably change her antibiotic once we have the results, and then after she's been on those for 2 weeks we're going to repeat the ultrasound and do the scope at the same time.
