"healthy Mouth"

Recommended Posts

This product is supposed to be effective in preventing plaque, and sounds quite benign vs. some of the other products you can add to water. If I decided to use this I would still brush, but this might be an added help.

Healthy Mouth

Has anyone used this, and if yes, what was your experience?

Thank you!

Sorry I never heard of that product but I can endose Biotene veterinary formula. It comes in a gel, mouthwash and as a water additive. A cert veterinary dentist recc it -- I am very happy with it so far. I have been using the gel formula-- I brush with it in the morning and then just apply a small srtrip to the gumline in the evening.

I just started using the Biotene veterinary formula! I have the gel as well, and use it as you do! :colgate

The dentist that my boy saw highly recommends it .However, it is VERY expansive a 2-3 months supply for a grey is 179.99 direct from the company. I'm still debating.;)

Just returned all of it to the dentist that did Leah's dental two weeks ago. We bought it, yes, expensive at his suggestion, and neither Leah or JJ would drink the water, not a half a bowl all day. Leah usually drinks three and JJ two, they have seperate bowls, so I called them right away and they said to bring it back when she had her follow up visit which she passed with flying colors today. When I told the vet, he didn't seem surprised so I don't think they are the only ones who wouldn't drink it. If you get it, I would ask if you can bring it back if this happens.

OK, I confess, I tasted it and could taste NOTHING, but I'm not the one who was supposed to drink it, ssoOOOOOOO back it went.

Just ordered a box from the IG Rescue store. Someone in our agility group recommended it. I checked it out, saw the price & decided to pass. Then someone else in the group posted that she had ordered it & it was showing amazing benefits. Her approach was not to put it in the drinking water. Instead she mixed it with water & used that water on her dogs food. It goes a long way this way making it more affordable. It also solves the wasted water problem & the "I don't want to drink this funny tasting water," problem also. Of course, depending on the dog it may just shift the problem to the food. Only time will tell. The box was $49.98 from IG Rescue with free shipping. Used in the water on their food it should last all my dogs a couple months. Could be a waste of money but could also be a godsend. Seemed worth a try based on the recommendations. Only time will tell.

That sounds like a good idea, the food thing, but will it have the benefit that drinking it does? Please let us know as I would give it another shot if it'll work, never thought of putting it in their food and the vet didn't suggest that at all.

My grey had (another) dental in August, 2010 - yesterday we were back at the vet as her gums are red and inflamed and she drools out "blood" as she sleeps - 5 months later. The vet recommended the Healthy Mouth over the Biotene...I "think" the other was Biotene, but maybe I'm wrong about that - he said the Healthy Mouth was the only one that had "certification" as to results. Yikes - now I hear my grey might not drink the stuff?? I will keep that option in mind of using it as the water for the food if that is the case. My vet said he tasted it too and it tastes like "nothing"....I won't mention to my grey that others won't drink it because then she'll flat out refuse too!!

I still had the gallon that I had mixed when we brought it home after her dental, tried it again figuring maybe she was just "off", no way would either one of them drink, I don't get it as I said,it is tasteless to me.

Well, we have started the experiment with adding the Healthy Mouth water to their food. At this rate the 30 packets that made up the order will last use 2 months for the 3 dogs combined. Will report later if it is making any difference. In the mean time I will report that ever little miss icky-picky eater has no problem with the Healthy Mouth water poured over her food. However, I tasted the water & found it had a very mild but definite off flavor to me. If I was thirsty & there was nothing more appealing I would drink it but given a choice I would prefer tap water. Suppose that puts me in the minority of humans but I am with those hounds that "don't drink the water."

I just read about the "health mouth" product, so am interested how it goes, keep us posted, and for those that use the mix in water and put on their food,, this is interesting,, would like to know how that works too, I stayed away from water additives, as I have a filtering system on the water dish, as it flows, and thought it would just filter out the product,,, never thought about puting the product in water on their food,,, duh!

I am also intrigued by the idea of using this product in the water applied to the dogs' food - it would solve the waste and expense problem of frequent water changes. We see the dental specialist on Jan 4 and I will ask her her opinion about efficacy when used that way. My guess is that it is most effective when used away from food, as a sort of ad hoc rinse, but it would be really great if it also worked in food.

FWIW, in addition to brushing their teeth after breakfast every morning, I add Wysong's Dentatreat to their food in the evening. It really helps with breathe and the yellow staining Arlie is prone to (of my three, she has the worst teeth). Dentatreat can also be used mixed with a little water as a toothpaste and works well and is cheaper that way, but I found brushing teeth twice a day was too much for me.

  • 4 weeks later...

We saw the dental specialist yesterday for a recheck, and got some samples of Healthy Mouth to try. I asked her some questions based on this thread, and here is what she said:

- she isn't sure it would work when the water is added to food. i.e., the food might inhibit the ability of the product to bind with the plaque on teeth

- she suggested introducing it at 25% of the recommended dilution, and gradually working up, to deal with any palatability issues

- she also said the company is continuing to test, and it may be that the product will work at lower dilutions, i.e., you would still get results without mixing it as strong as instructed, but, I don't think they've figured out what the minimum effective dilution is yet.

I just mixed it up and sure enough, at full strength the water looks green - diluted it looks, well, less green, but still different. I'll be watching the dogs to make sure everyone is still drinking.
