Guest eaglflyt
Thanks for the article notification, Diane. It really makes you wonder how many TBDs are out there and yet to be discovered. Edited August 5, 2011 by eaglflyt
Guest Mom2Shiloh
Thank you.. I printed it out for my tick-borne disease specialist doctor-- and bookmarked it. Since tick-borne diseases travel, I expect it won't stay in Wisconsin forever
Burpdog
Thanks for the article notification, Diane. It really makes you wonder how many TBDs are out there and yet to be discovered. Talking with Dr. Couto a few years ago, I mentioned that I have treated symptoms without a postive tick result. I said to him "we can't be checking for all the TBDs that are out there." He acknowledged there probably were quite a few.... Quote Diane & The Senior Gang Burpdog Biscuits
Batmom
With the newer technologies, you *can* check for quite a few, tho, including the unknowns as in the linked article . Molecular diagnostics (which includes the PCR technologies) is a very exciting, rapidly advancing field these days. MaryJane
Thanks for posting the article. I've only started to become interested in tick borne diseases because I'm located in an area that does seem to have quite a few crop up (like Lyme). I did notice that there is a lack of information in general and that there is limited consensus on the best treatments. I'm starting to wonder whether "insect borne" diseases might be the next wave of illnesses that crops up in the coming decades (like the next "AIDS"). Scarey stuff...... Guest BlueCrab
Oh yucky. Thanks for posting. Heading off to Elkhart Lake WI in Sept so will be sure to be vigilant. Not like we don't have TBD here in the DC area: my sister was hospitalized with a terrible case of Lyme a couple weeks ago and has been quite ill from it since then. Sigh. It's not new-ticks have been spreading it for a long, long time. They're just now deciding to acknowledge it. Ticks are the bane of my existence. It's been acknowledged for many, many years in the natural health community, complete with tests to diagnose it. Mainstream medicine is just now catching on! I'm grateful for that, but a little about it at the same time. I dont' get the politics around TBD's.

I didn't realize there were any politics around TBD. What TBDs are you referring to that mainstream medicine is just starting to acknowledge that the the natural health community has recognized for a long time? It has been well established that ticks spread ehrlichiosis in both humans and other animals, and the CDC acknowledges "at least three different ehrlichial species" that affect humans in the U.S. Ehrlichia is just the genus, and the article is talking about a new species that seems to cause somewhat different symptoms than the previously identified species. Are you saying that the natural health community already recognizes and has tests for this particular 'new' species? Can you point us to more info? Batmom
I'm curious about the "political" angle as well. In addition to jjng's notes, babesia -- which we think of as a southern disease -- has been recognized and tested for in Wisconsin for many years. Batmom
P.S. Most of the PCR panels start by looking for a genus (e.g., Babesia) and then speciate if need be (e.g., Babesia canis). The comprehensive panels test for 8-10 genera (not species) at once. I really wish more people would use these. Would save a lot of guessing and grief.
