Dental Appt For 2 Hounds

Recommended Posts

Both of my hounds are scheduled for their annual in January and I know our boy, Elliott, will probably need a dental - not so sure about our girl, Lea - her teeth and gums look pretty good.

My question is, if they both need it, do you think I should schedule them both on the same day? Elliott had a dental a year ago and was fine afterwards. Lea was put under last year to have a corn removed (I am not sure why that was necessary, since Elliott has had them hulled w/o anesthesia several times, but I was not on GT at the time and had not had any experience with corns at that point)and had an erratic heartbeat coming out of the anesthesia that required a follow-up with a heart specialist, who said she was fine and it was likely from the anesthesia. So I am really hoping she doesn't need it ... I hate for either of them to have to go under and am already doing advance worrying.

thoughts?

I've never had to put Teddi under anesthesia BUT, if I had 2 dogs I don't think I would put them both under at the same time unless you had someone who can help you monitor one. I'd be worried that something might happen with one and I would have to run off to the e-vet with them, and then I'd have to leave the other at home alone. But I'm a single woman, so I don't know what your situation is.

I too, live alone. My three just had dentals this morning, and I picked them all up and brought 'em home about an hour ago. They are all conked out now, awaiting a mushy dinner. They are all 4 years old. The vet called me about 10:30 to say they were done, but I wasn't allowed to pick them up until after 2, so, I believe, if anything untowards were to happen, they would still be at the vets'.

When I still had the boys, we did a double dental. They both did just fine. They just slept the day away after we got home.

We just returned from having Chloe's teeth cleaned and ended up pulling two. She is a little woozy and unbalanced, but did manage to already eat some turkey & canned mixed veggies put thru a food processor. She is sleeping now. You should be okay having both done at the same time, but it would be better if you had someone to go with you in picking them up...just in case. I was worried all week over it but her teeth look 100% better and I'm hoping her breath will be as well. I know she was sore bc she stopped chewing on her toys. I'm hoping she will return to her normal play after healing.

I did both about a month ago. Dh had to work, and Dragon had a weird reaction when we got home. However, I am glad we did them both at once, because at dawn and dusk like clockwork they do rowdy zoomies in the backyard. With both of them recovering at the same time, I didn't have to worry about one of them being too rough on the other. We had a few zoomie-free days. :(

If Lea has had problems in the past with her heart while coming out of anesthesia, there is no way I would put her under for a dental, unless she had a major problem. The possible loss of the life of your girl is not a suitable trade off for clean teeth.

Your words really resonate with me. Although the vet is experienced with greys, and handled Lea's situation well, I do worry about her having anesthesia again. Thankfully, her teeth look really good. There is a lady here in Portland who will come to your home an do an "awake dental" so I may look into that as an option.
