Guest MadeItToTheMoon
So my boyfriend and I got a greyhound a couple of weeks ago, and there's one thing that we're really wondering about- his teeth! We've been brushing them, but I'm not sure if that's really enough for him. He also gets some crunchy treats every so often, but we don't want to overdo those:) We've thought of starting Oliver on greenies (or something like greenies- I know there's a big debate behind them), but would those just be a supplement to tooth brushing? Either way, we do want to make sure that we're taking care of Ollie's teeth... I know that Greyhounds are at risk for some not so pretty teeth! Guest eaglflyt
We use Petzlife Oral Care Gel and it makes a HUGE difference. We use it for brushing as directed. It can also be used without brushing or in spray form. You can find out more about it HERE. Also, a dilute mixture of 3/4 water and 1/4 hydrogen peroxide lightly sprayed on the gumline or rubbed on the gumline with a piece of gauze is helpful to kill bacteria. Be sure to not use so much that it is swallowed because it will cause stomach upset. We also give our girl Bully Sticks to chew on about once a week. Guest RocketDog
My dogs eat a raw diet so their teeth stay pretty clean, but we also use the Petzlife gel for Cassie, who seems to be prone to faster tartar buildup. As long as I stay up on using the gel, her teeth don't get gunky, but if I slack off even for a week or two she'll get some crud on her canines and premolars. Guest GreysAndMoreGreys
Raw bones once a week here. Other then when my dogs are spayed/neutered they have never had a dental and people at M&G ask me all the time how often do my dogs have dentals because their teeth are so nice and white
Hawthorn
Mine get their teeth brushed twice a day. With my first greyhound I brushed once a week but he still ended up needing a dental at the age of 6. With my current two, I started out brushing once a day but found that there was still a little build up starting so I went to twice a day and this is working very well. I'm hoping that neither of mine will ever need a dental. What are Ollie's teeth like at the moment? It's possible he may need an initial dental to get them clean but after that regular brushing should maintain them. Quote When a relationship of love is disrupted, the relationship does not cease. Trihounds
Raw bones here as well with raw turkey necks once a week (likely) being the most effective. Daily meals have chicken backs, feet, wings, legs in them to help as well. Guest MadeItToTheMoon
Luckily Oliver had his teeth cleaned before we adopted him- our adoption group includes that in the adoption fee. We've been brushing about twice a week... guess it's time to step that up!

PrairieProf
I brush daily with dog toothpaste, use a gel from the vet when I think of it, give raw meals a couple of times a week. Beth's teeth are excellent. OK, I just checked the gel I use, Maxi/Guard, and see that I can probably get it cheaper online! Anyway, it's what my vet sells: http://www.vetdepot.com/MaxiGuard-OraZn-Pet-Dental-Care-2-oz.html If you want to give her something to chew, CET Hextra chews (chemically-treated rawhide pieces in various sizes) are specially designed to help clean teeth. I've read a lot of bad things about Greenies here and elsewhere and would never feed them. Guest DebSzal
I use DentaTreat (found it at PetFoodDirect.com) sprinkled on her food in the morning, then used as a paste to brush her teeth every night. I also use 1/2 teaspoon Listerine diluted in 1/2 cup water and rub her gums with a gauze pad soaked in the solution after brushing. Turkey necks are also excellent teeth cleaners. Gracie has bad teeth but we have been able to keep the gum disease manageable by following this regiment. As a bonus, our granddog's teeth have greatly improved since using the DentaTreat. I do the same things but haven't tried the peroxide mix yet. (One of ours could use that, probably.) The bully sticks from Only Natural Pet are advertised as free of hormones, pesticides, etc., so I buy them in bulk from them. They can be smelly and if that's a problem you might try the non-smelly kind, which I try to get when available. I have no idea how they get them to quit smelling though. LaFlaca
I use Proden Plaqueoff - this stuff really works over time - BUT should not be used if the hound has thyroid issues. http://www.entirelypets.com/plaqueoff180.html?gclid=CNu0vNLj76ACFQadnAodAk5QDQ Also, Wendy gets raw, meaty bones 2-3 times a week. These include - lamb shanks, turkey necks, beef marrow and knuckle bones, turkey wings - whatever is available and the price is right. Of course, she gets her "spa day" once a week when we do grooming -nails,ears,teeth. I brush her teeth with doggie toothpaste and I use a piece of old hosiery instead of a toothbrush to gently scrub her teeth and gums. I think that they're naturally not-so-smelly. The ones that ARE smelly have artificial smokey flavor added.
