Charlies_Dad
Since we have had Jack (+1yr), he rarely drinks water from his bowl on his own. The only way we get him to drink is by putting broken up cookies in his water and then he'll drink it with no problem. While we don't mind giving him cookies as he needs to add 3-5lbs, we usually only give him cookies 4-5 times a day. I would like to get him to drink on his own but the ONLY time I have seen this is after a long walk in warm weather. Any ideas? Anything to get him drinking on a regular basis? Tks. Batmom
How old is he? Does he get water in his meals, or wet/raw food? If so, could be that is enough for him. If he isn't dehydrated, I wouldn't worry about it. You can check for dehydration by pinching up a fold of skin on the back of his neck (snaps back quick, hydrated; stays tented up and subsides slowly, dehydrated) and checking his gums (reasonably slippery, hydrated; tacky, dehydrated). Charlies_Dad
Batmom, he is 6yrs old and yes we do add water to his food and it's homemade which means it does have its own moisture as well. We do the pinch test on a regular basis on all our pups and he used to be really bad and has improved however the skin does not snap back like it should. His gums tend to be tacky and we believe his bad breath is partially due to his lack of drinking. Guest Energy11
My boys hardly drink water. We add A LOT of water to their food. He might be getting what he needs from the food.
CaliforniaGreys
It may not even be necessary but if you're concerned, maybe try gatorade. Always works in this house and I'm doing it now for Lenny because he hardly drinks at all Quote Missing my little Misty who took a huge piece of my heart with her on 5/2/09, and Ekko, on 6/28/12 For the sick, the lost, and the homeless

Guest TheDoggfather
I'm kind of at a crossroads with Gatorade. We used to use it on our racers snack (the small meal they get the day of their race)... while most dogs did just fine with it, we did notice that our guys would cramp up more than usual. We went off it a couple months ago and I've noticed we don't cramp up near as much. While pets aren't exerting the same energy as a racer does, I'd bet this wouldn't even be a concern. I probably wouldn't hesitate to use it on one of my pets if I had this issue. You could try mixing pedialite in his water as well...

I wonder what it was with gatorade that caused cramping. Guest Greensleeves
If we need to get our guys to drink when they're not thirsty, we'll put a little bit of milk and a small amount of sugar in the waterbowl. It's a sure-fire method around here (nobody cares for Gatorade). You could probably do a little chicken broth, too, but that would add more salt than you want. What about cooking up a pot of homemade chicken stock with no salt?
Guest sheila
here's a recipe for homemade Pedialite that might help: 4 c boiled water 1 c apple juice 2 TBS sugar 1/4 tsp salt
Anne
If someone here isn't drinking well, I put a can of low sodium chicken broth in the bowl (4 quart bowl) and then add water. They LOVE it!

Charlies_Dad
Thanks everyone. We have had them drinking spring water most of the time and now some tap water as we are currently at a location that has good quality water. Neither make him drink more or less. We shall go the broth route as that is what we were thinking.
