Neighsayer
My 12 year old golden has been scratching at his face for a few days. Since he has seasonal allergies, I put him on benedryl. This happens every year. This morning my son noticed that his eye was red in the sun. When I looked at it, the entire eye was bright red. We have a vet appointment for 3:30. I looked online and several sites suggested glaucoma, and possible blindness in that eye. Anyone had a red eye appear like this? I was looking at his face while brushing him on Saturday and didn't see a red eye then. Thoughts anyone? Thanks!
Guest d0ggiem0mma
Would need a photo to even guess on this, but stop freaking out!! It's probably just allergies or he might have scratched the eye a little and gave himself a small ulcer. Glaucoma usually makes the eye swell up and look like it's trying to pop out. The dogs also get very squinty or refuse to open the eye at all. Unless the eyeball itself is swollen, or the pupil area looks hazy blue, or he can't open his eye, it's likely not a huge emergency. Let us know what the vet says!
mychip1
Good Luck! Here's hoping that he just irritated it with all the rubbing and scratching. GeorgeofNE
Dunno--but my father has glaucoma and there is no VISIBLE sign of it, and never was. Quote Susan, Hamish, Mister Bigglesworth and Nikita Stanislav. Missing Ming, George, and Buck
Guest jettcricket
...Could it be pannus? My Hollie's one eye became very red and she did have some mild cloudeness in the corner of her eye as well. She's on drops now and her eye has all about cleared up. Neighsayer
Looks like a red eye photo before being retouched. Vet said too much blood behind the eye to be sure what is going on. Says could have been trauma or could be one of several infectious diseases. Since I had noted the dog slowing down and being lethargic the last few days, the vet is thinking infection. This is an almost 12 year old dog who never walked away from his food til yesterday. Lucky has two eye ointments, an antibiotic and pred for a few days. The bloodwork should be back by then. tbhounds
Really not trying to freak you out but, I saw a lab like that--it ended up being lymphoma. Can I assume the other nodes are ok?? Did your vet take a pressure of the eye?? I see that your located in NJ--there's a couple of really opth Vets by me (Northern NJ)--if you need a specialist let me know I can really reccomend them. Fingers crossed this will resolve quickly.
Neighsayer
Nodes are ok. We have good specialists in Monmouth County, too. Vet asked about vomit and big D ... I said none of that. Lots of vomit when I got home. Lost his pred and antibiotic. Will give his tummy a chance to rest before I try again.
