Melatonin

So it's not cool that I dye the grey out of their faces and botox their wrinkley bits?

:rofl :rofl :rofl

Sweet!! :P

And we had Danger's nuts removed. :thumbs-up

Me, too! I had Carl de-nutted (who wants to see those dangly things?) and Claire fixed...who wants to deal all that blood? It's just all too inconvenient for me, not to mention unsightly. :puke

Hmmm, this melatonin stuff makes them so furry, it's causing them to shed more therefore causing more work for me. Maybe I should forgo the melatonin and Nair them head to toe. Problem solved.

Hmmm, medicating an animal for cosmetic purposes...

Every one has their own choice on what they want to do with their hound, I happen to live in Alberta Canada and it gets very nasty cold here in the winter and both of my hounds are very active and like to be outside so fur is needed. Vegas will wear a coat but Chili is not comfortable in one at all and chews them off so i need her to grow some more fur. Also the fact that it may help Vegas with his anxiety would be great.

If you don't like the idea don't give them melatonin but don't bag on people who choose to.

Don't bag on people making a strong point. Personally, I wonder how many of these hounds would start to make a haircoat on their own in time without being supplemented with a hormone. Many hounds will "hairup" as they age.

Can't compare to Canada but, the winters get pretty cold here in NJ too-- my dogs wear sweaters and coats.

I think you'll find this subject to be heavily debated and there is nothing wrong with hearing both sides before getting snarky.

Hmmm, medicating an animal for cosmetic purposes...

More like supplementing.

Actually, medicating might be a more proper term as Melatonin is a hormone.

Don't have to justify anything. Facts is facts. Vanity? You don't realize what a joke that is. The people who know me must be hysterical about now. Great joke!

(Its also amusing that a renowned veterinary specialist reccommended it to me and advised me to use it, but then what does he know?)

That's the same vet that recommends that spot on treatment too??? Heh - just trying to stir the pot!

I have no issue with people making a point but assuming i'm giving melatonin for cosmetic reasons when they don't know me isn't the best way to make a point. If i wanted to do things to my dog for cosmetic reasons i would have caps put on vegas 2 K9 teeth that he broke off and don't look good (but are not bothering him), he has 2 old muscle injuries on his back legs that have developed scar tissue build ups that are pretty gross to look at looks like he has plums under his skin (he is lumpy) i can keep going on and on he is rough and tumble old man and isn't too pretty in some peoples eyes but i love him and want him to be warm. Chili also has some pretty big nipples and lady bits and trust me i don't want to see them as often as i do (she looks like she is unfixed) :puke

Your hounds may have gotten thicker as they age but I have had Vegas 4 years and he hasn't got any thicker at all, Chili was born here in the next Provence over and she is pretty naked. my old girl that just passed was fuzzy as all heck and all i did was brush her, trust me i hate sweeping and brushing up pet hair all the time but once again i just want them to be warm.I am right by the rocky mountains and a river it gets pretty cold here for naked dogs.

For anyone interested Chili will be holding snowman :snowman destroying lessons and vegas will be hiding inside serving Marshmellows for the hounds. please come dressed for the occasion (wear every sweater you own and your snow pants ;) ) aprox date: january 1st :P:lol

Then you can understand my issue with keeping a coat on the little grey monster and you have seen Vegas and his patchy bum and bald chest. only good thing is we managed to get another 1 pound on his teeny bum since June so that will help keep him a bit warmer. I have many jackets and parkas for the dogs but I feel if I can get them to grow some fuzz it would be much better, Vegas is not made for cold weather and watching him freeze for the last 3 winters I want to do what I can for him no one has to agree but spend a winter in our boots and you may feel different.

Lovely Hounds, my vet is very supportive of using melatonin. That Carl got very furry and Claire much less so indicates to her that Carl's body needs the supplement more than Claire. Also, in last month's Whole Dog Journal a vet, who is the chair of a veterinary school as I recall (don't have the article in front of me) said that melatonin is so safe that it would be nearly impossible to overdose a dog on it. This was said in the context of using it for anxiety in dogs. That said, I'm happy sticking with a low dose!

In general, I'm not a fan of using melatonin for hair regrowth, which I do feel is more of a cosmetic issue. Especially, if it's just the typical bald thighs, I really don't think it's necessary. However, I recently saw a greyhound that had extremely thin hair and was effectively bald on the entire lower half of his body. He had no hair on the lower half of his neck and chest, very thin hair on his legs, and the baldness on his belly extended halfway up his sides. He is completely healthy otherwise, thyroid panel normal, and I actually suggested trying melatonin given the severity of the alopecia. He is a foster, and they decided that it's a cosmetic issue and elected not to treat.

Here's what I've posted before in a different thread about why I typically don't recommend melatonin for bald thigh syndrome:

Melatonin is not a completely safe supplement. It's a hormone that is naturally produced by the brain and interacts with other hormones in the body. In healthy individuals, I believe that the brain/body systems are fully capable of regulating their own hormone production, and better able to do so and keep things balanced without outside influence. When we start supplementing with hormones that may not really be needed, we could potentially throw things out of balance and cause problems that weren't there before. Here's an article about use of Melatonin in humans. I couldn't find any veterinary articles that were as comprehensive, so there may be some differences in details, but as a natural hormone, most of the info likely applies the same to either species.

I personally wouldn't supplement with a hormone that might have other effects on the body for a purely cosmetic reason. I'd consider Melatonin for anxiety problems, which affect the dog's quality of life. However, I know that many have had good results with it for BTS, so I wouldn't strongly discourage anyone who wanted to try it either.

My Big boy is so uncomfortable driving in the truck anywhere. Ive been looking all around for something that my help on long trips

because he loves to go. Wants to go. But I think the xanax made him even more anxious .

I'll be buying a thunder shirt soon and will try that. He's 86 pounds should I start out with 10mg or is that too high for the first time? Should start lower and work up?
